    I took a tour around the Yiwu Industrial Trade City - the largest wholesale market in the world. People come here from every country to buy goods to export. 5.5 million square meters, 7km long, this market is beyond giant. And it's all one interconnected building. I explored it for a day with Collin Abroadcast, a fellow market fanatic. From Christmas decorations to children's toys to hardware and tools, we found a bunch of stuff that blew our minds.

    When I was in collage, I once doing a translation work for the buyer from North Europe, and they want to buy some scarf. I was like ,ok ,North Europe, Rich, will be easy, cause they will not buy too cheap things. Cheap things is very annoying to check the quality by the way.And they tell me they want to buy some good quality with reasonable price.I was still a young man who want to do my job perfect at that time, so I find my friend who has a cousin own a factory which famous for their stable quality ,and the factory give me a very good price.
    Then I send the sample and my price, but the Euro guy reply said quality is ok, but the price is too high. It is 14RMB each piece, for the quality it is very cheap.So I said this is my lowest price,if you want a lower one, it may have to drop the quality, and the Euro guys said OK,send me a sample.So I send a sample with lower quality and lower price,still not happy.A few round later, he finally agree to buy 4000pieces, in 7RMB.But to be truth, If I am the customer I will not buy that scarf even it is 7Rmb, I can not say it is GOOD quality,but he is the buyer,and he seems satisfied with the quality.
    So 1 years later, I was be told that the scarf I sold to him,in Europe is 14EU each! 10 times of price.So next time when you guys blame times's poor quality which Made in China, blame the dealer.Cause they are the guys who make the orders.

      @kittycatcuties 4 роки тому +140

      @@mooselove Why is that weird? Some people have this bad image of china in terms of the quality of products they produce when the Chinese are perfectly capable of making quality products, it's because of businesspeople who rather sell low quality overpriced products then good quality products. Imo neither side is really wrong, except for the businesses that exploit sweatshops. I feel like Stif_fryCook_oo7 was trying to explain that with his anecdote.

      Sadly, A 10 times production price is not unusual. On other I know someone working with Electronics, and cursing over Chinese products don't live up to safefty standards. Only companies with Chinese workers, don't have these issues.

    Someone needs to do a proper documentary series on Yiwu. Some of those designs have been in circulation for decades. I recognise them from my childhood. So much of the world’s material culture must be tied up in that place.

    • @lianghao7128
      @lianghao7128 6 років тому +10

      No no no. many of these things actually come from Europe. The one Belt one Road opened. The train from London to Yiwu was opened last year. So it's actually the world's product

    • @madhaha
      @madhaha 6 років тому +24

      梁浩 This is equally or perhaps more interesting: where the designs originate. My partner noticed for example there was a collection of pig figurines with Russian blessings. This has no cultural significance to the Russians. So are they Chinese new year pigs for Russians? Are they Chinese or Russian designs? Are they importing or exporting and to where? Do they have the rest of the Zodiac or carry other languages?

      One Belt one Road infrastructure linking Europe Asia Africa three continents. In the future, North America and South America will also be linked. So European products can be easily transported to Yiwu, and many products you see in Yiwu come from Europe. You can search on the UA-cam, one Belt one Road.

      Have you seen the "exhibition and trade centre of African products" in the end? It's all about "made in Africa" things. This place is so big, that not only buyers all over the world come here to buy things, but also the sellers and producers come here to sell things.

    I'm sitting in my nice little US, MI, home, with my mouth agape, watching this video. I have known for years that EVERYTHING we own comes from China. Perfectly comfortable with the realization. I kind of lost track when the electronics market shifted from Japan to China, but that's a personal observation. Knowing the magnitude of the shift is what has me mindf*cked. It's places like this that I also could explore for weeks endlessly.
    As of the time of my writing this post, the US and China are embroiled in trade wars. A friend of mine mentioned to me quite a few years back that China heavily relies on the US financially. I pooh-poohed his comment. I debated that China has global markets that they can easily turn to and crush the US. Seeing this, they still could. Granted, the UN would politely slap their hands in a gesture of political correctness. But I'll be damned if I'm not right in my position.

      Especially during the outbreak, US realized that China has a whole industry supply chain, and China no longer listens to them that much. So US worried that the world ’s second largest economy will threaten them. I think in the days to come, the United States will sanction China even more crazily.

    • @nsebast
      @nsebast Рік тому +1

      USA used to have the design and brands and China was the low-cost producer. A perfect marriage for USA, they get the high margins while China gets the low margins. Now China is competing in the design and their OEM products and become the competitor. This is the reason for the trade war and the China bashing.

    I was there for my previous business in 2016 and I can confirm all you've said. I was there for 10 days and I barely covered what I came there to see. You don't realize the size of the place unless you're there. Imagine your local mall. Now imagine if you stack 100 of them next to each other and make the shops tiny. Now take all of that and make it 5 floors. Now you have what Yiwu really is.
    I wish you had walked the hardware district. It's really amazing. You can literally go there and create your own tool brand within days.
    All the big chains like Wallmart, Costco etc have offices in the building. They are there to look for new things.

    This building is full of “factory stores”. It’s not necessarily made in this town, but any business that is of a global supply capability basicly has a factory sample store in this building. 30% of the worlds consumables are ordered in this building. Most of the “non food” items in Walmart, were ordered in this building, everything “except food” in your dollar/pound stores were ordered in this building.
