  • Lady Bird Johnson Home Movies, Home Movie #27: 1950's and the Dallas Fair. Footage of the Johnsons and Rayburns at the Dallas State Fair. This is a silent, black and white film with retrospective narration by Mrs. Johnson. Following is a scene by scene description, courtesy of the Audio Visual Archives at the LBJ Library.
    The film opens at a reception for Sam Rayburn and Lyndon B. Johnson at the Dallas State Fair in the early 1950's. (October 7 23). LBJ and others ride a cart at the Texas State Fair. LBJ, Mrs. Johnson, Sam Rayburn's sister Mrs. Bartley(?), and Sam Rayburn are all present. We see a Lone Star flag waving over the fairgrounds. LBJ, Congressman Homer Thornberry, Eloise Thornberry, and Bob Clark sit in a cart. Cotton candy is passed out among them. LBJ eats cotton candy in the cart. The cart tours the fairgrounds. LBJ "uses" a movie camera. The group sits in the cart. LBJ visits and shakes hands with two little girls.
    LBJ and others visit the automobile exhibit and fairgrounds. LBJ, Homer Thornberry, Sam Rayburn, and Bob Clark look at new cars. LBJ sits behind the wheel of a new car. We see views of the outside of the automobile exhibit hall and of the touring cart of people. LBJ, Lady Bird, and others eat popcorn in the cart. We see scenes of the fair buildings and various views of the "Big Tex" statue.
    The next scenes are of the Sam Rayburn and LBJ reception. There is a "Rayburn Johnson Reception" sign. A car arrives and Sam Rayburn and his wife get out and walk up the steps to the reception hall. LBJ gets out of the car and poses on the steps with Lady Bird, accompanied by George Reedy. LBJ and Lady Bird greet people. LBJ and Lady Bird talk to an unidentified man with Sam Rayburn behind and then to the side of LBJ. Sam Rayburn shakes hands with individuals. LBJ, Lady Bird, and Sam Rayburn talk together. LBJ and others stand in a receiving line. We see a close-up of LBJ.

    Judging from the automobiles on display at this particular State Fair of Texas, this was filmed around 1955-56.

    LBJ did great things for Texas! LBJ did great things for America! The Civil Rights Act. The Voting Rights Act. Medicare. Medicaid.
