The reason the Manhattan project was authorized and given such a high priority was, in part, due to a letter sent by Albert Einstein to President Roosevelt warning him about the possibility of Nazi Germany developing the bomb first. As it turns out Germany wasn't even close by the time the war ended but the Soviet Union only took 4 years to catch up. The US had estimated it would take them 10 years, so that was a big shock. Imagine if they had managed to develop it first. I don't think there's any question that Stalin would have used it to force the US out of West Berlin after WW2 ended, and possibly all the way out of Europe too. That would mean no Marshall plan to help rebuild Western Europe and no NATO alliance. The world would be a very different place. 🤔
