That spring keeps tension on the spool so it don’t just spool out like a broken spring lol it’s a spool guild and to keep tension on spool Bottom mine u won’t need worry it’s on a lawn mower it’ll pull it out with shoe string .
Yes even with steel cable u always leave a few wraps not fully out
