    What in the blue hell are the chances that the first time I actually have pizza delivered in years, Domino's no less, THIS is the first video on my feed when I settle down to eat? Absolutely incredible

    I didn’t know this was a retail game. I used to see it at stands that sold shareware games for $2.

    I've got lots of nostalgia for this game. Regarding the phones, the ones you can answer safely have a slightly different pitch so it isn't just memorization

    On a slower machine the timer does become accurate. I had a copy on an old machine back in the 90’s, though it was a mono display so I didn’t have any color and the only sound I had was the basic pc speaker. Never managed to complete this game despite playing it at the correct slower speed.

    Pretty impressive for a budget game, especially the analog joystick affecting the walking speed. The graphics are very CGA-looking, with a bit of extra color added for EGA. I liked the old Noid Claymation-style commercials, and there is a crazy, brutal Family Guy bit where Mayor West battles the Noid... "perhaps it was the Noid who should have avoided me."

    This is...surprisingly-competent. It feels like if it got a bit more refinement it could be a classic arcade game or something. There's some really solid ideas in the formula; the movement and the forgiveness of how you can jump and roll seems a lot of fun.

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  5 місяців тому +2

      I noticed too during the gameplay that different phones ring with differently pitched tones. At first, it was pretty consistent that low pitch was bad and high pitch was good, but there's a bad high-pitched phone higher up. If they made that more consistent they would've been able to get away with randomizing which phones were good and bad! :o

    • @CharemTheShadox
      @CharemTheShadox 5 місяців тому

      @@Pixelmusement Yeah, your conclusion that the game isn't totally great at the end is sensible given this still has missteps like indeed, how you have to memorize the good and bad phones...that's not very fun. But yeah, it's very close to a hit formula! Maybe if we're lucky, somebody might adapt this game and maybe remaster it at some point. (I already know there's fans who have in recent years made new Noid-related games; Yo! Noid II: Enter the Void was weird and surprisingly very good.)

    Sometimes I wonder: If aliens ever arrive on Earth, what will they judge us by? Making a cultural phenomenon out of destroying food is certain to be among those things.

    This looks like a cute little game! A neat piece of advertising and gameplay, I feel. ^_^
    [edit]
    Oh, and it was quite interesting to learn the origin of the "Noid"! It was not at all what I expected! ^_^
    I'm reminded, then, of a poster in an old science class that I had at school, which exhorted the reader to be more alert--because "the world needs more Lerts"! ^_^
    [/edit]
    As to the next game... if it weren't for the mention of claymation I might think that it was Designasaurus II--an old childhood favourite of mine. But with claymation being mentioned, presumably not so!

    I would have never have thought I'd describe a game themed after one of the most memed mascots as "impressive for its time", but there is a LOT going on here and it's kinda nuts. Loads of enemies on-screen doing their own things, PC speaker samples, steady framerate, interesting mechanics... who actually made this!?

  • @theangrycolossal

    I remember... I think it was Computer Gaming World's 100th issue celebration? It came with a special edition DVD-ROM that had various games and such available on it. Most of them were demos and shareware, but a few of them were defunct DOS titles that had been licensed for re-release.
    Avoid the Noid was one of these titles. I lived in out in rural Canada so I had never had Domino's, and I was very young when this ad campaign originally ran so I had no prior knowledge of the Noid's existence. I simply found it to be a weird, off-beat licensed game in the vein of Cool Spot or the like.
    I don't really feel like I have an opinion on this game or the Noid as a mascot/ad campaign since it's kind of a thing outside of my time. My context for the Noid is mostly the legacy and memes other people have created out of it

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  5 місяців тому +2

      I mean, speedrunning is a very different way of playing a game and many games which are mediocre or terrible to play casually actually become much more fun as a speedrun! Though the opposite can be true too, some games which are super-fun to play casually become a nightmare or chore to try and speedrun. :P

    Funny you mention speedrunners because that is how I even knew this thing existed--watching Mike Uyama play it at a Games Done Quick event.
    He didn't have music though, not sure if he just didn't enable it or didn't know he could. Gotta admit I was kinda surprised hearing it even HAD music as games that are four-color CGA usually don't.

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  5 місяців тому +1

      Uhh... I would say the majority of games I've covered which support both CGA and EGA have AdLib support and thus almost certainly have music. There are notable exceptions of course, like the Sierra AGI stuff, but that's because that was all made before the AdLib card existed. :P

      I don't have a MobyGames account and even if I did, there's certain requirements in terms of how they want box/disk shots done which I'm not able to do. Basically, I can make it look good on live VIDEO, but taking a properly aligned front-facing still image at extra-high quality with the correct colour balance, that's beyond what my current equipment is capable of. :P

    I always end up being confused by your "Physical Acquisition Details". I feel it is not very intuitive to mark for example the entry "Extremely Rare" with an x or another symbol as it doesn't give instant association with what you were trying to tell us. What does x mean? Rare or not? This section could need some (imo overdue) modification. Your current approach on symbology in this section is confusing.

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  5 місяців тому +2

      It makes more sense when all three symbols are there: Green Checkmark for a pro, Red X for a con, and Yellow Diamond for a neutral point that's important to keep in mind and isn't good or bad. :B

    • @PzAufklLehrBtl3
      @PzAufklLehrBtl3 5 місяців тому

      @@Pixelmusement That doesn't make sense. Why is the statement "Extremely Rare" being marked with an X?

    • @Pixelmusement
      @Pixelmusement  5 місяців тому +2

      Because extreme rarity is only a positive if you already HAVE the game and want it to appreciate in value. For actually acquiring a copy, extreme rarity means it's going to be difficult to get one. :P

    • @PzAufklLehrBtl3
      @PzAufklLehrBtl3 5 місяців тому

      @@Pixelmusement That does make even less sense. In its current form it only generates confusion - especially when you need to stretch so far for an explanation.
