Yep, I'm originally from the Pacific Northwest, and my dad was from the deep south. He introduced us to grits, first with LOTS of butter then he thought since we were northerners, we would prefer sugar and milk. I liked neither. The only way I'll eat grits is if they're whipped with cheese and a touch of jalapeno.
Sugar grits are definitely a northern thing. My dad’s side is from Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina and they all do cheese grits or salt and pepper w/ fried fish. My mom’s side is from Ohio and Michigan and they all do sugar and butter sometimes with sausage or bacon. I love both equally but grew up with my mom so sugar grits have a special place in my heart.

Pulled pork sandwiches in my house were a staple. But it was cooked fully in the juice/broth/sauce. And what me and my dad would do. Was we would put the pork in a bowl and mix into it mayo and mustard, and then I’d put cole slaw on the bun with it. SO GOOD

And my Momma always made something called a “Dump cake” So you take a can of peaches in heavy syrup then a can of pineapple chunks, put yellow cake mix over the top with slaps of butter bake it at 350 until the butter is melted and the cake mix is golden brown. Eat it with some home made whip cream and oooh man it’s really good!!

i didn’t grow up in the south but i’m so glad the rest of my family is from virginia and south carolina bc i have been given the god-sent opportunity to have grown up with all of these foods and i feel like i can relate to these two so much

This is an older video I'm rewatching...but watching it again made me want all my mama's old recipes! She was from Southern Kentucky...Ages to be exact and my dad was from Harlan. Her buttermilk drop biscuits couldn't be beat...her cherry cheesecake...my dad's poor mans soup but if you want any of the stew meat get to it before him because that man would pick out all the meat when he got his bowl lol. Her potato candy....chocolate fudge from scratch. She's sit at the electric skillet for hours just stirring. Best part was getting to be the taste tester when she did the softball test. I let me son do that now when I make it. I could go on with things my mom used to make but I won't haha.

i didn’t grow up in the south but i’m so glad the rest of my family is from virginia and south carolina bc i have been given the god-sent opportunity to have grown up with all of these foods and i feel like i can relate to these two so much

This is an older video I'm rewatching...but watching it again made me want all my mama's old recipes! She was from Southern Kentucky...Ages to be exact and my dad was from Harlan. Her buttermilk drop biscuits couldn't be beat...her cherry cheesecake...my dad's poor mans soup but if you want any of the stew meat get to it before him because that man would pick out all the meat when he got his bowl lol. Her potato candy....chocolate fudge from scratch. She's sit at the electric skillet for hours just stirring. Best part was getting to be the taste tester when she did the softball test. I let me son do that now when I make it. I could go on with things my mom used to make but I won't haha.
Grits are ground corn. I am from the south but I do eat those yankee grits with butter and sugar! I get grief about it all the time.

Smoking the Full hog over the fire is more like a North Carolina thing. I love chick fil a so much that every Sunday feels a little bit of empty. Pulled pork sandwich and banana pudding, guys if you ever visit Knoxville, TN, go check the Sweet P’s barbecue, hands down one of the best BBQ restaurants in town!
Jenny Town South Carolina also smokes the entire hog. I’ve been to many relatives homes here in SC where they have a fire pit for the hog.
