  • Hi everyone! Apologies for the late upload (recorded in December) but finally got around to uploading it. Hope this video helps for anyone who's thinking about joining the RAF. If you have any further questions you would like to ask then please leave them in the comments and I'll get back to you.

    That's truth. There is about a month between each thing. (our son is in his second week of basic training) He also said quite a few people failed the fitness test at Halton. So keep your fitness up. Hardest part for him so far---every minute of your day you're doing something. There is no downtime. We're talking to him on the phone and he's shining his shoes for the next day. Any "downtime" is being used for revising, tidying, ironing etc...

      Exactly, sounds exactly how it was like when I was an air cadet on summer camps, it never actually ended. What happens if they fail the medical at Halton? Do they get sent home or is there a second chance? Always wondered about it.

    Just stumbled across your videos mate and had a browse to see what you were saying;
    Having passed out of Halton many years ago, I admire your willingness to share all the information you do with others online regarding your journey. Your humility and eagerness certainly shows on these videos. I fully expect with an attitude like this to be one of the seniors on your intake at basic and for you to perform very well at RTS.
    I wish you the best in your future and hope you enjoy your time in the service as much as I have.
    Remember, no matter how much it sucks at Halton, remember what you’re doing it for!

      I really appreciate the comment :) and if these videos help at least one person then it was worth the time taken to make them. Hope you had a great Xmas and a happy new year.
      P.S My gf read this comment before I did and mentioned the seniority would be purely because I'm old not because I'm competent XDDD.

    couldn’t agree more, good luck with the rest of your application and your phase one if all goes well! Happy new year and make this one the year when you entered the military! Not a lot of people can say they got this far, let alone, fully pass into the raf! My only word on this would be when you are specific towards your fitness. (It’s very hard to get your head around), at the beginning of your training, training towards more cardiovascular fitness, especially running on the treadmill for your 2.4k. When i first started this I was doing treadmill once a week, cross country wide a week for a 5k to build the cardio. when it comes closer to that fitness test you then want to be able to say right, I can absolutely smash this, let me focus on my core to make sure I get these sit ups and press ups for afterwords. Lastly, on packing for your phase 1; give yourself 1 month ahead to start getting stuff together, I had 4-5 pages of equipment that I needed to collect, I did it all in 1 day and focused on getting my forms and other things together prior to my start date.

    I'm in the process at the minute and can say I agree with everything. My process has taken about 1 year from applying to have a joining date, there will be many delays, especially in the medical (thanks Capita). I stupidly stopped my full-time job in June as I thought I'd fly through the medical stage, it ended up taking about 5 months to be cleared fully. Getting fitness up early is so important, on the day of the fitness test you'll push yourself more than you have before, but I only passed because I put in the work beforehand. And lastly, from what I've read, getting used to body-weight exercises and outdoor running/hill sprints is a great way to prepare for the fitness you'll encounter during basic training (though take that with a pinch of salt as I'm not there myself yet)

    • @JakeGchannel
      @JakeGchannel  6 місяців тому

      Exactly, great points and I know Capita does drag it out. Yeah I was close to dropping my job but since I got to August/September I started getting the gist its going to take a while and it has. Good luck to your basic training, have you got a start date yet?

    My son has his PJFT in Sept 23 and he joined RTS 4 weeks later in Oct. They had a 3 week break over Christmas and they all returned on Friday. He’s due to grad in 2 weeks. Me and my husband met when in the RAF. Good luck to you all in your RAF journey, best thing I ever did !

    I totally agree that it doesn't go perfectly. I've been top notch with all the stages but I've just had the medical and they've found I'm temporarily medically unfit due to my anxiety, hopefully my application will still go through though. This has been interesting. Joining the RAF was always my dream as kid, kinda typical obsessed with aeroplanes, was in the air cadets, went to all the camps. I didn't bother because after my A levels it became apparent I wasn't officer material 😂 like you said, ego. Now I don't think I'd have made it as an Airman

    • @JakeGchannel
      @JakeGchannel  6 місяців тому

      Yeah I went through something similar in my early twenties where I was just arrogant, didn't appreciate things and also acted like a victim in some cases but since doing a 180 on that I then realised the benefit I can bring to the RAF and vice versa. Everyone I think goes through that sort of phase in their own personal way but the biggest questions is whether they come out of it better than before.

    Hi Jake, thanks for the video, this really helps man!
    I have sent in my initial application for the RAF, and waiting for a recruiter to get back to me. I am nearly 18, and hope to join next year. I have a couple of questions: what type of things do they ask in the interview? What is the acceptance rate for a pilot?
    Thanks man

    • @JakeGchannel
      @JakeGchannel  6 місяців тому +1

      There are many different questions they could ask you in the interview not one interview is the same as the other meaning my interview questions would be different to yours. Common questions for the personal section would be: 'Why do you want to join the RAF', 'What is your current fitness level', 'Would you be willing to take a life?' etc. The RAF Knowledge section would be something like: 'Name 3 RAF bases that are at home and abroad', 'What is the RAF's main goals?', 'What is the RAF's history' etc. Obviously they don't expect you to know everything on those sections just a decent amount to show you have done your research. I made a video explaining my own experience during my interview which you might find helpful.
      In regards to pilot I wouldn't know what the acceptance rate is but being realistic it's the most applied for job which in turn makes it the hardest to get into. When I was in cadets I did speak to two RAF personnel on a base and they mentioned to at least have A's in all subjects in school as a minimum just purely due to the demand as they only pick top candidates. Then you need to perform well in the DAA, Interview and fitness test also. Again, they will only pick top candidates due to demand.
      I would say give it a shot, if you don't make the line then at least you given it a shot. Who knows, they might offer another role more suited to you as they did to me. Hope this helps.
