The B.C. Rich Mockingbird is one of the most iconic, original and enduring electric solidbody guitar designs made by a company whose name doesn't begin with an F or a G. Since its introduction in 1975, the Mockingbird has remained a favorite of hard-rock and metal guitarists for its high-performance design and aggressive lines.
The B.C. Rich Mockingbird STQ retains many of the original Mockingbird's features, but it's much more affordably priced and refined, to satisfy the needs of today's players.

B.C Rich guitars are certainly sub-par at low prices but as you get into their higher end models they actually become very viable for their value. Also, older B.C Rich guitars get a lot of praise.

I have the transparent black. The Duncan designed pickups are hot! It has a lot of bite, growl, and sustain. Awesome clarity on a clean channel. You don't really notice the difference with all the switches unless it's on a clean channel. But the five way rotary switch all the way up sounds like a booster. Brand new they're about $1,400 but I got for $700 and it didn't even have a single scratch. It's awesome and I love it!

I know this an old post, but they are using Dimarzio de-activator pickups now. Back in the day, all stock BCR's all came stock with Dimarzio's. I have one on the way. I had the exotic extreme in spalted maple, and an evertune bridge. It is a beautiful guitar, but I wanted one that looks like the retro mockingbird, but if you want a real shredder then get the exotic extreme line. Fishman pup, locking wilkinson tuners, 5 piece neck through body. I'm glad those 3 guys bought them, and returned them to their former glory.

This guitar straight up kicks ass. The neck on it is amazing, the best neck of any of the 50+ guitars I owned, I liked it so much I picked up the Pro X version, but I don't like the Pro X as much as I like this one because it's not a hardtail. It has a Floyd Rose. Even though the EMGs sound great especially the 60 in the neck, it doesn't seem to ring as nice as the hardtail bridge, probably because of the hole through it required to mount the Floyd Rose. Some people get turned off by all of the controls but, once you start to play around with them, you'd be surprised how useful they become especially if you like to record, being able to reverse the phase and switch from single coil to humbucker comes in really handy. It's too bad he doesn't play anything clean in this demo because that's when you really notice the various tones of this guitar. If you play one of these that is properly setup, I doubt you'll leave the guitar shop without it.

I have both the MK7(looks exactly like this with a Floyd) and Special X and much prefer the later because it doesn't have the Floyd Rose. On the MK7 I have the FR blocked. I actually like having a fixed bridge with the fine tuning capability.

I love my Mockingbird! Except mine has been heavily modded. The little toggles don't do what they were originally supposed to. One is a kill switch, one kills all the coils except half of the neck p/u, and the other does the same for the bridge p/u. And the kill is not a toggle switch, but a button. Took a while to figure it all out, but now it is a blast to play, especially if you play the Tom Morello stuff.

Damn! Paul is getting good! I owned that exact same guitar except mine was the blue finish instead of the red. I really liked it, but all those little switches you see? I don't think they were hooked up on mine. I swear, I could not tell the difference no matter what configuration they were in. I even let my guitar teacher listen and he couldn't tell either. Out of phase, in parallel, whatever. Other than that, it was a badass ax, just as you see here. Made for metal, to be sure.

Great guitar playing, mate! Better than on other reviews of the same guitar. Cannot hear a huge diefference in tone, maybe it makes sense to roll the tone off 40% and use only 1 and the 5th position on capacitor control knob. Great review, looking forward for a clean tone review as well.

  • @GASMan-57

I bought one of these a couple weeks or so ago since AMS has the black burl on sale for $400-ish. The black burl didn't look anything like its webshots (no brown, more like black & greenish under-tone shades in strong sunlight). On sound, the jury is still out for me, but I think for someone looking for a budget MIK metal guitar, they would not be disappointed. I'm not a metal fan, but am attracted to the Mockingbird. The depth of tone isn't there on this one like it is on my NJ MB (this one is a bit thinner/lighter), but it's got a wide variety of edgy tones that will make sure it cuts through regardless of how much gain you use. The DD p'ups sound quite good for this purpose. I doubt they are all that much behind their MIA SD Distortion cousins. I was able to dial in the action reasonably "good" but not great. I'm more of a bluesy rock guy, but this guitar will have you reaching for the gain knob. It wants to go to 11

Also, the strap lock is on top of the upper horn, not behind the upper horn. Look at any video of GNR or VR with Slash playing that Mockingbird...that guitar has features that were made in the late 1970's and early 1980's

This guitar is NOT an exact replica of Slash's red Mockingbird. Slash's has a string bar on top of the strings on the headstock, reverse mounted base plate on the back of the neck for the locks and is NOT a flame or quilt top. I have a 2012 BC Rich Bich BGSTQTR; trans-red with the quadmatic bridge, Duncan Designed HB103 pickups, and a coffin case. Overall, I like the look and feel of it. Except, the quadmatic bridge sucks! I replaced it with a Schaller 456 with fine tuners. And, the HB103 pickups are useless. I want to replace them with some real Duncans; any Duncans will do! Or maybe some EMGs.

if you have one of these and are un happy or feel it is not getting the tone it should have clean all the dye off the fret board the ebony looks like it should have looked to begin with then polish the frets and treat the board this will change they way the guitar sounds it will open it up another thing i see all the time is cheap or improper cut nuts will ruin even the best guitars change them to a better made nut bone or graphite or have it done when bone is cut and polished right it wont bind the cleaning off the dye and a fret polish will make a big difference it did on mine then the bone nut i just installed topped it off now they sound like there supposed to sound i do this to all my guitars and basses as soon as i get them before i set them up polish the frets and clean the board smooth the saddles make sure the nut is cut right or replace it most of the time i replace it the nut is one of the most important if the the most important part of the guitar and a cheap or improper cut one will ruin a other wise great instrument
