Maya Dolas, born Mahindra Dolas on October 15, 1966, was a notorious gangster in Mumbai during the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was an integral part of the D-Company, a criminal organization led by the infamous underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. Dolas gained notoriety for his involvement in numerous criminal activities, including extortion, contract killings, and smuggling.
Dolas' criminal career was marked by his audacity and ruthlessness. He quickly rose through the ranks of the underworld due to his fearless nature and effectiveness in executing assignments. His life and criminal exploits were dramatically brought to an end during a significant police encounter on November 16, 1991. This operation, led by the Mumbai Police, took place in the Lokhandwala Complex, a posh area in Mumbai, and resulted in a fierce gun battle that lasted several hours. The incident is famously known as the Lokhandwala Complex shootout.
The shootout at Lokhandwala was a turning point in the fight against organized crime in Mumbai. It highlighted the increasing boldness of gangsters and the subsequent need for robust police action. Dolas and his associates were heavily armed, and their confrontation with the police was intense and deadly. The encounter led to Dolas' death, along with several of his associates.
Maya Dolas' life and the Lokhandwala shootout were later immortalized in popular culture, most notably in the 2007 Bollywood film "Shootout at Lokhandwala," where his character was portrayed by Vivek Oberoi. This film brought his story to a wider audience, highlighting the gritty realities of Mumbai's underworld during that era.
