Morbid angel did what Deicide wanted to do, but better (The antireligious, uber cheesy lyrics) Musicwise, Deicide is kinda mid, but Steve Asheim is a beast on the drums
You have to watch and understand the Evil Dead movies to appreciate the background growls here as well as the chorus chant. Both are direct references to the films.
I worked at a college student union food court in the early 1990s. The lead cook where I worked would occasionally put this CD on. It was hilarious watching people flee in terror as soon as they came in to the sound radius of our station area. Which was great because it kept us from getting busy at those times. Also we had fun mimicking the lead singer's puking singing style. Great times!
Start with the first album!! I was 15 when the debut album came out. Popped that cassette in for the first time while on a plane ride. Shit was so evil I was afraid some pissy demon might swing thru & take the plane out so I waited til I got home for the rest of it. First two albums are legendary bangers through & through.
Deicide we're unique, whether you liked his vocals or not. They were tight, original and the drummer was a machine. Trey Of Morbid Angel turned me onto Deicide when my band used to hang out with them when they lived in North Carolina.
I love Deicide. Glenn’s voice gets even better after this release, he’s already amazing off this one. I love Serpent of the Light and Scars of the Crucifix.
@@JacobsKrąnųg Really?! Glenn is like THE death metal vocalist for me. Like when someone asks what death metal sounds like I would say Glenn Benton. He's one of the best in my opinion. Very powerful, clean, and understandable.
Deicide's legacy for the genre can't be denied. Not an opinion, but a fact. Once Upon the Cross is, and will always be one the best death metal albums ever made 🤘
You absolutely need to to listen to their Once Upon the Cross album. Its when they some how magically became pro and found a signature sound. Its a complete masterpiece and the one after is called Serpents of the Light is equally a masterpiece. But once upon the cross has unexplainable vibes.
Does anyone remember Glenn Benton vs. Bob Larson? Those were the days. Deicide are OGs of death metal. No one was this extreme, Glenn burned an inverted cross in his foreheard!
Legion and Once Upon The Cross is pinnacle Deicide... pinnacle death metal IMO. They were probably the most extreme band in the early 90s and I wish I was old enough to have attended a show back then in their prime. Fuckin' mayhem. Glenn's voice is so distinct and aggressive. In this genre he has a more natural style and tone in his voice. His best vocal performance is probably Serpents of the Light.
The first 4 albums are some of the best death metal out there, especially the first 2. I think you would really enjoy Once Upon The Cross as well, but Legion is my personal favorite, and the first Deicide album isn't far behind for me.
People have probably already mentioned, but the vocalist Glen Benton was in another band Vital Remains. It's basically deicide but with higher production and more flavorful and classical solos, and a much bigger emphasis on the drums
When this came out, I don’t think anyone was doing what they were doing. Still enjoy this album and Legion. Not my favorite death metal, but do enjoy it.
Deicide’s first album is absolutely a classic of the Tampa Florida death metal scene. 2nd album Legion is my favorite death metal album of all time. i was a sophomore in high school when it came out in 1992 and it shocked the metal world no doubt.
I heard this album when I was 15 and all my friends were like "this is the most evil band of all time, just read these lyrics" and whilst I thought the music really sounded quite evil I thought that they must have a bit tongue-in-cheek attitude. And of course later it turned out to be true. I remember hearing an interview with Glen Benton where he said he tried to help an old woman across the street but she started hitting him with her purse when she noticed the inverted cross burned on his forehead. Years later I saw Glen wearing a Cheaters (the absolutely hilarious reality TV show) T-shirt and it kinda affirmed that he's not the spawn of satan. They were just doing the same thing as Venom a decade before. But I still love the debut album, just crushing.
The "Dead by Dawn! Dead by Dawn! Dead by Dawn!" refrain is superfluous at best; potentially marring perhaps one of the greatest DM songs, in my opinion.
That's the good choice :) Legion is the better first impression in my opinion. Beyond it, Decide has a few decent albums, plenty of meh, all kinda repetitive. But there are a handful of really solid DM songs!
ok, after Deicide you need to also do Vital Remains... Dechristianize would be the obvious choice, but also Hammer Down The Nails, Icon Of Evil.... oh and while we are at it, Vitriol are also pretty cool, they sort of are the modern Vital Remains to me.
Deicide was more about the chugging evil riffs, I still dig most of the music (especially Legion). Although they were the most brutal "satanic" band you could get for their first couple albums, they never really challenged themselves musically like Morbid or Cannibal. Obituary didn't either, but somehow people respected Obituary more than Deicide. I think it might have been the satanic thing, which most people would be the first to tell you that satan is an invention of christianity. So for them to embrace a cartoony version of it without practicing LaVey or anything... nobody took them seriously. Plus the lead vocalist had some childish beef with the editor of Metal Maniacs magazine and a Christian radio host for years. I saw a interview with him recently, and honestly I was shocked at how chill he was. My friend said he saw of show of theirs, and the vocalist just gave him the stink eye when he asked how he was doing. They got a second wind when they replaced their old guitarists with a Cannibal Corpse guy and a guy who filled in on a Death and Iced Earth tour. Nowadays it seems like they keep trying to recapture what fans liked about Legion, despite the band never liking the album themselves... but they deserve mention in the pantheons of the Florida Death Metal scene (which apparently only revolved around Morrisound Studios?).
2nd album Legion is far better in my opinion in terms of musicianship and overall songwriting but the debut will always have a special place in my heart as I heard it when I was 16
This is one of the cornerstones of deathmetal. Deicide is pretty much the same when ever you listen to them even thought the early albums are better and not so predictable.
Outside of Slayer , These guys are my favourite band. They just get better They dropped the extra growls later on and it on ly made Glens voice sound better!
The story of The Mad Arab and his living dreams and the Necronomicon came long before Evil Dead Dead By Dawn. Benton said that he hadn't even seen Evil Dead. The story of The Mad Arab was out long before any of this.
Yeah um! everything in the song is direct references to the movie, yes the necronomican existed before but this song is all evil dead if he claims he never saw it he’s full of shit 😂 castle of cantar the chosen one, dead by dawn chanted (that was even the subtitle of the movie ffs)
I’ve read every lovecraft story multiple times for many years. Which is how I know Glen Benton is lying if he says it’s based on that and not the movie. None of the references in The song have anything to do with the Necronomicon of the lovecraft tales or the original Eygyptian necronomicans. Morbid Angel were far more lovecraft inspired.

Serpents Of The Light is one of the best DEICIDE albums, much more interesting than Once Upon The Cross to my ears, even with the thinner guitar tone.
