Autogefühl dear Thomas can we get updates on the tcr because it has not released in United States
I think GTI/R models look lovely in white. The GTI red accent especially pops with such a colour!
So much so that I’ve just ordered an R in white-silver metallic.
mine is gold/turmeric yellow, and the glossy blacks suit well on it
Picked up my used 7.5 GTI in Black Ruben last week. At first was a little unsure about the colour but now I love it. Rarely see any in that colour.
Golf in a big way followed the Porsche 911 route in basically evolving the car with every iteration, just stick with a proven formula and that is why it's the benchmark. Nothing really wrong with that. Good thing when the competition nails or even betters the formula, we'll probably expect Volkswagen to offer budget/discount deals. So it's a win for consumers.
Fine review Thomas, hope to see you introduce/drive the new Rolls Royce Cullinan sometime.

Very nice review again Thomas! And yes you are right, i have a clubsport gti with the alcantara steering wheel, and you can drive that car very relaxed... That TCR gti is like my clubsport, in boost it also has 290 hp. Im a Golf GTI lover from the first hour :)

Really good review. Has helped me confirm my decision to stay with the Mark 7 GTI before the model changes. Good deals currently available to trade in; my current GTI purchased early in 2014 will be exchanged tomorrow for a new one. My only regret is that my manual gearbox will be exchanged for the automatic version (manual no longer available on Mark 7 version) and the Alcantara/interlagos seats will be changed for the "Clark" material version. For me the version 7 Golf GTI has been the best car I have ever owned.

+1. .. Black Ruby Metallic is a current S-Class color too. .. Striking if ya go for a darker color pallet. .. Make my GTI (owned several in the early model years; '83, '86 and '89) a silver metallic something; understated. .. Herr Thomas and crew - a thorough, entertaining review as always. .. Autogefühl is the very best. Check out the enthusiasm at 13:25 .. "Yeah, that's the stuff" ... Too funny.

Great review Thomas, specially the autobahn instant acceleration on third gear. The golf GTi has over the years has become nicer, sleeker, a lot quieter, comfortable and subjectively better looker. The basic design to the golf hasn’t change specially the C pillar and now there are two more GTi models TCR and the performances to choose from why? Because of one car, the Hyundai i30N which has 275hp with mechanical LSD and it is raw. It is also cheaper and fun to drive. The rawness was the signature to the golf GTi decades ago with rally inspired by having the exhaust popping sound with rev matching with your toe and heel for every down change. The i30N is the car to beat but, the golf is premium in every way and hopefully the TCR will bring the fun back for every drive.

Thanks Thomas for your in-depth review as always. But vw is my favourite brand i have owned. I still love my golf altrack. I love the extra room and styling. I just think they should of added slightly more power because of the size difference at least.

Beautiful. Very true about for what we love Golfs.
I have said it before, Thomas’ reviews are second to none. Perfectly informed and to the point but with brilliant delivery and charisma. This colour is an interesting one that I have seen in person, but a GTi has to be in Tornado red and I really like those ‘tornado’ alloys.

Was frustrated at first and then noticed how totally at home I felt in the car. And the engine noise was lovely. Great compromise between everyday and responsible racing for me.
(Re. the seats: My test car had the leather seats and as a small person I found the bottom bit a fraction too long - fabric was fine, though.)

@@autogefuehl Thanks! I much prefer fabric anyway (as you often say, much better in winter or summer) but I had not really thought about the cruelty to animals aspect until you mentioned it in your videos... Now definitely won't have leather if it can be avoided.
I bought a new i30N Performance a couple of months ago. I had considered the Golf GTI as well, but ultimately, it was way too expensive. Nice review, but still waiting for a review of the i30N Performance because it's more than a match for the Golf GTI...

Great liitle sporty car! Great outside design,great interior quality ,but hey Thomas can you get the GTI with a dual clutch automatik or not? I would prefer an automatik because it's a bit more relaxing to me.Anyway ,great review as always Thomas,keep it up !
Yes you can get all GTIs with manual or DSG
Great video Thomas, love that dark red color on that GTI! Also VW, please stop with the top hinged gas pedal, you have ruined driving comfort for many people changing from the nice bottom hinged (like BMW), to this old version... WHY? I see no benefit in making this change.
I miss the GTI performance pkg brakes, the seats, the exhaust note and the short steering rack.

Interesting addition to the range but the Golf performance range confuses me to the point that it makes me wonder what the thinking behind each new iteration is. We've had the standard GTI, the GTI performance pack, the Clubsport, Clubsport S and now the TCR and the differences seem to be mainly hardware, ecu and styling except for the S. I prefer the styling and the easier to understand range of the Leon Cupra which is why i'd go for one over a GTI. I must admit though the GTI brand is cool.

When the Volkswagen car get's in your blood long enough it becomes part of a car enthusiasts DNA. .. So true. .. Everyone has a 1st Volkswagen . . . For me and a brother it was a hand-me-down 1965 sunroof Beetle from neighbor Old Man Winslow. .. It was the late '70's we were both learning to drive and work on the V'dub. .. A couple of years on and the Beetle would go off to college with me; skis out the window. .. The many road trips bwt NJ/NY and Colorado have fond memories. .. The VW spokesperson tell's it like it is. . . . .

Eurowheels It is always like that. Euro and Chinese spec models are better compared to US. I don't know why?
I mean I understand for safety reasons why they have to be different. But this GTI is a whole another car. The tailights get the Audi like tailights, it sounds better, it gets the digital cockpit etc. And whenever you ask VW they just say market research shows that Americans don’t care about (insert feature) Well I know many Americans including myself who do.
Also "way" more expensive. Comparably equipped Autobahn trim in Germany runs about $54,000.
Stephen Hendricks yeah people in the USA would laugh at a Golf let alone any VW for that price.

I'm always confused between the two Golfs... R & GTI I don't know which one I should go for.... since I'm always In love between the two. Greetings from Namibia Windhoek.
In Namibia you can live with GTI. You will never be disappointed. In real life it is all u need unless u live in 8 inch snow covered areas.

Hello!
I had the same issue as you, specially leaving in a area with snow (Switzerland).
Besides the Obvious, Golf GTI is funnier to drive than a Golf R (unless you like to make good drift in snow). Is a little more unpredictable than Golf R and it give more emotions. Golf R is a heavier car with more with power BUT is much more predictable when driving.
So, my choice was the GTI. I saved money (which i can use it for a lot of gas and maintenance) and it can put a smile in your face easily. And it make more sense to make a GTI a daily car than a Golf R.
In resume you SHOULD try them and the choice generally depends on your personality and style.

Tough question. If i lived in a snowy surrounding, golf r awd would help. If not, consider the gti is 10k less expensive and the engine remains the same displacement, just tuned to more hp. Also, long term motorway the roaring sound of the R can be annoying. My choice: base GTI in Thomas blue with DSG, clubsport S alcantara steering wheel if available :) and rim choice is important: max stay with 18, 19 gets too bumpy. So 17 or 18

Arjen Kroos gti. The golf r is faster and more fun, but as for fun per $, the gti has better value. Unless you live in a snowy or Icy area, in which case the golf Rs all wheel drive will be worth it.
What about the Clubsport?! It´s still faster around track. And lighter. And got real bucket seats. Cheers

With this TCR we are in the same range of the R, it’s either they will be bringing a more extreme R as well or there is something wrong in the offering, GTI & R same power and the TCR is sportier and maybe faster than the R because of the weight reduction and parts used from the racing cars, there is something that is not making sense.
The R will remain more expensive and with AWD. And it will still be faster in acceleration because of the grip
The TCR might be faster in laptime depending on the situation, see our interview with benny leuchter about this in the video!!
I saw the whole review but am not too convinced.the R will remain more expensive just because of the AWD on the other hand the TCR you get a sportier look like the exhaust, the alcantara, the racing parts, for a cheaper price. I honestly still think they should be bringing a more extreme R that can beat even faster hatches from competition and is faster than a TCR

Golf R is only better from standing start, R is heavier and understeers, GTI more fun and from rolling start GTI Performance not much in it especially if ya tune it.

Question from one of your US viewers - I've heard Europeans say the Golf/GTI is a quite reliable car, yet in the US the engine has a poor reputation for reliability. What is your take on this difference, especially with this latest generation of TSI ?

Toyota was faster on the on ramp, later Thomas reached 118 Khm - but I was asleep so we only have the van driver as a witness and he was dozing off as it was a boring day

I drove both myself on different days and at different places and the BMW felt so much nicer. That straight six cylinder...
