    Something else to consider if the bubbles never seem to go completely away. A small headgasket leak between the water jacket and the sealing surface around the piston is allowing compression into the coolant system and youll be burping air the rest of your life.

    I know this is an old video, but thanks for putting it out there. I'm contemplating changing the heater hose parts that are plastic to aluminum ones I've found online. The plastic tends to get brittle over time. I've never had to burp my Xterra and now I know what to look for.

    If you have a mechanical fan run the engine until the top hose and bottom hose are hot (tells you that the thermostat is open) also you can raise the front of the vehicle by parking up on a kerb or a hill, as air rises it will come out eventually but it can take a while.

    If you have air after they did a vacuumed coolant replacement, they either didn't seal it right, didn't use the machine correctly, or the machine just didn't work with your car for one reason or another. This did give me an idea for an overheating car I'm stumped on, so thanks for that.

    Whilst no harm is done in undertaking this exercise if you simply ensure the level of coolant in the expansion tank is at the correct (i.e. between LOW & HIGH mark) when cold and you start the car up and run it at fast idle with passenger cabin heater thermostat set to maximum and AC (if vehicle is fitted with one) turned on until the engine temperature reaches the correct high level. You can even go for a good long drive as well. Stop the engine, note the level of coolant in the expansion tank and if it is below the MIN mark top it up to the correct level and let the whole system cool overnight and recheck the coolant level in the expansion tank and top up if necessary. This is the correct procedure to purge air out of the cooling system. Unless there is a fault condition such as coolant leak you should never have to take off the radiator cap to top up the coolant or purge air out of the car's cooling system. The thermal expansion tank, by design, is always situated slightly below the height of the radiator cap. good video thanks. You will find that in the latest generation of petrol driven cars there is no air bleed valve in the cooling system either.

    • @SRR1213
      @SRR1213 2 роки тому +3

      That method does work but it'll take days. Some engines are sensitive to even slight overheating (like my 4.7 Powertech Dodge engine). Driving around with excess air can keep temps up higher than usual and cause all kinds of issues like valve stem seals messing up, head gaskets, etc. This method ensures that anytime air comes out, it's replaced by coolant and the temp stays at the correct range. And you only have to do it once or twice and not risk destroying your motor on the road.

    Just had my 2011 Frontier in for coolant service. Dealer stated 100,000 miles or seven years. $139. On way home blowing ice cold air at idle or low speed. Under acceleration or around 2,000 rpm it blows hot air. Took it right back and they supposedly checked it and system was functioning properly. Freakin 20 degrees out and can't use defroster as air coming out is ice cold. They wanted to change thermostat, but I felt it didn't need it as the heat was fine before service. I saw this video and tried your procedure. It took me around 45 minutes but got the air out. I loosened the pressure cap on the overflow tank after 30 minutes for a minute and a lot of air bubbled in the funnel ? Put cap back on bottle and ran motor about 15 minutes more and heat was coming out of the dash great as it always has. Thanks for the video, your a life saver.

    I had nearly the same thing happen from SEARS! (No wonder they’re gone now!) Coolant Change Special, took neighbor’s kids to see movie near Auto Center while being done.
    Car got hot on drive home. Had to get kids back so couldn’t take back to Sears.
    Had to fight/argue on phone but they reimbursed a new coolant tank, hose & several gallons of coolant.
    They used green when Res cap says only ORANGE (OAT-Aluminum engine.) But went to flush myself & initially green then orange so NEVER FLUSHED! (Prob drained plastic tank only!) So I flushed TWICE! Then refilled. Before that changed recovery bottle & attached hose! (They broke nozzle from coolant bottle inside hose & figured ‘Who’s gonna know?!’)
    Better to watch stuff like this & learn to do yourself!

I knew that the temperature is not going to rise that fast, the temperature gauge would shoot up crazy fast all the way maxed out to the hot, I would pull over immediately and turn off the truck. It was building a lot of air pressure up, so I would do what most people would not do I took the radiator cap off and it exploded all over me and the truck with cold antifreeze LOL. The radiator was cold and the hose was cold but it was hard as a rock, a guy looked at me cross-eyed when he was walking by he thought I got scalded by the antifreeze but it wasn't even hot I told him he just laughed like damn!! burp it ,try it with cap on and off, good luck from tassie

    I had the no heat at idle problem on my 2010 Xterra once after the dealership replaced a heater hose fitting that they broke. When I noticed the no heat issue I called the service advisor and took it right back to them. They ran it just like you did with the funnel and had it good to go within a half hour. While I was annoyed that I had a problem and had to go back to the dealer, I can't complain about the service at my dealership. (Now that I know the no heat on idle is due to trapped air, next time I will probably just fix it myself. I just wasn't sure what was up and figured it was something they did so they should fix it...) The 1st Generation Xterra's with the 3.3L engine (VG33E) had an air bleed screw on the top of the intake manifold. I wonder why the 4.0 (VQ40) doesn't have one? It seems like that would help with this problem since it would bleed the air out as you fill the system. I never had any problems with trapped air on my '01.

      @@mississippiafterdark you need to buy a funnel they're cheap they have the right nozzle to fit in to radiator as mine has a slant right on the inside of the rad. As for the rest im not %100. Pretty sure you fill it and start it and a bunch is gonna come pouring out so it's good to have a nice big funnel or something you can tip it into when it overflows the funnel Because radiator fluid expands heats up. Then once you do everything it tells you to do and get the bubbles out you need to I believe make sure it's full again after its cool down. Make sure you rev your engine up to 2rpm for a bit i forgot to do that step and i failed my 1st attempt
      Update : second attempt is a Success! this time for some reason it didn't overflow on me in my small funnel.
      I got lots of heat now at idle. Thanks to the maker of the video.

    So i have a question about yout video. I notice that your oil pressure gauge was reading low. The oil pressure is shows good whne the engine is cold at idle and when it warms up the the oil pressure on the guage starts to drop at idle. when the engine is at 3 to4 the oil pressure shows good on the gauge. The reason i ask is that my 2005 is doing the samething . it that a normal thing with pathfinders?

    How long did it bubble for? I have a 2017 frontier and from what I read in a frontier forum our trucks will keep bubbling due to the pressurized reservoir tank. What was your experience? Thanks brotha!

    Why do people insist on turning the heater fan on? You open the heat switch and water flows through the entire cooling system. Turning the fan on doesn't do anything except make your car hot inside

    I took my xterra to an independent mechanic to have the radiator and thermostat replaced. First he didn’t seal the thermostat so it leaked all kinds of coolant. Took it back to him to fix it. He sealed it with rtv sealer. He said he wouldn’t mess with it anymore. So it’s been about a week and the temp starts to rise after about 5- 10 minutes of Idling. So after doing research most likely there is air in the system so I’m gonna try to do this method

    • @kennyg9149
      @kennyg9149 3 роки тому

      You need to bleed the air out of your cooling system otherwise the temp will get super hot at idle. You can buy a radiator bleeding system on Amazon for less than $20. You need to park your car an upward angle to do this procedure. Good Luck!!

    • @llengford
      @llengford 4 роки тому +2

      @@obe1canobe146 that exactly how you do it you making you a plug out of a screwdriver with a rag and poke it down in the funnel hole and pull it out quickly.

  • @artsmith103
    @artsmith103 2 роки тому

    There's more to this than he described. I don't think the funnel is necessary. Just leave the cap a little loose and hope the airlock bubbles out. People open their caps all the time and I even replaced the radiator inlet hose and had heat soon after replacing half gallon of coolant. The scary part is having this problem after doing a cleaning flush :-( Wondering if the cleaning plugged the heating system.
    Edit: Maybe some cars have the heater core tube connections higher compared to the radiator overflow. I suggest find some hills to drive up and down to help move the air out of the heater core.

    Hi. I just bought a 2018 Nissan Frontier. My heater will blow warm and then cool. I took it in and they told me that there is a automatic sensor in the truck and it will regulate it self...crazy thing is I don’t have it on the auto system...I think they are lying to me cause it’s easier to send me away then fix my truck...did you have something similar? Blowing warm and then all of a sudden cool air?

    See that's exactly what I'm talkin about I have this PT cruiser it overheats but they replaced everything and I don't think they got all the air out of the system and they keep saying it's a head gasket but I don't think so. like your video at idle I don't have no heat but when I rev the engine I get heat I'm wondering could that be the issue I guess I'll have to do it my damn self 😤😒😉👊💪 great video it gives me Faith hopefully it's not the head gasket 🤔😨😢😉👊💪💯

  • @salman617

    I did this today and It worked temporarily but after removing the funnel and putting cap back on I’m still having the same issue. Are we supposed to fill the funnel with antifreeze before doing this? Also my funnel wasn’t tight and I kept squeezing the hose after pressing the gas pedal. Repeated doing this for an hour and still no luck 😢
