I've used several of your videos to make repairs on my 96 Cherokee. Your instructions are awesome and you don't skip over any details. I was watching one video and the guy just skipped over the part where he removed the fan shroud and fan. I can fix things but if a step is missing, I might sit there for a half hour trying to figure it out. Thanks for taking the time to post these videos.
I just got a emerald green, manual 98’ jeep Cherokee sport! Can’t wait to start working on my new whip, I’m also a woman so this new journey is very empowering!
Awesome video! I just replaced mine yesterday. I will say this: I had some issues with the thermostat housing. These crack a lot and you need to be super careful when you put it back on. I had to buy a new one. Also, please use some RTV silicon gasket maker on the inside of the thermostat if your thermostat did not come with a rubber gasket on it. My local auto store did not sell my thermostat with a rubber gasket already on, so we had to use the RTV silicon stuff.
This was a much better video because some videos would have you remove the power steering pump and I can see that is not necessary watching your video thank you very much
Nice job, very helpful. I've watched several videos on changing a Cherokee water pump. I am a novice weekend mechanic and I really appreciated your careful explanations especially because you included some stuff that the others missed. So thanks.
Im a fan of flushing the heater core anytime im flushing coolant. Part stores rent out a handy fitting to go on the end of your garden hose for it that really cleans it out.
Thanks, excellent video! I am about to start replacing pump and thermostat on my 98 Cherokee. I have seen quite a few videos where they remove the PS pump completely. Could not figure out why, good to see you leave it in place.
I am stuck in that same boat. Oil seepage from valve cover and just not gotten around to it yet. It does look like as I do the water pump might be a good time to tackle it. That and I've been dreading the thought of replacing my heater core. I haven't had heat in my xj for seven years... so it would be a nice change.

Nice video and a great ride, i would appreciate it if you would advise about the NAPA tru- flow pump, is it good or not for 30% offroad use, also how did you get the flushing water out of the system and how much coolant did you actually use?
The metal coolant pipe is out of place and blocking my valve cover so I wanted to scrub through this to get a better view of where it’s supposed to be. I got the VC off but I still guess that’ll have to be fixed to avoid future issues
I will be replacing the radiator, radiator hoses, thermostat housing, water pump, would you suggest I do it in an specific order? BTW thanks for the content.
Great video! So my question is, mine appeared to be leaking from lower rad hose, I went ahead and replaced both lower and upper and thermostat and gasket, but now appears to be leaking from water pump? Does the water pump start to leak when it’s going out? 97 Cherokee Thanks
If the bearing is going out in the alternator it will start leaking. There is a weep hole that is designed to leak when it goes bad. Otherwise it may be leaking from the water pump gasket.
I'm halfway through doing mine now & there were some steps that would help first timers, that you didn't show or explain: best way to flush the block without removing block plugs; how to keep that water pump pulley from turning when you get to the last bolt (TIP: I use a vise grip to hold it in such a way that the vise grip jams against the thermostat housing); how best to get proper tension on the belt. THAT is something that I struggle with & hoped to see here. BTW: no gasket maker on the gaskets? Why not? I see that you don't answer questions but I hope that my observations will get others thinking & posting.
I answer what I can, but I get a bunch of comments a day I got to keep up with. You shouldn't need gasket maker for using a paper gasket. The paper gasket works fine on it's own as long as the surfaces are clean. I torqued down the water pump pulleys after I had the belt on to hold it. And for tightening the belt, I'm used to know where to tighten but usually it's when you get 1" of deflection.
That steel tube that comes off of the water pump to the heater core is just called the water pump inlet tube.
