Practice makes perfect. Time saver: don't bother masking the weld-through primer around the spot you're patching at this stage of a project. Just give the general area a quick spray and go for it. You're going to clean and go over the entire area with epoxy primer/paint when you're done patching anyway. Though I admire you attention to detail.
Be careful with how much you grind the edges of welds. The heat affected zone is already the weakest/thinnest point, so if it's ground too much the patch will become null. Not saying this is the case, just a word of caution.
Ma dude…wow this brings back 1993….first car 81 280zx….the rust got so bad on the highway one night the seam popped btw. Windshield and the roof. But damn a fun car for the two yrs I had it. Grossly underpowered though

Great job on your build bro.. what voltage and speed settings did you find worked out best??? i have the same welder as you and I'm about to attempt some welding on my Z as well.
Your test panel was easy as it was backed by the sheet of steel whereas the patch panel was in air. You can clamp a thin (or thick if you can get it) sheet of copper behind your patch panels to give the same effect with no risk of it sticking.
Nice work, this stuff will always look ugly until you hit it with the filler and paint so don't give up! This video makes me want to go fix the rockers on my 280zx haha.
Totally didn’t spot your Datsun updates. Great vid. Your restoration dream on the Datsun is looking less like a dream and more like a reality. My current project car is a 3000gt Mitsubishi. Hoping to bring it back to its hay days. I have a Subie project on stand still due to funds for a new tranny. Last time took it out to streets of willow noticed some slippage.(go figure, it’s the original tranny). Came across the Gt and couldn’t pass it up. Just wanted to say thank you for your vids on your 24 hr lemons race build with the 3000gt. Gonna dive head first like you guys did a year ago on this project. Heard the horror stories about working on the 6G72 and the ridiculously small engine bay but I’m gonna take after your lead and persevere learning as I go. Thanks again. Now I know where to go for Datsun tips . Cheers from a supanovicetech
just watched yours and chrisfix's video. should definitely check his out for tips and tricks! also definitely wear more safety gear like long sleeves for welding and grinding. also don't batch wash clothes with anyone else's unless they like loose metal dust/shavings on their undergarments! i'm learning just like you!

Watching your videos over the past few months has given me so much confidence when I work on my Z. You explain everything really throroughly, and practically. I've never tried my hand at welding but I'd be more comfortable giving it a go having watched this vid. Thank you!

A lot of issues actually. The lens doesnt do a great job of protecting my eyes no matter what setting I try, so I kept seeing spots like I was staring at the sun. Also, the lens is bit too dark by default so its not easy to see what Im pointing at before pressing the trigger. AND the strap keeps coming loose which is SUPER annoying because I have to keep taking off my gloves to fix it.
I think the issue with the cheap straps is annoying enough that I should just get a new helmet. Maybe next time I go to Airgas I'll ask the employee for some guidance.

Be careful not to grind off too much off the edges when you clean them before welding, because you will blow holes if too thin.

Upol copper weld through primer. Anything else out there sucks

Id really really recommend a wire wheel to prep metal. Its not as harsh as a tiger paw and it gets it just as clean!!!

Yup. Causes the rust in the first place.
