    A suggestion I have:
    I'm sure that the reason you are hesitant to start flicking the cube is that it'll start to fall apart. The individual pieces would probably be fine; however, there's just too much flex.
    I suggest using thin string/thread superglued to form 4 diagonals in each individual cell. It'll probably bring it back above 30g, but I'd think you'd be able to speed cube much better.

    • @mal2ksc
      @mal2ksc 3 роки тому +34

      I thought about something similar, but maybe instead of one large hole in each face, he could make three or four smaller holes and leave support plastic in between. He'd probably have to give back the three grams shaved off this time, but it would be with far fewer compromises in function.

    • @Templarfreak
      @Templarfreak 2 роки тому +12

      this could be solved with a yet still stronger plastic as well, plastic with much less flex but with pretty much the same density, but it would be more expensive.
      alternatively, the frames could also be made slightly thicker and that would probably provide more support without adding that much extra weight, but it would be a bit harder to make because you'd have to be more precise and careful and more mindful about how much plastic you're removing.
      the only other idea i have beyond that is, tearing up the plastic yourself in this manner is probably disrupting the structural integrity of the frames of the cube pieces themselves, if you could cast the plastic directly into this shape using a mold, or more realistically just getting them custom-made, that may also improve the sturdiness some.

    About 3D-printing: many have suggested that this approach would be significantly lighter and easier, but I disagree.
    In my experience, 3D-printed plastic tends to be significantly weaker than its mass-produced counterparts, making it difficult to create even a very basic 3x3. The intricacies of a speedcube mechanism would be near impossible to replicate on an ordinary 3D-printer. The same is true for the outer grid of plastic holes that make up this puzzle: in order to achieve the same weight, the plastic would be much more brittle than my actual speedcube with holes in it. Further, the amount of human effort to create and iterate such a design, even for someone who is competent in 3D-modeling (I am) and has a 3D-printer, would be at least close to the time I spent modding, and much more if you count the time spent printing. All of this for a cube that's heavier, more fragile, and would require many more hours of custom sitckering.

      Consider SLA or nylon SLS printing, should be a good process for that.

    • @buildthis2324
      @buildthis2324 3 роки тому +12

      Resin printing or injection molding is where you want to look for manufacturing processes to simplify the build; and lighten the part using programs such as SimScale. Your right about the standard FDM printing being on the weaker side on average, but only by a small margin. Its all dependent on the resolution possible with the printer as well as other factors. I still have parts around in Carbon Fiber Polycarbonate that are very close to the strength of metal. My two poor snips lost to one part testing the strength. But your hobby, your choices.

    You could try trimming only the external faces to prevent internal binding, leaving the inside faces solid would let them slide while still removing a significant amount of material.

    I think you could make this somewhat viable by leaving crossbars on the cubes to increase rigity and structural integrity. Like it would take a hell of a lot longer to do by hand but surely it would be worthwhile

    This cube needs to become another flagship model, like mass produced

  • @psychtank8681
    @psychtank8681 3 роки тому +4

    Mass helps with rigidity, responsiveness, and then conserving the momentum itself. I think that cube is far off the sweet spot where it's rigid and ideal for cubing. Otherwise you could've made the contacts smoother.

    While I don't know much about "cubing" I would say a way to make it move easier and less catchy/bitey would likely be sand the inside edges with increasingly higher and higher grits and lube. The only probably with sanding it is you might remove too much material if you start too low or are not careful. I would suggest the lube firearms use(like a CLP) but I don't know how it would react to the plastic the cube is made of. If not that use some sort of water based lube or whatever lubes are on the market for cubes. The other problem with sanding is the time it will take but to make it smoother it is likely necessary.
    I would suggest maybe a custom carbon fiber cube. Problem likely expensive to make and finding someone to make one for you. Also it might not even be lighter at that scale.

    You might want to leave one diagonal line per face on the pieces so retain integrity. That way it will not deform so easily and you might be able to apply more force.
    This style of cube would probably look great on metal wires, probably aluminum to keep on the light side.

  • @gauravshah1843
    @gauravshah1843 3 роки тому

    Try leaving diagonal truss on the individual cube faces it will increase the weight slightly but you would be able to speed solve.

    a minimal surface area cube would be cool, though it probably wouldnt retain its cube shape too well
    alternatively you can see how much more weight can be saved if you ignore keeping it cub shaped, by shaving down all the corners so that its more spherical, itll still be the same puzzle, just ball
