Locomotion Ecology in the Fossil Bird Ichthyornis

Comparing fossil specimens with living relatives can shed light on the evolution of ecological traits, such as powered flight abilities in birds. Talia Lowi-Merri's research introduces the first 3D shape analyses of a key element: the sternum (breastbone). In living birds, the sternum anchors critical flight muscles. This research provides a fundamental framework for reconstructing avian flight origins.
