When I was 10 (in 1968), my friends and I sang:
"Mc Donald's is your kind of place,
    The roaches run the place,
    They serve you rattlesnakes,
They throw them in your face,
and they also make you a disgrace,
    and steal your parking place,
Mc Donald's is your kind of place YOUR kind of place!"
Love that Dixieland-style music! Reminds me of "Shakey's" restaurant. Does anyone remember "Shakey's"? :)

Fresh French Fries..back then they bought Potatoes and peeled them by hand and cooked them, they were out of this world. Us kids made friends with one of the workers and we often got food for take out and he would often give us extra fries or burgers with our order.

This is the kind of ad that the Don Drapers of the world dismissed when it came out. Notice that they barely talked about the food, and when they did it was barely mentioned. Instead they sold the idea of the PLACE. Reality was the food was the same as any other fast food place and really not even as good as say Burger Chef.
But McDonald's sold it as the PLACE to go. You didn't go for burgers, you would go to McDonald's. Like the VW "Lemon" ad, it broke all kinds of classic advertising rules.

    • @NJGuy1973

That's what's so fascinating about Mad Men. It's about a bunch of high-paid execs trying to sell products, when to ordinary guys like me, that seems dumb. "You don't sell the product! You sell the feeling! That's Marketing 101!"
I can't conceive of a world where advertising isn't about manipulating emotions first.

Not to mention the ads for cleanliness at McDonald's.. Billions upon billions of burgers later it's tough to argue the point of selling the sizzel and never the steak..
My father was an ad exec back in those days.. In my hometown of Dayton Ohio there was a piano and appliance store called BHA, (better home appliances). My dad HATED the stores owner, Emmett Royer, but never failed to acknowledge his advertising genius. His store at the time outsold every store of its kind in the entire US in small town Dayton Ohio through his over the top annoying ads..

When we were backpacking around Europe in the 1970s we used the price of a Big Mac to tell us what we would pay for food in different countries. When we backpacked around South America in the 1990s we used McDonalds for clean toilets. Seriously..... and the food was reliable. Thanks McDonalds.

This response is kinda late, but I know what you mean. I went to Rio De Janerio, Brazil in 2001. I was afraid to eat the Brazilian food, because I was afraid of food poisoning. A friend ate some of the local food, and came down with diarrhea. I was eating rice, and soup. I discovered a McDonald's in Rio, and the Brazilian woman with me ordered our food. The food was good and the restrooms were clean. I used to work at McDonald's and knew about their policy of quality control. My friends laughed at me and said I could get McDonald's in the US, but I ate all of my meals there. I brought Kaopectate, and Imodium AD, and gave it to my friends who ate the Brazilian food. ( no offense to Brazil but our dietary ways were different from the local people).

@furfinsandfeathers we sang it as: McDonald's is your kind of place, hamburgets in your face, french fries up your nose, pickles between your toes, ketchup down your back, I want my money back, before I have a heart attack...And don't forget the milk shakes, they come from polluted lakes, McDonalds is your your kind of place.

Here are the original words to that jingle:
McDonald's is our kind of place [clap clap]*
It’s such a happy place [clap clap]
Hap hap hap happy place [clap clap]
    A clean and snappy place
McDonald's is our kind of place [clap clap]
    It’s such a happy place
McDonald's is our kind of place!
    Your kind of place!
*These words indicate that two claps are done immediately following those lyrics.

when I was a kid in the 70s we ate mcdonalds often, not everyday but often enough. we didn't get fat from it, we moved around & worked it off. no one complained about the happy meals or about the "unhealthy" food. a h appy meal was a cheeseburger, greasy fries and a milkshake, today they put sliced apples in it...not fun.

McDonalds, let this video be my parting memory. Last night I went into McDonalds and got a small vanilla shake $3.12, sweet and watery. Years ago you could not suck the ice cream up the straw shake was so thick. You never know when it’s going to be the last time you see somebody, be kind. Good Bye McDonalds. I’ll remember you kindly and mourn your tragic death. And keep selling those cups of soda that look like pails, I saw a lady and a kid in front of me struggling to carry 5 of them. Mom had 4 in a brown cup holder. The kid had 1.

Back in the early 90's when I was a kid. I remember during Halloween, they would give us these plastic round containers each with the kids meal in them. And we'd use them to trick-r-treat or put them on our heads and run around the house with'em. Sad they don't give them away now, my niece and nephews would enjoy playing with them.

For decades McDonald's cooked its french fries in a mixture of about seven percent cottonseed oil and 93 percent beef tallow. The mixture gave the fries their unique flavor -- and more saturated beef fat per ounce than a McDonald's hamburger.

This takes me back. Back when our Stepfather would strike us with his belt to the double-beat of the pistol shots in this beloved advert. It's Burned into my memory and backside.

As kids we sang:"McDonalds is yur kinda place. Hamburgers in yur face. French fries between yur toes. Dill pickles up yur nose. And dont forget McDonalds shakes, made from polluted lakes. McDonalds is yur kinda place."

@CosbyTheCaterpillar Good point. The lids barely stay on for walking, never mind tipping all the way over.
If it tips over, you're wearing it.

This commercial was really big when I was a kid. Our (grade school) version of this song:
McDonald's ain't my kind of place!
    They feed you rattlesnakes!
    Hamburgers up your nose...
    French fries between your toes!
    Last time I was there,
    they stole my underwear!
McDonald's ain't my kind of place!

HOLY CRAP, spill-proof lids? No way!!
And what's with the gunshot sounds every few seconds? It's like, "McDonalds is a happy place *bang*bang* or else!"

@deltaenforcer93 You also realize that a small size drink and a single payy burger and a small fries was considered an regular size before they started the whole super size thing.

The plastic lid you have and still receive at McDonalds(and almost any place for that matter) is the spill proof lid.
