- Synology is warning NAS users about several ransomware attacks that have hit several users now. Watch this video to learn more on how to prevent these on your Synology NAS server.
The attackers uses brute-force methods to guess the default password-essentially, they try every password possible until they get a match. Once they find the right password and gain access to the NAS device, the hackers encrypt all the files and demand a ransom.
Things you can do:
1. Disable Remote Access
2. Use A VPN for Remote Access
3. Secure Remote Access as Much as Possible
4. Turning on your Synology firewall
5. Enable 2-step verification
6. Run Security Advisor

Very insightful and helpful information. Thanks 🙏🏼
Thanks for the feedback :)
I once got a ransomware attack on my PC. Just formated the whole thing and that was that :)
damn sorry to hear that :( hope you had backups
Amazing, very helpful, please do more, subscribed and liked.
hey thanks for the kind words and sub! :)
Very good suggestions, actually my NAS is implementing similar protections...
Thank you for the feedback :)
Helps to keep all your data encrypted in the first place too so no matter whose hands the data passes it won't be recognizable.
Good call
it is not possible to put guests only in file reading so as not to be able to put any type of extraneous "file" in the nas?
Hi, it was a very good tutorial, thanks.
I have a question, regarding the vpn protection, the one you use in the synology its a free app right? As well the vpn client?
What about if you want to use a nort vpn, can you use it?
Tks in advance
Yes, correct its free then use something like open vpn for client.
I'm wanting to buy a synology mostly for photo backups from my computers, phone, and many ssd and thumb drives. I only need to be able to access it from my home, but I do want my phone to access it when connected to my home internet in order to back up photos and files. Can the synology be accessed from my phone when connected to the home wifi even if I don't enable remote access on the synology?
Hi yes it should be able to do that. No problem. Just so you know It won't back up until you're at home
Thank you, do have a video on how to upload larger files and not have the Nas time out
Sure you should not use the web interface and maybe use an FTP client or use the Synology drive app
Recently my PC got ransomware attack and the external hard drive connected with the PC also got affected.... If the ransomware attacks the NAS via local network from PC means the NAS will get affected or not ???
Yes it can be if that computer has access to the Nas like if they drive is mapped to it it can encrypt everything on that network drive from what I've seen and only affects the local c drive but now I had been seeing a lot of the have also infected anything that's on the network that it has access to That's why it's always good to have backups on the NAS to an external drive that's encrypted
Is there a 3Tb usb drive?
i know 1TB is but anything bigger would have have to external drive or SSD
