As a Scot I would like to mention the Hunter Wellington. Timeless, recognisable, practical. They last for ever! Essential wet weather gear. Kind regards to you and all of your viewers.
Margaret M I love my Hunters but they do not last forever. I’ve owned and worn mine everyday for 2 years. They are now cracked with holes where they bend at the ankle. They are so comfortable though. That’s why I wore the daily. Also beautiful.
I agree, army green Wellingtons are a classic, since I was little, and probably before that too... I am now 55 😊 I am on my fifth pair of wellingtons since I was in my early 20ies, they do NOT last forever, they dry out and crack, and I mostly wear mine in rain and muddy roads
I'm afraid that is no longer true.... When they were made in the UK they were excellent. Now they are made in China the quality is awful. My fist pair lasted over 20 years, £5 from the factory shop in Dumfries, the last pair got taken back to the retailer after 4 moths having split. Save your money, don't buy Hunters.
Hunter wellies wear out very quickly on pavement. I live one city block away from a large beach where the wellies are very useful, but walking that one block wore down the heal very quickly.
I bought a pair of Dr. Martens a few years ago when I was working a minimum wage retail job that kept me on my feet for 8 hours without a break. At the time of purchase I was barely able to justify the cost, but I quickly realized it was the best money I ever spent-- and I stand by that. I've worn them as a college instructor, I've worn them to protests, I've worn them to conferences, I've worn them hiking. If I could only wear one pair of shoes for the rest of my life, it would be those boots.
I’m so sad that my pair of Cherry Docs was stolen when I was about 17. I’d had them for a few years at that point, and even though I’d worn them a lot, they barely showed any wear, and they were so comfortable! I remember being rather annoyed that I couldn’t wear them to school (uniforms). And now I’m in a wheelchair, I don’t think I could justify buying another pair. Not only are they very expensive now (and I’m poor), but I no longer need comfortable shoes, and I couldn’t put them on and tie them up myself anyway. Pity, because I love them so much.
Very true. My Docs have seen many muddy festivals, shows, mosh pits and long walks/travelling. Never let me down. They'll last you a lifetime if you take care of them, and they are comfortable enough that you can wear them for hours on end.
Dr. Martens quality has gone down significantly since they switched from manufacturing in England to overseas. Definitely not worth the money anymore (unless you buy the premium more expensive made in England ones).
My friend has the Chanel nude and black ballerines. They look lovely and get her a lot of compliments which is nice. I would not buy them personally though. They are extremely fragile. The leather is so delicate it gets dirty easily and within a month or two the pumps were showing wear and tear. If it rains my friend will wrap her Chanel ballerines in plastic and walk to the metro that way. Honestly owning a shoe that expensive and that fragile is anxiety inducing. I do agree that the shoe selection here is representative of iconic shoes. I would include the Gucci loafers too.
Tbh, if im dropping hundreds on paw-protection, im expecting it to last. There is nothing worthwhile about shoes that break. A staple of good quality is..... good quality.
One of the best things about being in a wheelchair is never having to worry about wear and tear on my shoes! 😂. Also, I can now wear heels again without having to worry about sore feet (or in my case badly hurting my back). Maybe that would make the more expensive shoes worth it in my case. They’ll certainly last a lot longer on me than they would most people.
As an Australian I find people wearing ugg boots outside quite strange, in Australia they really are treated more as a house slipper and you rarely see anyone in ugg boots if they're not also wearing pajamas/a dressing gown etc.
Yes!!!! Thank you! They’re (extremely comfortable) pyjamas for your feet, not fashion wear! I loved my Uggs when I lived up on a mountain- I have feet that get extremely cold extremely easily (seriously, as soon at it gets below 22*, my feet get cold), and winters especially were very cold (cold for this thin blooded Queenslander at least- it got to -6* at my house in the winter). But with proper Uggs, I didn’t even need to wear any wool socks with them, they were warm enough on their own. And that’s what they’re for really, keeping your feet warm. I have heard people think it funny that the warmest slippers come from Australia, I think because plenty of people don’t think it even gets cold here. But it does- we have snowfields, and even in Queensland, we get snow occasionally (though given our usually dry winters, not often), and it can get below freezing if you’re at a high altitude.
Though apparently Ugg brand do also make winter boots made to wear outside in very cold temperatures. My Canadian friends say they’re great. Though unlike the original Uggs, they have proper soles and a different shape to the slipper type.
personally, I think Dr. Martens are the most "worth-it" shoes on this list. they've completely versatile depending on your style, incredibly comfortable and long lasting.
Black KittyCat Happiness my daughters physio says if they were made compulsory as school shoes she’s see less than 50% of the problems she currently treats in children.
The only problem with them is that they are too much associated with neo-Nazism. But the product itself is absolutely good and worth the price. Unfortunately, I cannot buy them, because I do not want to send a message that I support neo-Nazis. I actually feel the opposite about them.
@@borzix1997 I live in the UK. I wear Docs, I see at least a few people wearing Docs on the street daily, and I've talked to people who wear/love Docs. Never has their historical link to nazis comes up, and never have I encountered anyone who linked them to Neo-nazis. But it might be a matter of where you live. Generally 'white supremacists/neo-nazis/etc' have been known to lace their Docs with white laces to symbolise their allegiance. I imagine if you stick to the standard black or yellow, you shouldn't have much of an issue.
@@borzix1997 I think that might depend on your location. In Europe, they're associated with punks and metal heads, mostly. You see them at most shows with alternative music. I'm a leftist, very anti-nazi, metal head, and I wear them all the time. Same with my friends. It's true they had that association way back (in the 80s I think?), but luckily that is no longer true. Now a days, they are associated with alternative clothing styles and great music.
@varick wettlaufer For about the price you pay for some brands like Louboutins, you can actually buy handmade custom shoes. These then fit at least one's own feet;)
I own one pair and on the store I purchased stickers to protect the soles that supposedly will never wear off. The color is still perfect but that could be because I can't walk on them for more than five minutes at a time. Seriously they hurt even when you're sitting down.
I think they might be slightly higher than the usual price but as someone who has become a lot more conscience of sustainable fashion practices, they'll be a pair of shoes that I would be willing to pay more for.
The problem with hight prices in products that are no meant to satisfy premium/ luxury needs is that if the demand is not as big companies can't afford escalate production (mass production that reduce the cost per unit).
I feel that Louboutins are rather basic in their design. That wouldn't necessarily be a problem, however, they seem to continuously release shoes with little creativity put in, just some new colours or studs. I feel that brands like Pucci, Chanel, and Manolo Blahnik offer more artistry. Louboutins are great for a simple, basic shoe that screams status, I wouldn't necessarily say they are as fashionably innovative as they seem to think they are though.
As I keep on watching your channel, I am more convinced that price tag doesn't mean durability and comfort. Better to pick a good quality and if I can, at an affordable price. That's what this channel is teaching me. Thank you 😊
I have a vintage pair of classic CHANEL nude and black two tone slingback shoes and I love them. I prefer the vintage CHANEL shoes as they are better quality than the modern ones.
I would buy Adidas from recycled material at 150.- Euro if they would donate part of the price to the "4Ocean" movement that removes glass and plastic from the ocean.
If I was going to own any of them I would go for the Chanel shoes. I think they're an absolutely stunning example of simple and elegant design. Though, to be honest, I think I would go for a dupe. Not sure my soul would handle paying £500+ for a pair of shoes...
@@Micro-Nova Totally! Especially since there are brands that produce good quality shoes in Europe for a fraction of the price (Högl, Peter Kaiser, Bobbies to name a few)
And Birkenstock have a huge comeback right now, everyone is wearing them in Berlin today.. I didn't like them at first until I tried them on (my mothers actually, fifteen years ago), and now my sense of aesthetic has really adapted to the comfort :D
Indigo Periwinkle but Uggs don’t have to be pretty- they’re slippers. As in, they should never be worn outside the house. In Australia, they are considered to be slippers. Very warm, very comfortable slippers (can attest as I get super cold feet and lived on a mountain where it got quite cold in the winter. I didn’t even need to wear socks with them, they were that warm. Whereas with my outside boots, I had to get a size up just so I could fit two pairs of thick wool socks on my feet).
I'm currently saving up for a pair of Manolo Blahnik BB pumps and a pair of slingback pumps. My reasoning is going to be a cliché but, I prefer Mr. Blahnik's philosophy and approach in which he thinks of his customers' comfort first. The same cannot be said to Mr. Louboutin, unfortunately.
You should know that Manolo Blahnik BB runs extremely narrow. I have a couple pairs of other ones of his and they are the most comfortable including the Hangisi. They mould to the feet. But the BB's even for my very narrow heel are too narrow in the toe even going up half a size.
I saw a documentary where Louboutin said that he wants to make shoes one cannot walk in 😅 as a person with sensitive feet that makes me cry🤣 That man has no reason to make shoes🤣
Have you listened to Shaun? Entirely different content (he mostly debunks alt right talking points), entirely different accent (from the north of England, I think), but the same warm bath feel to his voice. Highly recommend, even if only for something soothing to fall asleep to. 😂
I STILL have my original wooden ones! I ad to have the “holes” reenforced at a luggage repair shop. They are the navy ones. I have bought more thru the years but stopped when I noticed they were then beings made in China. The exception is a pair with holographic leather . I couldn’t resist!1 lol I’m 73 and occasionally still wear them.
As much as I agree that two-tone Chanel shoes are iconic, I still don't think that any shoes should cost this much. It's just shoes, they won't last very long.
It depends on your wealth status... for a poor person a 100$ shoe is too expensive, for a middle class person 100$ shoes are easily in the budget with 1000 dollar shoes being crazily expensive but as someone with parents who have very large disposable incomes my mom loves to splurge on designer clothing and accessories and even dresses my father and my brother and I in designer since birth. It’s all about your budget
Very informative as always Justine. On that note, could you make a video listing sustainable, ethical fashion brands? So many brands claiming to 'go green' these days, it's all a bit too confusing...
Hi Justine, I watched your talk on Fashiontech Berlin! Great talk! It made me think to ask you if you could do a video about your experience as a successful youtuber, what your expectations were, surprises, upsides and downsides. Would love if you could share your experience xx
Why don't fashion-forward, elegant, sexy shoe styles incorporate a practical insole design that promotes foot health? The comfort category has a look that screams frumpy, earthy, and commonly in the US worn by older women. Is it hard to incorporate, let's say, an arch sport or heel cushion? The store Clarks is the most fashionable brand I have found, but they are still for an older demographic.
Pop Corn, I find those gentleman's attitudes ridiculous. It reminds me of foot binding. As a child, I saw my grandmother's feet. They were very deformed & painful due to her wearing "stylish shoes" that were bad for her feet. To each one their own, but I want to be able to walk.
Maybe look up fluevogs? They have lots of cute shoes that are comfortable that don't hurt when you walk in them; at least from personal experience I can walk all day in the pair I bought on sale without my feet hurting. As well as many of the stores have dedicated cobblers so you can get your shoes repaired if moderate damage happens to the soles.
Naturalizer! I have terrible feet(genetic) but have been wearing Naturalizer shoes on and off since I was about 12. They have some outlets in the US and the shoes come in narrow, regular, and wide and are actually cute! I also bought some Karl Lagerfeld wedges today actually and while not all their shoes are good for the feet I definitely saw a few good pairs.
Same as why not to make cars estructured as Lamborghinis without the expensive sport engine? It is not allowed... It would change status quo, many things are made to be able (or "appropriate") to be used only by young women, since, if you want anything to be desirable, just market it with beautiful young women being happy with it... Many try to go out of the box, but the dominance will be as always in ways to make the most money out of people
I’ve heard Ally NYC aims to do this with their pumps (they have memory foam, insoles, and three different widths per size), but they’re very expensive. Haven’t tried them myself but the reviews are promising.
I'm Italian and we are very lucky because we have a huge tradition of shoe makers here. We can get lovely, well made and original shoes at a reasonable price tag. Of your list I have the converse, that I don't like because of their non existent support sole, a pair of dr. Martens (not the classic design though) which I unexpectedly love, and a pair of Grunland Ugg- look-alike very comfy (also a brand made in Italy - affordable, very well made). Of the shoes you mentioned I'd probably invest on Chanel ballerina flats (which are made in Italy, BTW) but I'm afraid they wouldn't be worth the expense. I can buy made in Italy ballerina flats for a quarter of their price 🤔. To your list I'd add espadrilles wedge shoes. They're comfy, romantic and feminine.
Yes on te doc Martens, best shoe i ever had. Totally worth the money. I need them for work, my feet almost don't sweat in them, even in this warm weather. High Quality!
If the quality has gone downhill that's a shame. Though a size 3 in the kids (teen?) range is still the best quality and best fitted boot for me on the high street.
The adidas recyclable shoes are the best, futuristic and simple, this should be the future of fashion, recyclable when returned, you just pay for the duration you wear them
I have a few Louboutin shoes. They're pretty-ish but yes the sole wears off and worse....they are the most uncomfortable thing in the world. Better buy some Manolo's and be done with the whole thing.
I actually found their heels to be quiet comfortable. Maybe not for a long walk or at the airport but does it for me at work in the office or for when I go out for dinner
At 5 ft 8 in tall I am way too tall to be comfortable in Manolo blahniks. Also they closed their United States flagship store in Manhattan, New York. I always admired their beauty and uniqueness but unfortunately price tag and being so tall they just weren't practical for me to buy
I have a pair of vintage Manolo kitten heels and they are very comfortable! I would go dancing in them if I ever have a reason to! I found them on Poshmark for less than $100
Thanks for this video. In my opinion, the Doc Martins are the best "quality vs price tag", plus they are iconic and represent many things that are weaved into pop culture as well as our social fabric (both positive and negative). Thank you for calling out Louboutin's, I am glad to hear that his shoes finally getting some slack, as they are overpriced and painfully uncomfortable. They are not made to ensure comfort at all.
Hey Justine, I might have added the YSL tribute heels and the Stuard Witzeman nudist heels. Two very popular and iconic pair of heels in my view. In regards to flat shoes I'd add Tom's
You have the prettiest hands! I'm in love with your ring (the big one on the left hand). You forgot the Hermes sandal. The Adidas should not cost more than $120, maybe less. It should be accessible to everyone. Your videos are awesome!
@@zucchinigreen I haven't seen the nest looking ring in her collection, just the Charlotte and the Jeanne. I like the silver one that looks like a nest.
For the recyclable Adidas it seems like a system should be set up where you pay a several hundred dollars flat payment (ex. $250 USD) but then if you grow out of them or they break you bring them back to be recycled and receive a new pair. I would pay a lot for a lifetime guarantee shoe like that.
People who man the re-cycle facility need to get paid, so they price would need to be much higher than that. I think best of the both world is pay X amount flat and then 30-50% of that for re-cycling, that would motivate people to re-cycle them, save money to loyal customers and guarantee that people on the factory get paid.
Here in Texas we have several "off brand converse" and I have found that the Converse shoes last twice as long as the off brand. They are comfortable for walking and standing all day but are very slippery in wet environments.
Ewa Moczulska it’s quite possible they did start out as ‘uglies’, but you need to pop them on your cold feet and then pass judgement. When I was younger, no one would have been seen dead in them on the street. It took an American to make them an out of doors footwear item - none other than Pamela Anderson! And I would consider Crocs iconic too, recyclable and from recycled plastics might not be too difficult for them.
Ewa Moczulska I totally agree! I never understood what people liked about these boots. I think most iconic shoes, like handbags, are not worth that much money. At least, the Chanel ones are elegant and timeless.
I have Crocs and wear them at home. I never liked regular slippers, but Crocs are really comfortable. I wouldn't go out or to work with them, though. ^^
I love your video and the touch of survey is very nice. I hope you keep it this way, simple, informative and clear explanation - no background music or other distractions with the crazy editings that other youtubers do now.
I think Birkenstock’s should have made the list in place of that last shoe. Not sure how that is iconic if it hasn’t even been produced yet. Otherwise, I agree with most of the others.
When I clicked on this video I thought, "certainly these shoes will be way out of my price range and I'll never own a pair," but two of the shoes mentioned are in my closet! 😄 I enjoy my Converse and Dr. Martens very much, though they were a bit of an investment considering I am on a student's budget, haha.
I have Chanel, Ugg, Converse and Louboutin shoes. My rationale is that your body changes from size to size but your feet tend to stay the same so iconic shoes can be kept forever. Btw to anyone longing for a pair of Loub heels - they are crippling so prepare to display them as ornanents. My favourite comfortable shoes are Josef Siebel. Another point is that I am a cancer patient and my husband has instructions to auction my designer shoes for Cancer Relief when I can no longer wear them.
Actually a shoe size can change! After pregnancy a lot of women have to go up a size. Also, sorry to hear about your illness. two months ago my mom passed away from cancer. I do hope you will recover!
Hi Justine, I find your videos informative and pretty entertaining. I am from the Philippines but currently living in Norway. I love all your content (it’s 2 AM here and still binge-watching all your videos 😁) I hope you’ll continue making this kind of video for us. Much ❤️.
Actually, the buy one, give one policy that Toms have is hurting local businesses in the places they donate. And they make a lot of profit considering the shoes are really cheap to make. The show “Adam ruins everything” has a segment on how that policy is harmful ua-cam.com/video/hX0g66MWbrk/v-deo.html
What does that word ethical mean to you. Is it......Not harming the he environment, vegan, not using power from power stations, recycling. I personally think it’s about recycling, and not wasting anything. So leather shoesfor me.
Happy to know that brands like Adidas are begining to create sustainable options! If I was to make this list, I would also include Vans Old Skools, AF1, Stansmiths, and Superstars
It's not necessarily worse (there are differences depending on the production country) but the leather is thinner, for instance. That's more comfortable to wear but makes it harder to keep the shape...
@@slbarbieri1725 oh my God, YES! The first pair I got when I was 13 I broke them in with my own sweat, blood and tears. Curiously never had blisters with the following pairs I bought.
Dear Justine, I’ve watched so much content from this channel and I honestly feel enchanted by your delightful persona , I absolutely thank you for all your useful advice and information, you’re kind to share so many interesting views on the fashion industry and styling, I send you best regards from Mexico 💛
Justine, this was an awesome video. Entertaining, informative and a history lesson too! Thank you! Make more like this please. 🎬🎥 An iconic shoe for me is the one that looks and feels great! 💖👠👡👢👟👞🥿
I have one pair of Louboutin shoes that I purchased and almost never wear because they are horribly uncomfortable. I had special red rubber bottoms put on the part of the sole that touches the ground to protect the red lacquer because it scuffs off if you even look too hard at them lol. SO not worth the money honestly. I never really found Doc Martins all that comfortable TBH, they rub in the back like crazy when they are new, but they are iconic and were so popular when I was a teen in the 90's so I had them in a bunch of colors and styles, even the knee high kind (which are a nightmare to lace) and a special patterned pair that I got in Covant Gardens back in 1997. I guess I should tell my parents they better not throw them out, they are still sitting in my closet back at their house hahaha. This video was actually really interesting, I knew of all of them aside from the ADIDAS.
sacredsiren yup, I remember wearing doc martens in the 90s too. They cut the back of my feet and I found them quite heavy. Not sure if they are still like that though.
interesting, that they seem to be comfortable for you. my feet ache, when I ware shoes, that are completely flat and the sole is very thin. the combination is hurting me a lot. but then, I mus say, I have to wear inlays in my shoes. maybe it is just not right for those, that need orthopedic support. unfortunately because of that, I cannot wear every shoe, I would love to own.
Fantastic video!! 👠👢👟 The only thing that comes to mind that would be worthy to add to this list is the original and iconic Mary Jane, and yes that joke Carrie Bradshaw made about Manolo Blahnik Mary Jane's as an "urban shoe myth" 😂😄. As an Australian the whole thing about the American company Deckers owning the trademark in other regions and then suing Australian companies for using UGG and derivatives is actually heartbreaking and infuriating 😡. Justine did a decent job in researching this for the video, but of course the problems are very complex and far more nuanced than can be explained in a few minutes. In cases where certain protections are not possible; I am personally a big supporter for the term/naming/labelling of UGG to be completely regionally protected (e.g. like champagne can only come from Champagne and everywhere else it's sparkling wine), because counterfeiting is such a huge problem.
@@annlidslot8212 thank you for your response. I hope it can happen soon too! Justine made a good point that original uggs are of superior quality with waterproof seams, but this is near impossible to tell from all the counterfeits.
I would love to watch you talk about nails and nail polish! If you could talk about how you decide on a color, or anything you have to say on it... Or if you do it yourself or get them done elsewhere. They always look so stunning!
I think that the iconic high-end shoes are something to collect, i also think the price is justified when the design is so good that it stays popular for that many years. The designer in that case really deserve the success.
At 59 I just bought a pair of pink & white checked canvas Vans. I work in an office so heels are my typical daily wear so the Vans seems like “vacation” shoes.
i prefer vans as well, i tried on a lot of converse but they were always uncomfortable, i have an issue with my little toe and i can get some bad blisters. the vans are good because they're a bit wider and the slip on thing is so easy.
Justine I absolutely love your videos. I'm a French learner and I think it'd be awesome if you could do some fashion videos in French too! It would help me get used to conversational French and give me the vocabulary I need to talk about something I love (clothes!).
Your videos give me like culture, good taste, or maybe just inform me, not sure but love the practical, straight forward but also specific way you illustrate us. Great job! Very interesting and delicate
Thank you for another great video, Justine! I have several pairs of Chanel two-tones that I've had for more than 25 years. Very high quality and definitely worth the money.
Birkenstock Arizona, Salvatore Ferragamo Vara, Kurt Geiger Alice, Valentino Rockstud, Doc Marten 1460, Church’s Burwood brogues, all iconic and I love these and wear them all constantly!
As a vegan, I love the idea of the Adidas shoes. I don't wear leather, which limits which shoes I can wear (sorry, Stella, but your shoes are out of my budget). I hope more companies will follow the example of Adidas. There are several other brands I have found that are headed in that direction. This was an interesting topic. Thank you, as always, for another helpful and entertaining video!!
@@blah914, good to know. Of course I would have researched the company before any purchases, but you've saved me the time. As is often the case, there are both positive and negative sides to purchasing options. I try to stay up on companies that are not only ethical to animals, but to people and the planet as well. This founder certainly doesn't fall into that category. This is a company I know little about, but you've opened my eyes. Thank you!!
I bought a paid of Christian Labouton only once and never again. The most uncomfortable expensive shoes. I have spent almost $800 and fold them for $220 with a big loss. Luxury doesn’t equal comfort
Thank you justine, you put a tremendous amount of research into your videos. They are most informative & facinating. Thank-you for your very clear, consice presentation, & that the lovely warmth of your personality shines through as well. Merci beaucoup, & bravo !
The only shoe I would buy on this list is Dr. Martens I have a very old pair from my teens, they are so completely comfortable and durable I’ll never need to buy another pair. I would never buy Any of the other shoes! I never wear heals either...
Hi, Justine! I feel that two other types of boots are iconic, at least in the US: 1. American cowboy boots (but there is no one brand that might stand out). Some classic brands are Dan Post, Lucchese, Justin, and Tony Lama. 2. Frye riding boots; they are timeless and well-made.
hey, Justine. I love your videos, but I am a bit held back on some things: i am vegan, so no leather or sheepskin etc. Do you think you could do a vid or two on vegan fashion (and/or some on eco-friendly fashion), please? I would love to hear your imput. Thanks!
Yes! Though I am not vegan, I would like to see what innovations are new to vegan footwear. In the past, the options were always some form of plastic or non durable fabric.
I am interested in vegan fashion as long as it is not made of polyester, plastic or any material that takes hundreds of years, or perhaps never, to biodegrade
After the first fleet had arrived in Australia, sheep were introduced to the country so as to send the wool back to England. The Aboriginals would not have had access to sheep skin shoes. They would of used kangaroo or other animals that were available in the country.
@@godnaut Yes godnaut, I was about to post the same thing. I've never heard of indigenous Australians wearing footwear before European settlement in Australia - but I would be interested if anyone can prove any different.
@@alphabet_soup123 I googled it and there were apparently a few kinds of footwear, but it wasn't widespread. Google "indigenous australian footwear" and you'll find some info.
laura k thank you for pointing this out. Generally Justine is spot on with her information but she got this wrong. Also in my opinion the best ugg boots are hand made by two sisters in the south west of Western Australia in a small town called Denmark. The brand is called Jassi. Best ugg boots I’ve ever had. Also, only bogans wear them as shoes, haha!! Although I have worn mine to duck up to the shops (and spontaneous gardening!!)
I used to live in Australia and got a pair of "ugg" boots custom made at a local leather and wool goods store. I was able to pick out the pelt and everything! With waterproofing treatment, they lasted me at least five years, including some properly horrid winters back in the States! They weren't cheap but were definitely a worthwhile investment and felt more authentic. There's an Australian brand of ugg-style fake-leather boots called Emu that's also pretty popular over there
Hey Justine! Liked the report you made with also some facts and history of the brand! Here’s what I think on the 2 questions you asked: 1) If these are worthy the price tag? Yes, if you have a certain Status in the society and all you wear must be reliable to that, and No if you are a normal human, even businessman, who do not have to comply with certain society obligations. 2) What other status recognizable shoes we remember? - I would say over the knees boost + the strap sandals both from Stewart Weitzman and the rockstuds by Valentino
I love my Louboutins. Personally, I feel the wear adds character and safety to the shoe-- when the shiny painted leather sole wears off, they are less slippery. At that time, I usually get them resoled with a vibram rubber in red-- combined with patent leather, this could be pretty water resistant. The shoes I purchased are not "classic" and this makes them timeless in a way... like a piece of art. (I've had people stop me for a picture!) When purchased in the right size and shape for your feet, they are just as comfortable as any high heel-- the trick is to make sure the shoes have enough room for your toes, and that the pitch/ height works with your balance.
Hi Justine, First: you look so pretty and fresh today with your slight tan!! The only shoe I would buy is the Chanel. The rest I would never wear and, to be honest, I wish no one else would either! One shoe that I wish you featured would be the Sperry Top Sider boat shoe. I love them!! Have you heard of them Justine? I am thinking of buying a pair. Lovely to see you and thanks for your video!!
The Wingtop Oxfords are iconic too. I was hoping you would mention it. I would love to know the story behind them. Victorian-Edwardian Lace-up Boots too are iconic.

Oh my, Dr Martens ❤ I wore nothing but Martens from age 13 to 25, with everything from trousers to dresses, still have all but one pair, eight pairs in total. It's the most durable shoe I ever had. Sure they look a bit scuffed now but they are still waterproof and the leather looks nice. I think as far as iconic shoes are concerned you missed Birkenstocks and Crocs. Both may not aesthetically pleasing (Birkenstocks are okay with some outfits) but everyone recognises them right away.
I only wear Finnamics by Finn Comfort. The shoes are made in Germany and are "rocker bottoms " in that your weight bears down on the center of the foot thus relieving pressure on your toes and ankles. I have extensive arthritis in my toes and these are the only shoes I can wear for any length of time. They are a tad pricey but worth every penny.
If you can stretch your definition of fashionable past heels and ballerina flats, Dansko and Vionic both make shoes with excellent support for plantar fasciitis. A slight heel can ease the battle between tight calf muscles and plantar fascia and strong arch support and ample shock absorption are your friends. Hope you feel better soon!
Back in the 80s when I was single, working in London, I had lots of spare money for clothes and shoes. My favourite brand of shoes was Bally and I remember I had a wonderful pair of pale grey leather snakeskin effect high heels. I adored those shoes. I used to wear them to work with a pale grey suit and I felt a million dollars. There used to be a shoe shop on Oxford Street that sold Italian leather shoes, and myself and my Aunt (who was my shopping buddy; we also worked in the same building) would at lunchtime, haunt this particular shoe shop. My aunt had a thing for shoes and it was she who got me hooked on buying shoes too. Those days, in my early twenties I could wear high heels all day and never worry. I had some wonderful and expensive shoes. I wore a different suit to work every day. I was single, and had nobody else to worry about. However, I never would have bought Chanel or Louboutin because I didn't then and still don't regard them as worth spending all that money on. Sadly, come the late 80s, I got a mortgage and a flat, and gone were the days of spending lots of money on shoes and clothes. It's been that way ever since!!!!
You were an amazing "find" tonight. I watch your videos for the last 3 hours and i also have to go to work in the morning! :P Thank you very much for the quality of your work! Keep going!

TOTALLY AGREE
So true! 😂
Couldn’t agree more!
As a Scot I would like to mention the Hunter Wellington. Timeless, recognisable, practical. They last for ever! Essential wet weather gear.
Kind regards to you and all of your viewers.
My Hunter boots are the best fashion item I have ever spent money on. They are both functional and fashionable.
I am now 55 😊
I am on my fifth pair of wellingtons since I was in my early 20ies, they do NOT last forever, they dry out and crack, and I mostly wear mine in rain and muddy roads
@@katherinemorelle7115 maybe you can look on the internet? I've found new and never worn Drs for cheap and they have ones with s side zipper too!
I found that many people (in Boston) frowned at my DMs, and assumed things about me!
A staple of good quality is..... good quality.
sLOTFY100 Thank you. That’s good to know. I’ll find other shoes that make my size 9s look smaller - and save my money too
One of the best things about being in a wheelchair is never having to worry about wear and tear on my shoes! 😂. Also, I can now wear heels again without having to worry about sore feet (or in my case badly hurting my back).
Maybe that would make the more expensive shoes worth it in my case. They’ll certainly last a lot longer on me than they would most people.
I bought some similar looking ones off of Zappos for waaay cheaper
Gucci and Tods!!!!! ♥️
As an Australian I find people wearing ugg boots outside quite strange, in Australia they really are treated more as a house slipper and you rarely see anyone in ugg boots if they're not also wearing pajamas/a dressing gown etc.
I'm in US and that's what I thought when first looking at them, they look like slippers lol
I was told the exact same thing by a sales associate while shopping for UGGS in Sydney...LOL!! I only use them as slippers!
Yes!!!!
I adore them! Most comfortable shoe I own.
personally, I think Dr.
I wish I could say the same. Bought a pair of jadons a year ago and wore them probably 2-4 times a week and they ripped at the back a couple weeks ago
Thank You for telling us the sole of Louboutins wears off in an esthetically unpleasing way! What awaste of money it would be
They're not very comfortable either. If I'm spending lots on a shoe, it has to feel comfortable when I walk around in them!
@@alphabet_soup123 yes, that is what my rich girlfriend told me a few times already. They are some of the most uncomfortable shoes she has
@varick wettlaufer I was planning on doing that, because I like the asthetic of red soles especially if you are wearing all black *-*
I hope the adidas one won't be so pricey..
This type of clean fashion needs to be accessible to everyone.
If they’re priced similarly to other running shoes I’d def buy them! c.£80 would have me sold, anything above £110 I’d struggle to justify
Indeed, sustainable fashion should be available for everyone. Around 70 to 100 €.
100€ is not "available for everyone" at least by developing countries's standerds......
And they are very uncomfortable. I have a pair of So Kates and I can never wear them ever again. Sad.

As I keep on watching your channel, I am more convinced that price tag doesn't mean durability and comfort. Better to pick a good quality and if I can, at an affordable price. That's what this channel is teaching me. Thank you 😊
Agreed. I am wearing a top covered in bobbles which made me look up the rules of durable, affordable and good quality
I have a vintage pair of classic CHANEL nude and black two tone slingback shoes and I love them. I prefer the vintage CHANEL shoes as they are better quality than the modern ones.
Birkenstocks and Hunter Wellies are pretty big too! Agree with Dr Martens making the list.
need4speedy these were the other 2 I was thinking of
Yes! As a countryside living Brit I can’t imagine not having a pair of Hunters!
Birks, of course!
Birkenstocks are SOOO comfy to wear
need4speedy I agree, Birkenstock’s are probably my favorite shoes ever made.
I would buy Adidas from recycled material at 150.- Euro if they would donate part of the price to the "4Ocean" movement that removes glass and plastic from the ocean.
They will use plastic waste from the oceans, so yes, it makes sense!
We need more organizations like that
Me too
Well said!!! We vote with our 'pocketbook' ($£etc.)!

If I was going to own any of them I would go for the Chanel shoes. I think they're an absolutely stunning example of simple and elegant design. Though, to be honest, I think I would go for a dupe. Not sure my soul would handle paying £500+ for a pair of shoes...
There are places online where you can get customized shoes for around $200. It is possible to recreate virtually any shoe design
I agree, they are gorgeous but won’t pay that price.
@@Micro-Nova Totally! Especially since there are brands that produce good quality shoes in Europe for a fraction of the price (Högl, Peter Kaiser, Bobbies to name a few)

How about the *Adidas Stan Smith* shoes or the *Timberland original yellow boots?*
I think they're kind of iconic!

Yea, way more than the McQueen uglies.
I don’t know if it’s just me but even Nike Air Force One. But maybe it’s more a North America thing.
Ditto.
Minskie Nini no, i‘m living in Europe, you see Nike Air Force one very often
I recognized all the shoes but only own the Converse. I think Birkenstock sandals would be considered iconic as well. Thank you!
Birkenstock are really hideous shoes. I would never ever pick those even if they were for free.
Patsy Stone I think uggs are also hideous, but made the list 😂
And Birkenstock have a huge comeback right now, everyone is wearing them in Berlin today.. I didn't like them at first until I tried them on (my mothers actually, fifteen years ago), and now my sense of aesthetic has really adapted to the comfort :D
HealingTiger my daughter now wears them, I’ve owned 5 pairs. They may not be anything Carrie Bradshaw would wear but my feet thank me every day
Indigo Periwinkle but Uggs don’t have to be pretty- they’re slippers.
Interesting. I considered putting MB in this list...
You should know that Manolo Blahnik BB runs extremely narrow. I have a couple pairs of other ones of his and they are the most comfortable including the Hangisi. They mould to the feet. But the BB's even for my very narrow heel are too narrow in the toe even going up half a size.
Louboutin promised a sexy shoe and hes delivered this, he hes never promised comfort.
@@LSSYLondon Thanx for pointing it out! I didn't know. I won't be getting any MB then. My feet are wide :-(
I saw a documentary where Louboutin said that he wants to make shoes one cannot walk in 😅 as a person with sensitive feet that makes me cry🤣
That man has no reason to make shoes🤣
Dr.Marten's are worth every penny! Very strong, durable, last for years and never go out of style.
Yes! I've had mine for 14 years :D
You're such a lovely person. Listening to you talk is like getting in a warm bath 😊
Awww... So true!
Have you listened to Shaun? Entirely different content (he mostly debunks alt right talking points), entirely different accent (from the north of England, I think), but the same warm bath feel to his voice.
Highly recommend, even if only for something soothing to fall asleep to. 😂
Yes I love this beautiful woman!
Neartmhor yo I love Shaun!!
Dr. Scholl's wooden sandals. Iconic summer sandal now sells for $90. I wore these for years beginning in the 1960's. Now made in China.
Oh I remember them! Couldn't walk in them for the life of me but boy they were everywhere once. :]
Oh yes! My first pair were $10.00 USD in 1972
I STILL have my original wooden ones!
I remember my mum had them in the 70’s, were they actually good for the feet?
i got a pair on zappos for $50; they ran big
Well done Justine!I love the way you talk fast fashion, recyclable shoes, work ethic etc!hugs'n' kisses!
Justine, I enjoy your videos. Another iconic shoe is checkerboard Van's!
I think Vans should make to the list :3 It's the most comfortable shoes I've ever had (I got the slip-ons).
As much as I agree that two-tone Chanel shoes are iconic, I still don't think that any shoes should cost this much. It's just shoes, they won't last very long.
Yes, unless you collect them as Alexandre Vasiliev does.
To me Manolo blahnik are more iconic than Louboutin!
Oh my goodness, yes!

Yes yes yes. One day I want to buy Manolo Blahnik Hangisi
manolos are also very iconic and a little bit more comfy than louboutins :') but louboutins have been iconic for longer you know what I mean?

Could you tell the name of the brand which produces well made Uggs. Thank you
Hi, any Italian brand recommendations in particular? Thank you!

I swear by Dr. Martens- I agree it is absolutely an iconic shoe
Yes on te doc Martens, best shoe i ever had. Totally worth the money. I need them for work, my feet almost don't sweat in them, even in this warm weather. High Quality!
Agreed. I have had three pairs and wear my Mary Janes to work on a concrete floor.
Ya, me too. They are truly the best shoes if you have to stand on concrete all day.
If the quality has gone downhill that's a shame. Though a size 3 in the kids (teen?) range is still the best quality and best fitted boot for me on the high street.
I finally splurged on a new Made In England pair after having high top and low pairs made in Thailand.
A WORLD of difference.

Showing my age, but iconic for me would be Keds - the canvas covered, rubber soled shoes. - both the tennis shoe and the deck shoe are classics.
I loved Keds and I'm only just now 20!

Uggs - I always thought it was short from "ugly". To me they belong in the same drawer with Crocs.
Crocs only suck until you get foot pain & need shoes you can wear without pain.
Ewa Moczulska I totally agree! I never understood what people liked about these boots. I think most iconic shoes, like handbags, are not worth that much money. At least, the Chanel ones are elegant and timeless.

It's not necessarily worse (there are differences depending on the production country) but the leather is thinner, for instance. That's more comfortable to wear but makes it harder to keep the shape...
They give blisters to everyone I know.
@@slbarbieri1725 oh my God, YES! The first pair I got when I was 13 I broke them in with my own sweat, blood and tears.
Curiously never had blisters with the following pairs I bought.
Justine, you are glowing! The summer sun and the lipstick are treating you well. :)
She has new studio lighting
Dear Justine,
I’ve watched so much content from this channel and I honestly feel enchanted by your delightful persona , I absolutely thank you for all your useful advice and information, you’re kind to share so many interesting views on the fashion industry and styling, I send you best regards from Mexico 💛
Justine, this was an awesome video. Entertaining, informative and a history lesson too! Thank you! Make more like this please.

An iconic shoe for me is the one that looks and feels great!
I’m 57 years old and 5’8” tall.
I wear Tieks all the time, or Tom’s flats.
Life is too short to be uncomfortable.
interesting, that they seem to be comfortable for you. my feet ache, when I ware shoes, that are completely flat and the sole is very thin. the combination is hurting me a lot. but then, I mus say, I have to wear inlays in my shoes. maybe it is just not right for those, that need orthopedic support. unfortunately because of that, I cannot wear every shoe, I would love to own.
I tried Toms yesterday and they were really uncomfortable. Plus they seemed cheap.
I prefer barefoot shoes from ethical brands
@@DanjaundTom I agree. I've always found Toms to be very uncomfortable and ill fitting as well as cheaply made.
@Thornback Same. Even low heels are more comfortable than flats for me. My feet are super flat and wide:( I need arch👏support👏
@ThornbackNot only you've just made my day, I completely agree with everything you said 😜
Fantastic video!!
Hi, I really like your idea. Hopefully someone in a better position to do so then I (or maybe you) get on that really really soon. Yours, Ann
Vans are Iconic in the way that Chucks are. Spicoli in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" made them world famous.
i prefer vans as well, i tried on a lot of converse but they were always uncomfortable, i have an issue with my little toe and i can get some bad blisters. the vans are good because they're a bit wider and the slip on thing is so easy.
Justine I absolutely love your videos. I'm a French learner and I think it'd be awesome if you could do some fashion videos in French too! It would help me get used to conversational French and give me the vocabulary I need to talk about something I love (clothes!).
I'm a Dr. Marten's and the two-tone chanel lover!!! Thanks for this video😉
Shoes, my weakness! I Own some those. Thanks for the video Justine.
Great video!
Perhaps inklude Birkenstock?
The sports shoe sound interesting if it lets your foot breathe. McQueen shoes looks amazing as does Chanel.
Ulla Korgaard I was also thinking of Birkenstock. They are super comfy
Quite interesting...Thank you. I can't afford any of them, lol.
I bought the cap toe chanel ballet flats when I was in Paris last. I love them and I would buy the sling backs next.
Birkenstock Arizona, Salvatore Ferragamo Vara,
Kurt Geiger Alice,
Valentino Rockstud,
Doc Marten 1460,
Church’s Burwood brogues, all iconic and I love these and wear them all constantly!
Then as someone who appreciates ethics, be aware that the founder of adidas was an OG nazi party member.....
I've learned so much. Thank you so much for always putting so much work in your videos. I love it 💛😘
Love the history on this video about how and when these iconic shoes came about. I didn’t know how old Dr. Martin’s are!
Thank you justine, you put a tremendous amount of research into your videos. They are most informative & facinating. Thank-you for your very clear, consice presentation, & that the lovely warmth of your personality shines through as well. Merci beaucoup, & bravo !
I was also expecting Vivienne Westwood platform heels in your list. So iconic and absolutely beautiful!
I love the Chanel's but could never afford them. Also, this was really informative. Thank you.
The only shoe I would buy on this list is Dr. Martens I have a very old pair from my teens, they are so completely comfortable and durable I’ll never need to buy another pair. I would never buy Any of the other shoes! I never wear heals either...
Roger Vivier mid-heel with the buckle and Ferragamo's loafers (mocassin) are great classics!
Hi, Justine! I feel that two other types of boots are iconic, at least in the US:
1. American cowboy boots (but there is no one brand that might stand out). Some classic brands are Dan Post, Lucchese, Justin, and Tony Lama.
2. Frye riding boots; they are timeless and well-made.
Suddenly I feel good about my involuntary hoarding of Converse
hey, Justine. I love your videos, but I am a bit held back on some things: i am vegan, so no leather or sheepskin etc. Do you think you could do a vid or two on vegan fashion (and/or some on eco-friendly fashion), please? I would love to hear your imput. Thanks!
That would be awesome! There are so many innovative and sustainable forms of vegan leather coming out right now!
Linda Liriel Check out Jenny Mustard. She did a nice colaboration with Justine a year or so back. Jenny has great vegan ideas.
After the first fleet had arrived in Australia, sheep were introduced to the country so as to send the wool back to England. The Aboriginals would not have had access to sheep skin shoes. They would of used kangaroo or other animals that were available in the country.
laura k I think we can’t use the word ugg because the Australian was bought out and therefore lost the rights.
Maybe she meant that Australians had been wearing them well before the 1970's?
AFAIK, Australian Aboriginals generally didn't use footwear at all.
Here’s what I think on the 2 questions you asked:
1) If these are worthy the price tag?
In my opinion, none of them are worth their price. Thanks so much for this very interesting information; I was not aware of the new Adidas sneaker.
What about doc matters? Thay last forever, are extremely comfortable and look good. What more can you want?
Hi Justine,
First: you look so pretty and fresh today with your slight tan!!
Was just going to mention Sperry Top Siders. Thanks!
@@lanef58 Great minds think alike!!
The Wingtop Oxfords are iconic too. I was hoping you would mention it. I would love to know the story behind them. Victorian-Edwardian Lace-up Boots too are iconic.
Oh, Justine. You are a real UA-cam gem!!!
Beaucoup d'amour d'Iran 💗😚🙈🙇♀️
Oh my, Dr Martens ❤
I wore nothing but Martens from age 13 to 25, with everything from trousers to dresses, still have all but one pair, eight pairs in total.
@bloocarty 😂😂😂😂
Um no. Grunge was everywhere and that's how we dressed. And of course flannel. Oh so many flannel shirts.
@bloocarty I'm sure you'll have some fashion oddities of your own to look back on at some point in the future 😉
Anything that will help
with plantar fasciitis and are fashionable at the same time would be worth it!
Bolen Fujiwara God yes! Clarks artisan wedge heels are 👌
I only wear Finnamics by Finn Comfort. The shoes are made in Germany and are "rocker bottoms " in that your weight bears down on the center of the foot thus relieving pressure on your toes and ankles. I have extensive arthritis in my toes and these are the only shoes I can wear for any length of time. They are a tad pricey but worth every penny.
@@tribbles2955 with plantar fascitis you need support on your bridge, no more pressure, please 😭😭😭
Eva London ok really? I have this too, 10 years! It comes and goes. It sucks!
Thank you very much for the quality of your work! Keep going!
