I took a tour around the Yiwu Industrial Trade City - the largest wholesale market in the world. People come here from every country to buy goods to export. 5.5 million square meters, 7km long, this market is beyond giant. And it's all one interconnected building. I explored it for a day with Collin Abroadcast, a fellow market fanatic. From Christmas decorations to children's toys to hardware and tools, we found a bunch of stuff that blew our minds.

When I was in collage, I once doing a translation work for the buyer from North Europe, and they want to buy some scarf. I was like ,ok ,North Europe, Rich, will be easy, cause they will not buy too cheap things. Cheap things is very annoying to check the quality by the way.And they tell me they want to buy some good quality with reasonable price.I was still a young man who want to do my job perfect at that time, so I find my friend who has a cousin own a factory which famous for their stable quality ,and the factory give me a very good price.
Then I send the sample and my price, but the Euro guy reply said quality is ok, but the price is too high. It is 14RMB each piece, for the quality it is very cheap. So I said this is my lowest price,if you want a lower one, it may have to drop the quality, and the Euro guys said OK,send me a sample. So I send a sample with lower quality and lower price, still not happy.A few round later, he finally agree to buy 4000pieces, in 7RMB.But to be truth, If I am the customer I will not buy that scarf even it is 7Rmb, I can not say it is GOOD quality, but he is the buyer, and he seems satisfied with the quality.
So 1 years later, I was be told that the scarf I sold to him,in Europe is 14EU each! 10 times of price. So next time when you guys blame times's poor quality which Made in China, blame the dealer.Cause they are the guys who make the orders.
Stir_fryCook_oo7 college and wow what a weird rant
@@mooselove Why is that weird? Some people have this bad image of china in terms of the quality of products they produce when the Chinese are perfectly capable of making quality products, it's because of businesspeople who rather sell low quality overpriced products then good quality products. Imo neither side is really wrong, except for the businesses that exploit sweatshops. I feel like Stif_fryCook_oo7 was trying to explain that with his anecdote.
@@kittycatcuties "North Europe"?
Sadly, A 10 times production price is not unusual. On other I know someone working with Electronics, and cursing over Chinese products don't live up to safefty standards. Only companies with Chinese workers, don't have these issues.
Sounds like a lot of ads I see on Instagram. Right away I’m like that’s a product I can buy for $2 on AliExpress and you’re selling it for $19.95. 😜 And it’s not even good quality.
You know its a big building when it's divided into 'districts'. Not even 'zones', 'blocks' or 'areas'
Someone needs to do a proper documentary series on Yiwu. Some of those designs have been in circulation for decades. I recognise them from my childhood. So much of the world’s material culture must be tied up in that place.
No no no. many of these things actually come from Europe. The one Belt one Road opened. The train from London to Yiwu was opened last year. So it's actually the world's product
梁浩 This is equally or perhaps more interesting: where the designs originate. My partner noticed for example there was a collection of pig figurines with Russian blessings. This has no cultural significance to the Russians. So are they Chinese new year pigs for Russians? Are they Chinese or Russian designs? Are they importing or exporting and to where? Do they have the rest of the Zodiac or carry other languages?
madhaha my entire life has been one big Chinese fantasy disguised as SEARS, WALMARTZ, and thrift store lies...😐😣
One Belt one Road infrastructure linking Europe Asia Africa three continents. In the future, North America and South America will also be linked. So European products can be easily transported to Yiwu, and many products you see in Yiwu come from Europe. You can search on the UA-cam, one Belt one Road.
Have you seen the "exhibition and trade centre of African products" in the end? It's all about "made in Africa" things. This place is so big, that not only buyers all over the world come here to buy things, but also the sellers and producers come here to sell things.
Why are there no wedding dresses? Because the wedding dress is in Huqiu District, Suzhou City, China, where a whole street is a shop selling and customizing wedding dresses.😉
The guy meant white dresses. I think those are custom made and therefore can not be sold in bulk. Also, the designer ones are not all made in china.
So basically this market is like one big ass Market City inside of a city itself. It's like market Inception
its aliexppres the building
@@jarivanderheijden737 Seems like it. I bet you could walk around for a day or two [full 24 hour days] and not see the same stall twice
Could you make this a series? It would be cool to see how many episodes it would take to cover the majority of the markets.
Well he said 75,000 stores - so he could probably make an entirely separate channel just for this market and not be able to fully cover it in a year.
I would like to see those 50 episodes!
Bryce Johnson you've got enough UA-cam content to last the next 10 years in this place
Bryce Johnson my friend told me that.....just stick around each yiwu store for 1 min....and do that like 8 hours a day without weekend break.....it will take you almost 6 months to browse each store once.
And you might need to consider the turnover, new old wholesaler come and go

complete mindblowing, also the place is clean, i mean there's ton of people who goes there everyday but everything looked so clean and organized
Alex Araldi cuz this market is selling stuffs to the world.
Maybe China is not that messy of a place as you thought it'd be. It's pretty clean with well designed landscapes in most of the places I've been to.
Alex Araldi It's a mall for professionals who buy in bulk to resell, that's one of the reason I think
That city locates in one of the richer, cleaner and more educated provinces of China.
Make no mistake, each little shop represents a giant factory with thousands of workers. For each product a suitable mold and infrastructure must be in place to produce it. The mall like structure is simply for convenience of international traders.
Yiwu is one of the commodity markets, it’s famous for small gadgets, low price and large stock. Actually in China different cities have its different products, for example, if you wanna buy electronic products, come to Shenzhen, for furnitures, to Foshan, clothes, to Guangzhou
Thanks Lucy..very helpful & informative...keep them coming districts vs products

I'm sitting in my nice little US, MI, home, with my mouth agape, watching this video. I have known for years that EVERYTHING we own comes from China. Perfectly comfortable with the realization. I kind of lost track when the electronics market shifted from Japan to China, but that's a personal observation. Knowing the magnitude of the shift is what has me mindf*cked. It's places like this that I also could explore for weeks endlessly.
As of the time of my writing this post, the US and China are embroiled in trade wars. A friend of mine mentioned to me quite a few years back that China heavily relies on the US financially. I pooh-poohed his comment. I debated that China has global markets that they can easily turn to and crush the US. Seeing this, they still could. Granted, the UN would politely slap their hands in a gesture of political correctness. But I'll be damned if I'm not right in my position.
Hey man, if you want to experience China, let me know. You can work legally here in the state-run company as an English teacher in Shenzhen
@@charlesqin3944 how much can i get paid working in china?
Especially during the outbreak, US realized that China has a whole industry supply chain, and China no longer listens to them that much. So US worried that the world ’s second largest economy will threaten them. I think in the days to come, the United States will sanction China even more crazily.
USA used to have the design and brands and China was the low-cost producer. A perfect marriage for USA, they get the high margins while China gets the low margins. Now China is competing in the design and their OEM products and become the competitor. This is the reason for the trade war and the China bashing.
I was there for my previous business in 2016 and I can confirm all you've said. I was there for 10 days and I barely covered what I came there to see. You don't realize the size of the place unless you're there. Imagine your local mall. Now imagine if you stack 100 of them next to each other and make the shops tiny. Now take all of that and make it 5 floors. Now you have what Yiwu really is.
I wish you had walked the hardware district. It's really amazing. You can literally go there and create your own tool brand within days.
All the big chains like Wallmart, Costco etc have offices in the building. They are there to look for new things.
And they said infinity war was the most ambitious crossover event in history
Great video as usual. Even though i knew all those stuff came from China, it still blew my mind to see how organized and clean the sampling place is, and the sheer size of it is just beyond words!
Also, the Confederation store made me laugh so much! Those people are buying that kind of stuff while the Chinese are like "sure, go ahead and hate us while we profit off your hate".
A city built to promote and sell items a country produces. Bloody amazing.
Wow, that was an eye opener! The “Americana made in China” and “Made in China Confederate” stores were absolutely hilarious 😂
I was just thinking, right before you said it, that is like a permanent trade show :)
That guy from Dubai just inspired me. 5 shops in 5 countries with just door handles. Amazing. Lol
@General YeahYeah I get you but didn't mean I would go into the same business. It just inspired me that I can go for a business that others may think is not a good choice.

I always wondered, what is the price difference for wholesale on alibaba, compared to "in store" purchases in china?
You live in heaven :D
Wait... UA-cam is banned in china🤔
The first time I went to China was the year 1983. I went there to visit my uncle and his family. They were dirt poor back then. They had almost nothing at all. Now, in just more than 30 years later, my cousin owns a garment factory and exports his products. When he plans to visit me, he will first wechat me and say, " Hey! I am going to visit you in a few days. What do you want? You name it. We have it."

This building is full of “factory stores”. It’s not necessarily made in this town, but any business that is of a global supply capability basicly has a factory sample store in this building. 30% of the worlds consumables are ordered in this building. Most of the “non food” items in Walmart, were ordered in this building, everything “except food” in your dollar/pound stores were ordered in this building.

I just noticed that after the counter he used "right?" in the same context and what an improvement that was
It has its place but using it three times in a sentence signifies a kind of... impatience with yourself to finish your thought.
Giving yourself a second of silence, be that before or during your sentence, is actually a power move.. who would have guessed :P
14:55 this is very interesting right here, if you notice Scots reaction here this is the physical reaction to a phenomenon called “culture shock” which is very interesting because he’s live in China for a long time, he’s walked through these markets, he’s met the monks on the streets, and he’s traveled... a lot... to see someone who is from my perspective at least this cultured and this aware of specifically Chinese culture here experience culture shock is just...it goes to show you that no matter how much you know a place, or a people, or an area, there’s always something new to learn

That's actually insane. It took China 40 years to completely rule world commerce. Blows my mind how much stuff China makes and exports.
Yes but it comes at a HUGE environmental price to China.
True, however that's the price of industrialisation. Its the same here in the UK and in the USA.
That's true. But without it, we will still a poor country, people even have not enough food....Just look at India, they made nothing, and still have the HUGE environmental price.....

there are many specialized market or even entire city in China, all over the place; for specialized i mean the entire city or town only sells one thing, like umbrellas or eyeglasses. There are retail or wholesale stores in EVERY STREET just selling one type of item.
