Kimberly, great show and tips on preparing before a retreat. I am unable to attend overnight retreats because I am the sole caregiver for my disabled daughter but once a week a respite worker comes for 4 hours to be with her so I am able to go to the quilt shop to sit and sew. I do exactly what you do. I prep and pre-cut all my fabrics and organize projects in separate containers with everything I need to take with me. Keeps me organized and on track since my time is limited and precious I can just get down to sewing. Enjoy your retreat and I can’t wait to see everything that you get accomplished.
I also cut before going on retreat. Too many distractions to figure out what I'm doing . Recently went on one and had blocks already done beforehand (i.e, UFOs) so I was able to assemble 4 big tops)! It was a great sense of accomplishment that would have taken a couple of years to get around to. Such fun. Have a great time. Thanks for your descriptions and organizational tips.

Great video for getting organized. Kimberly - you know everyone loves that caddy for storing the triangles on a roll. It is the best way to store them and have them handy. Since you are sooo good at having items manufactured, why don't you have this caddy made? You make the Lori Hold metal book holders; I know you could make this too!! I would certainly buy this and stock up on all the triangles on a roll. I was so happy you made the little brush for cross stitch. I hope you will consider the caddy too!

I ALWAYS carry a bag with hand work in it. I keep it in the car. If I get caught waiting (kids, appointments) I work on knit, crochet, hexys. I even do quilt planner review if I need to. Your new crochet project would be great for that!
Wow! Kimberly I’m overwhelmed with your trip packing. Five days is a lot. That was my whole sewing room if I went that long. Lol! Hey, I hope you have a great trip and tell us how it went for you and if you got all your goals meant. I’ve never done anything like that so I didn’t have any idea so much would have to follow me. Great tips though. Love all your projects and I can see the need for organization.
I organize a lot like you do before going to a retreat other than starching. I am not a starcher. I made the Great Granny Square quilt this winter. After watching your video I think I will make the bonus quilt in the book. Thanks for sharing what you take to a retreat!

I’ve been to multiple quilt retreats, usually close enough to drive. After a couple of times a chair became an essential! I ended up buying The Bungee Chair from The Container Store to take to retreats. Works at home, but I have another at home that is heavier and not easy to take along. I highly recommend it. I have rarely had space for a full sized ironing board. Made an ironing surface out of a wooden folding “TV Tray”. It can double as a side table, easy to have close by. Also like the Quilter’s Cut and Press for an ironing surface and my Oliso travel iron. A few year ago I asked for a roll up heavy duty extension cord. It even has extra outlets on it. My family thought it was so funny that I loved that gift so much!I keep an extension cord strip with surge protector with my sewing machine case but sometimes I wish the cord was longer. Now I have options.
Just wanted to say a special thanks for the April Sew Sampler box co tents. I would love to have a tutorial to watch for the Buzz pattern and for the new QAL monthly project. I know it would have to be available for only Sew Sampler Members but it would be so special. Thanks for all you do and have fun on retreat!

Hi Kimberly, love the snail trail pattern, I recently ordered the 12” papers! Check again at the one you labeled mistake, it looks correct, and the other one in that fabric looks like the middle is off. Have fun at the retreat!
I love the idea of using the design boards to lay out all the squares. I think I need a few more design boards. Order when hubby out of town hehehe. I don’t need that many as I just counted mine 🙈. Super excited for the granny square cross stitch and quilt along. I need to find my book. Thanks for all the inspiration.
One thing I like to take is a wagon. So I can wheel my supplies in. I have a foldable one from Costco. It’s great and then I fold it and put it under the table. Or I get it up and use it as a shelf.

My car looks just like that except the places I go provide a large ironing board - I take along a TV tray converted personal ironing station! You work too much ! I am afraid for your health ! You people are sooooo lucky to have everything near your doorstep. I want to do the chicken quilt ad I had to buy material close to Lori's to do the quilts. I still don't know how I'm going to get the sew simple shapes here. My neighbours are leaving on Monday to America, only for a week and then go to Italy, so they won't be able to get the chicken sew simple shapes because your stock will only be available in June. Thank you for a fantastic video, I really enjoyed it! I wish you could be my neighbour!!
I pack as little as I can get away with for retreats. If the retreat location has an iron, I don’t pack mine - it’s a waste of space! I do a lot of pre work too. Most everything gets cut out so I can just sit down and sew once my spot is set up.

Kimberly, this is confusing. You said in the video that you should get 3.5 to 5 yards of 12037 Cayenne for J,K,L,M. Then you said you should have 6384 Coral for H and I. It appears in the book pattern that all of those should be cut from the same fabric. Also, when I ordered my fabric from FQS for the entire project with the book, they onnly sent me 1/2 yard of this Cayenne. I was ordering for the whole quilt so not sure why they did that. Then they also sent 1/2 yard of a brownish fabric with a little plus sign on it and I have no idea what that is for. I got the half yard of 1203 frosting for the binding. Then of course I got the bundle that I will use to make the squares. I hope you will advise on this.

Now, in the backseat of your car, do your seats fold down as two and one?? Leave the one up. Take your chair, turn it upside down and place the seat of your chair on the backseat. I would seriously call your friend and ask what the chairs are like at this place.
Thank you Fat Quarter shop for fantastic custoer service!! I got my coral and Cayenne fabric in just a couple of days and the lady that helped my on the phone was beyond patieint!! I have a question. Now that I am able to assemble blocks, do I press the seams to the side or open? It think I remember in some video the seams being pressed open, but in this video, Kimberly's seems look to be pressed to the side. It sure is easier to press to the side. Is it just me, or is it really fiddly to press seams open. Maybe I need a smaller iron.
Do not leave anything in your car of any value........ Even during the day this is not advised. Someone will break in and steal what you have. Check with retreat organizers they may be setting up ironing stations. I usually take mine and a tv tray iron board that I DIY'd, but 2 irons would be alot. Almost all of the retreats that I have attended have tables with ott lights, mug holders that attach to the table so as to avoid a spill. Every station has a nice clean garbage can with bags and they ask you to empty it nightly. Most of the centers (Motels) or homes that I stay at have lots of extra tools.....Cricuts for those who cross stitch, nice cutting stations for quilters, design walls for use and almost all of them have lots of room for your stuff and lock things up at night. When we first started going (15) or so years ago they asked what we would like to see and most places listened and made us happy. We loved going back and it was so relaxing. Hint we mostly stop for a brunch and supper. Having 3 meals a day was to much and then snacks of course a girl has to have her chocolate. I have never flown to a retreat here in Minnesota we have many in the immediate area within a hour or two. If you do fly I would pack just a carry on with something to do. We also have secret sisters and come bearing gifts. We play games and they usually involve a fat quarter to play. These are some of the notices we receive when we sign up and pay a deposit. Have fun it usually is a great time, gives us time to catch up with each other. I am sure if you Google retreat centers you will be able to find them in your area. We have a childrens camp here with... A frame cabins that hosts quilting groups in the winter time. They have a Chef from a really nice restaurant in town come and cook for us. This is included in the price and it is so reasonable. Enjoy.....

So if I understand Kimberly right by just cutting the fabrics according to the pattern and after the granny squares are set up you will have all that left over or is she cutting up each fat quarter all up? I am confused as to how you get all that left overs just by cutting as pattern says.
Any ideas on how to loosen the screws on the throat plate of the Juki. They are screwed in so tight that even my husband can't make them budge. I'm sure it needs cleaning in there.
Hi Kimberly, can you lay what time of day you sew during week and how you fit it in. For example do you in blocks of time or 15 min here and there? Or do you wait to sew at night? Are some days filled with more sewing time? More curious about time and what hours of day you get to sew.
I have the same Juki as you, how to you protect it while traveling with it? I know enough to have the needle down, but is there a protective case for it?
You may have these on your list but just in case …. Power cord, foot pedal, extension cord, glasses, a cup for water or coffee. (You wouldn’t believe how may times people forget their power cord. If you have room an extra sewing machine in case yours doesn’t work and the manual to your machine.
So many great thing!! I already own the granny book. Now on to the fabric!! I am wondering what is the pattern for the quilt behind you? I still consider myself a newbie and that quilt looks like I may be able to swing it! 😉❤️

I like the white in the crochet; it gives a bit of brightness.
For left handed crochet; I had my daughter-in-law sit in front of me so she was seeing more of a mirrored instruction. She picked it right up.
My Great Grandma taught me this way to embroider, so I sew upsidedown and back to front.

Thank you Fat Quarter shop for fantastic custoer service!! I got my coral and Cayenne fabric in just a couple of days and the lady that helped my on the phone was beyond patieint!! I have a question. Now that I am able to assemble blocks, do I press the seams to the side or open? It think I remember in some video the seams being pressed open, but in this video, Kimberly's seems look to be pressed to the side. It sure is easier to press to the side. Is it just me, or is it really fiddly to press seams open. Maybe I need a smaller iron.
Hello Marsha! We recommend pressing to one side. Pressing seams open is more difficult than pressing to one side.
Do not leave anything in your car of any value........ Even during the day this is not advised. Someone will break in and steal what you have. Check with retreat organizers they may be setting up ironing stations. I usually take mine and a tv tray iron board that I DIY'd, but 2 irons would be alot. Almost all of the retreats that I have attended have tables with ott lights, mug holders that attach to the table so as to avoid a spill. Every station has a nice clean garbage can with bags and they ask you to empty it nightly. Most of the centers (Motels) or homes that I stay at have lots of extra tools.....Cricuts for those who cross stitch, nice cutting stations for quilters, design walls for use and almost all of them have lots of room for your stuff and lock things up at night. When we first started going (15) or so years ago they asked what we would like to see and most places listened and made us happy. We loved going back and it was so relaxing. Hint we mostly stop for a brunch and supper. Having 3 meals a day was to much and then snacks of course a girl has to have her chocolate. I have never flown to a retreat here in Minnesota we have many in the immediate area within a hour or two. If you do fly I would pack just a carry on with something to do. We also have secret sisters and come bearing gifts. We play games and they usually involve a fat quarter to play. These are some of the notices we receive when we sign up and pay a deposit. Have fun it usually is a great time, gives us time to catch up with each other. I am sure if you Google retreat centers you will be able to find them in your area. We have a childrens camp here with... A frame cabins that hosts quilting groups in the winter time. They have a Chef from a really nice restaurant in town come and cook for us. This is included in the price and it is so reasonable. Enjoy.....

when I do the snail trail papers
I mark the paper on all the dark spots/ less chance of a mistake
So if I understand Kimberly right by just cutting the fabrics according to the pattern and after the granny squares are set up you will have all that left over or is she cutting up each fat quarter all up? I am confused as to how you get all that left overs just by cutting as pattern says.
Any ideas on how to loosen the screws on the throat plate of the Juki. They are screwed in so tight that even my husband can't make them budge. I'm sure it needs cleaning in there.
Hello Karen! You might have to take it to a shop where it can be service so they can take the plate off, because you may strip the screws .

Hi Kimberly, can you lay what time of day you sew during week and how you fit it in. For example do you in blocks of time or 15 min here and there? Or do you wait to sew at night? Are some days filled with more sewing time? More curious about time and what hours of day you get to sew.

I have the same Juki as you, how to you protect it while traveling with it? I know enough to have the needle down, but is there a protective case for it?

It look like the bottom yellow block wasn’t right on snail trail?
You may have these on your list but just in case …. Power cord, foot pedal, extension cord, glasses, a cup for water or coffee. (You wouldn’t believe how may times people forget their power cord. If you have room an extra sewing machine in case yours doesn’t work and the manual to your machine.
Love the idea of a crochet blanket to go with the quilt! Is Lori’s yarn really a chunky weight? It looks like worsted or sport weight.
