Never separate so from the firearm. Ammo signifies there's a firearm somewhere and declared or not they want to match it to confirm the firearm was declared properly. Bad advice unless you like answering LEO questions. Follow these clear steps and you'll be fine.
Thank you for the full! explanation. You are the first person to clearly state the declared and locked firearm can be put back into your suitcase. Up till now I was uncertain whether the locked case was its own baggage or if I could include it with my checked bag.
This morning I flew Alaska Airlines using this EXACT same case and the check in woman immediately flagged it. She claimed she could grab a gun from inside and we were delayed 30 minutes. Had to get my wife's lockable suitcase back from TSA to store this case inside. Not TSA approved.
The "Unloaded" affidavit does NOT go on the inside of the firearm case if it's going to be stored within your checked luggage. The TSA is wrong on on this point. I've had numerous TSA officers tell me "Never open the firearm case in an airport!" Put the Unloaded affidavit on the outside of the box, secured with tape, and then close up your checked luggage. Opening the firearm case in an airport is a safety issue. I wish the TSA would get it's act together on what is the proper procedure. Videos like this are one if the reasons we don't trust the TSA.
