I worked at a college student union food court in the early 1990s. The lead cook where I worked would occasionally put this CD on. It was hilarious watching people flee in terror as soon as they came in to the sound radius of our station area. Which was great because it kept us from getting busy at those times. Also we had fun mimicking the lead singer's puking singing style. Great times!

I heard this album when I was 15 and all my friends were like "this is the most evil band of all time, just read these lyrics" and whilst I thought the music really sounded quite evil I thought that they must have a bit tongue-in-cheek attitude. And of course later it turned out to be true. I remember hearing an interview with Glen Benton where he said he tried to help an old woman across the street but she started hitting him with her purse when she noticed the inverted cross burned on his forehead. Years later I saw Glen wearing a Cheaters (the absolutely hilarious reality TV show) T-shirt and it kinda affirmed that he's not the spawn of satan. They were just doing the same thing as Venom a decade before. But I still love the debut album, just crushing.

  • @AlucardsQuest

Deicide was more about the chugging evil riffs, I still dig most of the music (especially Legion). Although they were the most brutal "satanic" band you could get for their first couple albums, they never really challenged themselves musically like Morbid or Cannibal. Obituary didn't either, but somehow people respected Obituary more than Deicide. I think it might have been the satanic thing, which most people would be the first to tell you that satan is an invention of christianity. So for them to embrace a cartoony version of it without practicing LaVey or anything... nobody took them seriously. Plus the lead vocalist had some childish beef with the editor of Metal Maniacs magazine and a Christian radio host for years. I saw a interview with him recently, and honestly I was shocked at how chill he was. My friend said he saw of show of theirs, and the vocalist just gave him the stink eye when he asked how he was doing. They got a second wind when they replaced their old guitarists with a Cannibal Corpse guy and a guy who filled in on a Death and Iced Earth tour. Nowadays it seems like they keep trying to recapture what fans liked about Legion, despite the band never liking the album themselves... but they deserve mention in the pantheons of the Florida Death Metal scene (which apparently only revolved around Morrisound Studios?).

What do I think of the song Dead by Dawn? Classic What do I think of Deicide the album? Classic. The best Deicide album? Legion.
Your take of this song and it's production is your opinion, but I will say you seem to like a more technical approach to death metal which I highly recommend Legion. Deicide have always been a very stripped down and raw band. It's part of the appeal. The production I think is awesome. Back when this album was made there was only one guy who could get double bass mixed with the other instruments without it sounding muddy and that is Scott Burns. The album sounds great to me. This was also the first Deicide album I bought in 1992 when I got into death metal. Try Legion if you are looking for a more technical less stripped down version of Deicide.

FINALLY a true fan who loves all of their albums just like me. I LOVE DEICIDE \m/ I hate when people say their only good albums are their first 3 albums. I fucking hate it. Nearly all of their albums are fucking AMAZING masterpieces of pure uncompromisingly brutal Death Metal. Show some respect to one of the most legendary DM bands of all time

You can definetly hear the Morrissound Studios. But if I had to pick songs from Deicide I would chose tracks from the Legion album. Better songwriting, better songstructure.
Deicide didnt have the biggest impact on the scene. Their singer was a little to crazy back then (he had a branded upturned cross on his forehead).

old deicide is awesome im ok with the sound everything doesnt need to be over polished like alot of new crap fake death metal and you actually have heard glen benton sing before he was on vomit the soul on cannibal corpse butchered at birth deicide, cannibal corpse, morbid angel, old malevolent creation, death, immolation, obituary, and unleashed are bands i started with so deicide is very important to death metal
