SYLVESTER: State of emergency in Berlin - urgent appeal to firecracker hooligans
The Berlin police and fire department are preparing for New Year's Eve with an increased deployment of forces. Even before the official release of fireworks at 6 p.m. on New Year's Eve, unauthorized fireworks are being set off, posing a challenge for the emergency services. A total of 4,000 police officers and a tripled number of firefighters are on standby to prevent attacks on emergency services and deal with fires and emergencies. On the most eventful night of the year, the Berlin fire department expects the number of operations to exceed that of several weeks. Appeals are being made to the population to refrain from attacks so as not to jeopardize operations.
