You need to quit worrying about what people say about your work. You do more to help people fix their own issues simply by watching you. And you do more in your spare time than most people do on their full time jobs. Thanks,

Wherever they built the pickup, must have had parts stacked and a insect used it to store food or for a nest. Then it got assembled. Lucky you, you got the special one.
Tell Noah, it's why you don't wear jewelry when working on machinery, yep that's what it was. LOL

Cool stuff which brings back memories. Friend had a 56 Ford with junk yard 390 and over drive 3 speed trans. Was cool to hear him split shift it, 6 speeds.. loud mufflers..people would take double take.

Nothing like the sound of those cars. 6cyl and a 3spd with overdrive. Beautiful. Love your work the cars are superb and you go things in a logical and economical way. Forget the millionaires who pay someone else to fix their cars! Btw we had a diesel Vauxhall insignia with a weird running issue, same thing. Leaves in the fuel tank....how in the heck??! Cleaned and it went away. Bizarre.

Looks to me as if someone intentionally sabotaged that fuel pickup before you purchased it. But, being the MASTER Mechanic that you are - you hunted down the problem and eliminated it. Good job, Jonathan. I still want to buy this Studebaker - I haven't given up on my dream of owning it.

Atta Boy. That solenoid on the firewall resembles the Potter & Brumfield ones they used in DuMont televisions in the late 40s early 50s.
Bravo. Good work. Like yourself, I love restoring back to working order things that have no business existing in this day and age. It is up to us as keepers of Americas technological past to do good work.

Great job finding that in the tube,Johnathan, sometimes you'll run in circles trying to find the problem. I've been there, with a 68 impala, never had a fuel problem until one day acted just like the studebaker, after dropping the tank, four fuel pumps ,two carb kits, new float, needle and seat, new sending unit all new lines and still ran out of gas on the road, i gave up for over a year. I needed to move car one day,and thought I should pour some gas in the tank,i happened to look at the under side of the cap, sure enough, the damn vent was stopped up. After cleaning it out it was fixed. So you never know what you're going to find working on these old cars. Thanks for the great content.

looks like my kind of car. i get attracted to rust bucket junkyard refugees. they have turned into my best daily drivers going to work and back before i retired 6 yrs ago. my workmates would rag me a lot but they were amazed at the miles i got out of those drivers and the money i saved ( always paid for upfront ). keep 'em full of oil, gas and anti-freeze and they'll keep riding along with the PM done. maybe my old beater rust buckets wasn't fancy but you could spill coffee in them, chain smoke and pass gas in'em and not sweat it. i even made a few 1500 mile round trips in 2 of them from nc to michigan and back w/o incident stopping and checking oil level, adding as needed.
that old studebaker is a restoration project for someone with the money and know how. having it operational would make it easier to sell for that purpose. i enjoy watching your vids and bringing these good ol' boys back to life.

I love your videos. I love old American cars. The late 40's and mid 50's are my favorites. Amazing little rust on your cars. Where I live we are lucky if only half the frame has rusted away, and that the body has a shape of the original.

Mister Jonathan I have enjoyed you videos since the first Rat Rod build that you showed and I think it's pretty cool and how you can show the people out there that have minimal skill that they can start building cars and get better. Or if they want they can take a car such as the Studebaker and just get back into safely drivable condition. I like the look at leaving up with the years of life that it has already spent. Some people make all the rat rod or Resto rod hoarders even the ones out there that call the necro rod I think I'll just call it a rusty life rod.
Keep up the good work I enjoy your videos.

Great videos and a great car! I wish I had the internet back in the 1980's when I had a 1949 Stude 1ton pickup. It had that same flat6 w/overdrive you got there and it wound up parted out sadly. I wanted to warn you about the distributors on those motors, mine was stuck and I had to really work it to get it out. When it did come out the shaft had bent...they got a gear on the end that meshes with the timing gear and they are a bitch to pull out straight. Keep the videos comin!

  • @4beats56

Use to run a wire from the solenoid to a toggle switch on the dash for the over drive. Flick in on in any gear. Just make sure it's off when backing up.
When its engaged your free wheeling.
OD was great when racing someone. If you get the jump on the other car engage it and you will have taller gear ratio.

  • @derekobidowski3301

im sure EmersonCollie would restore this car. he has a 1951 Studebaker Commander Land Cruiser same bullet nose but a 232 V8 with overhead valves as it sounds good when he put on true dual exhaust with glasspack mufflers as his original muffler blew from a backfire when it dieseled when he shut it off. He found an original acessory radio for it was a Philco Studebaker am tube radio with built in speaker as that center grille in the dash is for the speaker for the radio. if original it will need the correct 3 slot wheels studebaker used for the dog dish hubcaps. if that muffler you put on blows from a backfire try a smithy's muffler.

Vapor lock, step dad,s favorite bug a boo. He would on a long trip. Carry a bucket of ice. As he was bar hopping, or shopping with the wife. And with respect his had a lamp,(green) that recommend a (shift) to over drive. It had a locking handle. And used on "long trips", As we would travel on Ohio's 224, old 25, 6, and later I-75. Leather seats and a squril cage fan in the trunk pulled the air through the passenger area kept us cool . Told every body that car was his Buddy. Tks for showing a fine auto.

That wiring diagram will help a lot with any future electrical bugs. But you trouble shot the overdrive problem before it even showed up. Not an easy task with wiring that’s as old and frail as what is in that Studebaker. A blocked fuel line in the new part you installed isn’t something you see too often. All cleared now so all is well. That Studebaker is moving along quickly. Keep up the great work.

That's an odd choice for packing material. Usually the shipping material is bubble wrap or foam peanuts, not wood chips. The important thing is that you got it cleared up. I appreciate the fact that you took the time to fix, rather than replace, the relay for the overdrive - others would've been stumped, and probably would have quit. This car's going to be quite sorted out by the time you turn it over to your wife.

Johnathon it does me good to listen and see you work on these vintage cars not a bit of computer ware or ecu to be seen I remember those days as a young apprentice in the sixties working on the English version of these vehicles and trucks The only American car I ever remember working on was a ford v8 pilot I remember thinking how smooth the engine ran but the fuel consumption was unheard of in this country Ah good times gone bye keep up work 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧regards John

Good stuff. Don't need to move O/D cable in or out as you're moving. Push it in and leave it. Governor dictates when it comes in and kicks out. If you listen closely enuf you can hear relay click then take foot off gas pedal and solenoid will kick in usually 22 to 28 mph. Hope I'm not insulting you with stuff you may already know. Just excited for you and your Starlite Coupe. Solenoid quit today on my Stude truck, so on it next thing. Keep doing what you doing, I like it. Kim

Just a note on the overdrive: I had a'50 champion that the overdrive fried on. Found out that the overdrive unit had run out of oil . The unit does not share oil with the transmission. So ,unless you have already checked it be sure both are full. This was in 1965 so I was able to get one from a junk yard.I doubt many of them are still around today.
