  • Playthrough of Vandal Hearts 100% Deathless part 4 for the PS1. This part will cover the entire act 4 and with the entire party reunited alongside Darius, you will get a full party again here. This chapter requires a careful choice if you havent made any of your Archers into a Airman as one is necessary later in the game for the purposes of Ash's secret class advancement. In here you will also begin to face whats arguably the main villain elite forces of the game with the Crimson Army which is leagues above the imperial army you faced up to this point. Last chapter you got to see only a glimpse of the Crinsom Army with the Crimson Archers and Lando who was one of the 5 Elite Generals who supposedly were never bested in combat ever (too bad as they are not match for my strategies ;). The beginning of this chapter also has arguably the hardest fight in the game to do deathless as the game tries to make it in such a way that you are supposed to be completely outmatched but thankfully i know how to play with the AI and clever usage of the Armor class where most players swear to God its a terrible class (where in fact they are one of the best and extremely overpowered) is shown here in full force. This chapter is also where your characters will be hitting the level 20 mark which grants the final advancement level to your characters and its advised you reach it as soon as possible as the game will throw some tough competition on your way. Thankfully last fight on the previous you can find the Mana Key which is by far place to level up outside of chapter 2-4 and i use it so that i hit level 20 with all characters so that i dont have to do it while progressing the game.

Continuing on with all the battle strategies for each fight below:
4-1 - This fight is by far the hardest fight in the game. All the other 4 Crimson gererals surrounded the town you were in a attempt to wipe the party for good alongside the Crimson elite force with then so theres ALOT of new enemies in here: Crimson Knights are Duelists the final advancement of the knight class, Crimson Armors are Dragoons, Crimson Hawks are Sky Lords, Dallas is also a Dragoon and he is the strongest of all generals being capable of one shotting most of your characters besides your Guardsman in one hit, Kurtz is a Ninja the final advancement of the Monk class and his spell "Dagger Storm" is extremely powerful at this point in the game as its meant to be a level 22+ in power, Sabina is a weird one as she is a Sniper but only in stats and movement as her attack range is the same as a regular Archer making her the weakest of the 4 and finally Kane himself is a Duelist but him being even higher leveled then Dallas, his attack power and defense doesnt even compare to his Dragoon comrade. You are not supposed to actually win this fight with those odds as the battle conditon is for you to flee but of course i am not gonna do that as i always clear the whole map of enemies and this fight is not exception. Use your Guardsman to create choke and bait their Hawks to either hit the same or your Archers as they will take little damage from then. Abuse Phase Shift, heal often and play safe and you will easily get through this fight without any loss and make all the Generals look like scrubs. Grab all the treasure and then head for the exit to end the map.
4-2 - This fight has 2 new enemies: Wights and Bugaboos. Wight has the damage of a Swordsman but the movement range similar to a Ninja complete with no movement loss but a defense worse than a actual Monk. With their low level almost all your characters will one shot then but not your archers and their defense multiplier vs then is even higher than it should be. Bugaboos are the main threat here as while they are low level bowman, they have both the move range and the attack range of a Sniper (and also the no movement cost of a Monk). Almost any character including your own Archers will one shot the Bugaboos. While everything is low level, care must be taken. Use the terrain to your advantage to reduce their damage to nothing as their level is so low and slowly work your way throught their numbers. If you have any Airman, place then in the water for the amazing 20% defense bonus to negate their insane Archer weakness and abuse Phase Shift as their low level makes then take high magic damage. Dont forget the buries treasure in here.
Special Battle - I use the Mana Key to do some leveling before the next battle as the characters are almost hitting the level 20 mark.
4-3 - This fight can be tough or trivial depending if you leveled up everyone to level 20 or not. Of course i choose the trivial route ;). More new enemies in this map: Skeletons are Duelists but have worse defenses then the Crimson Knights and will simply kill thenselfs by running into your Dragoons, Gold Golems are the Dragoon variants of the Dark Golem but weaker than the Crimson Armors in the attack department but they have a hilarious attack animation. They will die to Phase Shift spam or your own Dragoons and finally the Egg Worms are Snipers and they are on a high ground at the start making then the main problem in this map. The way to do this fight is to pick one side and focus your damage into that side so you do not get surrounded and the Egg Worms cant all aim at the same target. Make sure your Airman is on a safe spot or he will easily die to then.
4-4 - Arguably my favorite map in the game. The twist of this map is that each part of the train will be released after a set amount of turns for each part with the first part being release after 2 turns so your goal is to work your way to the front car before any character gets left behind. Theres one new member of the Crimson army debuttng here and its the Crimson Shooter who is the Sniper variant of the Crimson Archer. They have very good defenses for a enemy Archer similar to the Grenadiers so you wont be able to easily take then out with your own Archers. Because of the way this map works, strategies that relies on Dragoons are out as you cant wait for the enemy to come so this fight they will only see action in the last car to take out Dallas. Dallas is nowhere as dangerous as fight 4-1 as everyone is at the last advancement level so his damage doesnt get a multiplier for attacking lower advanced units anymore. Make sure you buy some time buy baiting him into healing so that a character can get the Ramen which is the last of the 3 treasures needed for a key in the Kerachi tavern.
4-5 - Another fight that you are on a timer as you have 8 turns to destroy all 8 death devices to save Kira and get her back into your party again. This fight introduces 2 new enemies: The Acid Ghost who is a Skylord that can poison with its attacks and the Death Angel who is a Enchanter with one AOE spell with a range similar to Roman Fire but stronger called "Thunder Ball" and a long range ,single target but extremely powerful spell called "Harmful Wave". Enemy Mages with 2 offensive spells will randomly choose which spell it will use before acting out of its logic and will make its target selection based on which one it chose. You always want then to choose the multi target spell as its lower range makes theirs AI expose thenselfs more while they have a tendency to move to annoying spots if they act on their long range spells. This map has alot of Cracked tiles which makes your characters have a increased movement cost to move thrugh then if you are not a Airman or Monk. Unlike the previous battle, you can strategically use your Dragoons better here despite being on a timer but of course you have to take some risks. Your goal should be to get every single treasure and kill every single enemy for the best payout before destroying the death devices. Kira in this map is considered a enemy and if you accidentally kill her with a spell, its also a fail condition so watch out when using Phase Shift close to her as the turn passes and she gets lower, it easier for her to be in range of the spells (its completely impossible to hit her with your Archers with the layout of the trap she is in). The death devices despite being a classless level one enemy may not get destroyed in one hit if you use the weakest spells leaving then with just 1 hp so beware of that.
