- Knebworth Festival, 30 June 1990. Knebworth Park, Knebworth, Hertfordshire, England.
During the execution of a guitar solo, Clapton broke the second string on the guitar. Without stopping he completed a solo with the five-string guitar and then changed it. While the assistants changed Eric Clapton's stratocaster, next solo was performed by Phil Palmer.
On stage:
Eric Clapton - Vocals, Guitar
Nathan East - Bass
Steve Ferone - Drums
Ray Cooper - Percussion
Phil Palmer - Guitar
Alan Clark - Keyboards
Greg Phillinganes - Keyboards
Katie Kisson - Backing Vocals
Tessa Niles - Backing Vocals
Palmer's solo perfectly illustrates the concept of 'less is more'. The opening held notes of his solo are just right. Clapton must have enjoyed that too.
too right I'd love the tab to it
Phil's solo blew me away in 1990 and to this day I'm so grateful Clapton broke that string otherwise we might never of heard it, I even went as far a ripping it off a few years ago for a Jazz n' Blues festival it was great to play but not quite Phil
So agree with you guys ! I was amazed by Palmer’s solo after that “Take it Phil”
I saw Palmer two times with Dire Straits without even be able to hear a sound of him...
Phil's playing and tone is sublime in his solo
@@TheDunateen77 I wonder what distortion, chorus and amp he was using
Phil Palmers solo sounded awesome to me when I was 12, still sounds amazing at 35!!!
yessss, perfectly delivered I thought!
It's divine.
he is a god of guitar too
What about at 41 ?
Those 1990 Clapton strats are the best ever produced. Lord knows what the soldano heads are worth now
Phil rocks in that red strat, awesome!!
Nice to hear Palmer do a solo on this song!
Yes and he plays a good bit of lead guitar licks on Tearing Us Apart as well, at this same show
The wind was Eric's friend that day!
Mr. Cool! 😎
Classic blues/rock, classic stratocaster guitars. Great players.... I LOVE IT.
8yrs later still listening to this masterpiece 💪
amazing the way he makes the sound of his string breaking sound like part of the solo awesome
that was just luck.. but it sounds cool ! :)
Yes! 2:01
Clapton's tone on this gig was pure fire! Miss that pewter strat
I think he still play those pewter strats (he has had many of them). What made his sound so great back in 90 - 91 was that they had Fender Lace Sensors on his strats, and his amps were Soldano Racks. The Pickups he is now using is Fender Vintage Noiseless. His guitars now and then has this 25db mid boost circuit that are there to emulate tones of a Les Paul. I agree with you that his is Clapton at his peak and he never sounded better than this era. I think it has to do with the new pickups and amps he is using nowdays.
@@blueshadow7385 I loved that sound too. That Soldano SLO-100 (the 2nd was a spare) plus an almighty rack of various bits 'n' pieces. The whole lot was sold as one a few years ago. I liked those Strats with the LS fitted too. There's two in this video - the flame neck and the birdseye neck. The flame neck ended up on the black Strat from Oct 1990. Both of those were sold off too :(
Saying all that I did love his tone at the Cream 2005 RAH gigs which was VN pups and a (modified) Twin.
But the SLO years will always be a fave.
It was the power of those Hi-Gain Soldano amps that really made that Strat sing! Check out 24 Nights and you’ll hear that fantastic tone.
Eric is in total command of this concert! All of the other headliners want him too sit in and add too the songs with his soft blues renditions. Losing a string happens more often than you think! He's got another guitar ready too go while Phil takes over in-between
Great solo and sound from Phil
he is so soulful, that melody in singing and guitar solo. Born with a feel
I bet the entire guitar could have fallen apart and he still would produce an awesome sound.
Exactly..Eric Clapton,
a genious 🎼🎼🎼
These where the top years of Clapton.......his playing and sound.
I have loved Phil Palmer’s creamy lead tone ever since I first heard him play. It is almost a country rock tone that suits every genre.
it's more crispy than creamy for me
@@TedBoyRomarino I can hear that. If you listen to any lead work he does in the dire straits shows in ‘93, it is awesome
@@adamdrummer1991 I've listened to that soooo many times 🤣 my parents went crazy
With a broken string and all! Great Eric Clapton!
I agree, Phil on that strat....gotta keep watching it. Awesome this though right through.
I was there, it was a unique thing to see all your guitar idols and all in one day.
Page, Clapton, Gilmour and Knopfler.
Always wanted to see a better quality version of this clip, thank you.
Clapton’s best era of tone outside of Cream, which also includes the RAH 24 Nights concert, and the concert at the Staples center in LA!
Came from the Anderton's interview with Phil, Loved it(both)
3:04 "Take it Phil"
This performance are perfect!
Of course, friend!
Amazing rendition of this blues classic by Eric & his superb band… Phil Palmer’s solo is a perfect counterpoint to Eric’s previous tour de force. The bassist really seems to be digging the music here!
Awesome! What a legend👏
When you are a master and have experience can handle situations like that easy.
El rey del blues como siempre, excelente!!!
I remember watching this when it was on tv
EXCELENTE CÁNCION 1 SUPER CLÁSICO DEL BUEN ERICK CLAPTON.
thank you Phil
Such a boss.
Cool under pressure ... luv it
Szuper zene,imadom Claptont!
Phil from, Wings of Pegasus, just did a vid about this very song and he had Phil Palmer on to talk about that moment. Some cool insights from Mr Palmer and what he was thinking. Good stuff
Talento en estado puro!
Jesus... not only could I not stop laughing at the words to the song I couldn't help but jump up and dance! Killer song..off the chain.

Saludos, Alexandre, desde Xochimilco, México.
Clapton breaks a string and lets Phil take over the second solo. Wish they had old love video. Clapton was on fire. I was About 50 feet back on the right of center
Wow! I would give anything to hear that 💥

This is why learning theory is important, theory IS your backup!
Theory is music. Ever since I started learning the theory of music my bass lines and fills have become so much better!
What are you on about? Knowing theory had nothing to do with it. Eric handed it to Phil because he couldn't finish the song without that string.
amazing!!!
I LOOOOVE IT...❤️❤️❤️❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥☺️
Ele bravo sto Clapton!!
Fkin epic !
Killing it like a boss in a pink suit.
proper fucking quality
That guitarist must be greatful to the broken string of Clapton
1❤ love of my life😊❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
clapton is god
Wish this show was on CD in high quality.
At 4:33 Clapton played on another Stratocaster. See Guitar strap from beginning video and after 4:00.
His string snapped on ther first one
so cool. must be hard running those scales with one string missing without missing a note.
never missed a lick!
Phil, you're the one!
Same colored Stratocaster was ready ?
Good job for assistants and Phil Palmer ! ............ also for Clapton.
Abe Lotus his back up Stratocaster must be the same color from Fender, I think it was his signature model ?
The world is crazy! Only 1000 likes! For such musterpiece! People! wake up!
Well, the Knebworth concerts have benefited the Nordon-Robbins foundation that gives music therapy to people with various disabilities and ailments, ranging from cancer, dementia, Alzheimer's to hearing impairment, visual impariment, autism and more. Due to the success of this 1990 concert, the Nordon-Robbins foundation was able to build a larger and specialized building to help more people.
Eric Clapton was a young Eddie Van Halen's main inspiration.
I love old school music (40's~90's) music nowadays is just absolute garbage ._.
There's more variety today than ever before. If you are into that classic rock sound, check out The Sheepdogs, or The Black Keys.
I'd say lil Wayne is good too
There is some amazing music being created today. You just won't find it on mainstream radio or pop stations.
Wow. Leisure suits and baggy trousers ? what a mode that was ! lol
Rory Gallagher could change strings while playing, a sight to see
And bb too
Ain’t got shit on Clapton
Rory wasn't Human
I saw EC decade ago and he broke a string .. he waved off the tech on the side and just kept playing to the end of the song
Tessa Niles......yes please......
EC is mega cool
Probably gave that solo to Phil, guitar came on stage and set him up with another guitar to finish out the song. Would explain the last solo he did. Someone on this thread said there was 6 strings at 4:33, this may explain why.
look at for the 2nd strap guitar: there are different colors... ;)
His string snapped on the
first.
Still awesome 1:59
One
of the most Important thoughts we can think, first inside myself, then
after that, you can think of how others came to Be?
Challenging the Thoughtsystems in each others, and after that, maybe we can Inspire each others to Think Higher Together
I Think Clapton and Fender is perfect match
Does anyone know how he says in tune? Normally with a strat that should mess with all tension on all the other strings?
The trem bridge is blocked on his.
Thanks
I couldn’t hear one note over that suit!
Phil’s book brought me here .
That was Phil palmers audition for dire straits
That bill is pretty good.
You might be cool .. but you'll never be Eric Clapton in a pink Armani suit at Knebworth cool
The blond backup vocalist is Tessa Niles
BINGOOOOOOO....Dawm I fell in love with That beautiful MILF
brightmanfan Who's the fine azz black back up vocalist? ; . )
SouthernPrinceKenny She's Katie Kissoon, Trinidad Tobago
He is in dreamland, on autopilot. He is not even looking at the guitar (his eyes seem to be closed) ... knowing exactly what is happening and what will happen next. The string-snap shakes him out of it; he is required to modify his his focus, look at his hand and direct his attention to the culprit ... it's funny.
Phil Palmer Stole this tune! Owwwww!
Who is on keyboard?
Taking a look at myself ✝️✝️✝️🙏not aiming at anyone
kudos to eric! broke a string in the middle of a solo and in the wind, but never missed a beat or a note!! total pro ; though i don't like his tone on this song too much of that flange effect palmer 's tone was better
This look reminds me of the Bee Gees
Windy much?!?
Where John Mayer got it from
First there is no whammy bar on that strat play on with that and break a string and tell me about it
1:58 aw
Keith Richards always played with a 5 string
Most of the time Keith Richards doesn't know what he's playing with!
yea. played with out the 6 string , the first is more must important for the blues
Not bad. but John Fogerty's version on Cosmos Factory is more pure rock 'n roll!
Nicolas Cage bad af on guitar
Phil Palmer is as good as Eric Clapton but under rated..
good job he has blocked of trem
01:59
2:00
se puso nervioso cuando cortó cuerda :P
not saying he not a great guitar player
1:59
B0B!!!
That prolonged analysis of Phil’s solo was so boring
houuuuus
CLAPTON CARRIES A NILEECECUBE FOR GOOD LUCK.
