FULL STORY:
The city-state of Sparta, located in the southern region of ancient Greece, was one of the most powerful military powers of its time. Spartans were renowned for their discipline, physical strength, and courage on the battlefield, and their society was built around these values.
The rise of Sparta can be traced back to the 8th century BC, when the city-state began to expand its territory and establish its dominance over neighboring regions. The Spartans focused heavily on military training, with boys as young as seven being taken from their families and placed into rigorous military schools. They were taught to endure hardship, to fight with a spear and shield, and to always prioritize the needs of the community over the individual.
The Spartan military was feared and respected by its enemies, and the city-state achieved many victories on the battlefield. However, their defeat at the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC marked the beginning of the end for Sparta. This defeat led to political instability within the city-state, and other Greek states began to take advantage of their weakened state.
Sparta's failure to adapt to changing times and address external threats ultimately led to their downfall. Despite their military might, the Spartans were unable to keep up with the changing world around them. They were unable to compete with the rise of Macedon and the spread of Hellenistic culture throughout the Mediterranean.
Today, the legacy of Sparta lives on in popular culture, with the city-state often depicted as the embodiment of strength, courage, and discipline. While their society may no longer exist, the legacy of the Spartans as fierce warriors endures to this day.
Thanks for the information, I wish to be a part of Sparta one day or the other, if they will even be there in this world ...😢...

Why Sparta Fell: sparta was extremely against having an empire, due to that fact, and their bad trade relations, they where underpopulated. they where wining war after war, but eventually they where drained. as if that wasn’t enough the slaves revolted causing the spartans to kill most of them; ergo, no one was tending to the land, they dissolved their military, took on farming, and many warriors became mercenaries and high ranking military officials in other city states, when Rome came they took all remaining military officials to serve their army, and sparta turned into an agricultural society.
Thank you damn the dude had to go on about sparta but not explain why it fell
@@yhnah1329When he put rome. Thats exactly how they fell cause rome decided to Attack Sparta😂
@@ShuraOni198 yeah but it's not like sparta just ceased to exist after that
Sparta fell because they had no effective mechanism for upward social mobility in their society, but they did have an effective mechanism for downward social mobility. When it’s easy to fall out of the warrior-caste and very difficult to rise into it, the decline of the society is inevitable.
Rome had nothing to do with the decline of Sparta. By the time Rome was any kind of player in the Greek world, Sparta was basically a theme park celebrating its history.
Also, and just for the record, Sparta lost its share of wars, too. It had a good string of successes, but it had its share of failures, even before it had become a shadow of its former self.
Dam, the youngun s forgot the Old Ways is what it sounds like.
Long story short, they ran out of eligible citizens
Exactly. They would kill any child born with the slightest defect. We've learned since then , that this doesn't make you less. But some times more. My nephew born with no legs from the knees down. His brothers would not ease up on him one wit. Where ever they went he went with them. He climbed trees. And by the time he was in high school. He was bench pressing 450 pounds. He drives a truck , bull dozer, dump Trump, backhoe , and he is a top mechanic. He is called all the time. Had to get two phones because he is wanted so much for his ability and work ethics.

Fun fact: Spartans were known for their unique approach to parenting. At the age of seven, Spartan boys would leave their homes and begin their rigorous military training at state-run institutions called agoge. During their training, they would learn essential skills such as combat techniques, survival, and discipline, all with the aim of producing strong and disciplined warriors. This intense upbringing was a key factor in shaping the fearsome reputation of Spartan warriors on the battlefield.
Sounds a lot like North Korean society today.
@@jeffbowman9273 You know, except that all Spartan Citizens were basically aristocracy, fed by a slave population many times their own size. Meanwhile North Koreas army is starving just as much as everyone else

They did SEAL training but there was no warm showers or lunch breaks as I understand it
Boil water and you have a warm bath
@@EatDatBitchAwpthat went over your head lol
Nah, it was far from SEAL training, especially as the expected tactics were very simple. Instead the largest part of the education was centered around athleticism and sports, grooming, and philosophy (Off the battlefield the Spartans were known for their traditional fancy long hair, and the school of philosophy known as Stoicism)
Spartans fight for the rest of their lives, not retiring at prime age and then become a motivator bragging about carrying a boat
@@dragon12234 i thought athenians were the groomers 😂
State induced courage. The Peloponnesian war shattered Sparta image of invincibility. Especially at the battle of Sphacteria
Sparta slowly dwindled to a population of 1000 as they sunk into irrelevance. Too many losses to infanticide mostly but fighting also took its toll. Unless a baby was perfect in every way it was abandoned to the elements. Perfect is the enemy of good enough, always.
This is wrong and kinda stupid (no, you are not stupid. The idea is). People were a precious commodity back then. Especially on farms and doing skilled trade.
The mass murder of imperfect infants is a fallacy that refuses to die. Archeologists have not found ANY evidence of such that would be obviously noticeable around the city.
I would love to travel to Greece.. fascinating history
They ended up emigrating to East Lansing Michigan where they started a college !
This is why being strong is not always the key to survival.
Conclusion: Adapt or get extinct.
Having a population of slaves that outnumber free citizens by about five to one, and proceeding to treat said slave population horribly even by Ancient Greek standards, is not a very good domestic policy.
Yeah they also had no allies because they were known for breaking their word
Sparta's population dwindled quickly because the Spartan system was so hostile to the continuation of families and having children. The only way a man could see his wife is if he snuck out of the barracks.
They could have changed that part of their system without ruining the idea of training every day.
Everybody knows the most iconic moment of Sparta is the 300 Spartans vs Persia.
"Spartan boys were trained from a young age" you bet they were...and the women shaved their heads on their wedding night to look more like a man. The decline of Sparta was in part due to their low birth rate.
And dont forget that they were some of the most brutal slave owners in the region at that time.
The Spartan men had long hair.
Excellent story in this documentary
Epaminondas was the first true Military Genius of the ancient world. Only fitting he defeated the Spartans and ended their hegemony.
What about Miltiades?
The only reason that the Spartans have lost was because their numbers were not great there were only 30000 of them
I dont exactly see a benefit for killing innocent newborn child that shows weakness that lead to be underpopulated. But they should've changed the culture and let those Child live since their military training and discipline would change those weak children into strong man nor Warrior. But they didn't, Cause they were so drunk that they never once thought to Bury that Culture but its their fault that theres only 30000 of them😭

Eh, they also failed to adapt to new military tactics and technologies. Sure they had excellent hoplites, but every other Greek City state developed cavalry, skirmishers, and so on that made them a lot more flexible. Likewise they fell behind economically as the majority population were slaves that the citizens had to regularly cull in order to prevent uprisings.
Although they were badasses in combat, their politics and adaptability were horrible. Scheming and just not keeping up with ranged weapons made them weaker by the years, and infighting among young boys that led to death also reduced some numbers plus the fighting with other countries. I get their code was their life, but because of that code, is why their country no longer exsists.
The politics were descent imo idk
As recent evidence shows, only a small portion of their history do they attempt to make this warrior society material, but had a lot of backlash. They had a good military rep but we’re just as much politicians. If anything their fall is less gradual and more of a set of spirals. Late Sparta post Alexander is pretty active.
Be water/bamboo,not rock /Steal.Adapt or die.
Wow what a great story!
The Spartans should have hired mercenaries to fight for them, like the Carthaginians did.
Imagine if Spartans had more people
Its actually 100% possible if they've only changed their Brutal culture which is "Killing Newborn Child that shows Weaknesses". Which is very idiotic, Considering that they can change those weak into a Strong warrior beacause their Military training and Discipline will definitely change them *Mentally and Physically* yet they never though of that! "Even Once" 😭
@@ShuraOni198 That's largely a myth/propaganda. Population was limited on purpose due to the small area of land available, and how their society was organized to maintain & conserve what they had, rather than to expand. Sparta wanted to avoid the 'boom and bust' nature of states at that time, and ensure a stable society, but in the end that stability became stagnation and the rest of Greece surpassed them as athletes, warriors and cultures.

Then that wouldn't have been Spartan culture, that would have been the same as the rest of the Greek world.
They did of course adapt their military strategy, they stopped providing Sparta troops to aid allies and instead sent military advisors "one war, one Spartan" to avoid casualties. They used Helots as troops, again to try and preserve the core Spartan warrior caste for as long as possible.
They simply had an impossible task, to keep pace with the rest of Greece while boxed in and set in their ways.

Extreme oversimplification. Sparta continued to be a powerhouse, given their size, up through the phyrric wars, which was a awhile after 371bc. I don't think it was a weakness that made Sparta irrelevant on a world stage, but instead too heavy a focus on the quality of their soldiers and not enough quantity. Sparta would continue to be problem even for rome, but they never would be able to field an army strong enough alone to change much after the Macedonian wars, always being part of a larger Greek force from that period forward.
The Macedons Were using Longer Spears called "Phalanx". While spartans were using "Shield Phalanx" With short spear. And im pretty sure the macedons showered them with projectiles like Arrows and Slingshots cause that was spartas greatest weakness......
They never used projectiles cause they find it *COWARDLY* which is why they lost a lot of wars to athens and thebes😂

Because all roads lead to…
It was there system that destroyed them
Sparta, one of the most exaggerated people out there over a movie lol.
To get 300 movie sparta on real life we need This made these 3 reforms
1-Spartiate lineage
Spartiate was the elite military of sparta, was a very well trained, Disciplined and experienced force but had a problem,Only nobles could serve in the Spartiate force, if they did like the Theban sacred battalion, simply selecting the best soldiers, it would be better
2-Support population growth
The Spartans had homosexual practices and could not see their wives until they were 30 years old and finished the agoge (Spartan military training) only after 30 could Spartans marry and vote,Probably if in late agoge, 25 years old for example, it would be good if they were a little free and met some women on their days off
3-More importantly, helot issue
The helots were the Spartan slaves, they did the agricultural work, but thanks to there being many more helots than Spartans, the Spartans never launched offensives too far from home out of fear of helot slaves rebell.
If Sparta did like Rome and gave Spartan citizenship to helots at age 30 and reduced some of the helot agricultural workload, they would have problems in the first few years with agriculture, but they They could adapt, and incorporating the helots into the Spartan army as emergency aids more often would be interesting, in the platea battle Sparta mobilized a contingent of 40 thousand men, however around 30 thousand of these soldiers were armed helots, even though the helots were poorly trained and different from the hoplites who had a Bronze protection on the wooden shield, and the helots were just wood, a numerical force of helots to cover the Spartan flanks and rear in major battles would be decisive
@@TokitoZinnthat’s not true. The Spartans were deliberately away from the wives to increase the love they had for each other.

Moral of the story turns out they weren’t so tough after all lol
Nothing known about Sparta was written by them. One thing was the myth and another reality .
I see some people referencing Spartans killing babies born with defects and such and I’m going to tell you that’s a myth. There’s also no archeological evidence of that. Without evidence, It’s just more propaganda making Sparta into what it never was.
As for Sparta’s downfall: its many things adding into each other but ultimately their societal ways being the core issue. From only spartan citizen elites getting to be the proper professional soldier (Sparta’s actual professional military was pretty small when you actually look into it), to the helots outnumbering them so much that Sparta feared having military campaigns away from home in case of slave rebellions, to women inheriting the wealth and land if their husband died (generally these are past along to sons but Sparta was different and when you need wealth and land to be considered a spartan elite to be eligible for military? This eventually causes the manpower issues Sparta had). And reproduction was also pretty limited to where soldiers had to sneak around if they wanted to have sons as you was forbidden from being with your wife till after your military service was done. If you died before then? Well that’s a lineage potentially ended. Spartan society was so extreme to being the 1% that it killed them.
Imagine if they treated lower classes better or even gave citizenship to their helots who could’ve helped them in military manpower. They might not have ended up being a joke in their twilight years as a tourist attraction in the Roman era, hell even Phillip II didn’t see Sparta worth the military effort because what was there to conquer by then?
You end up glorified as this once invincible military force to being a joke of a society that you aren’t even worth conquering cause your lands offer absolutely nothing.
Everything was rise and fall.

Lots of pop history here. The agoge was not a military training school. There's not much evidence that Spartan forces were physically stronger even if the elite spartiates themselves could afford better diets and leisure training time. The military training they did receive was probably balanced out by the very much not-elite forces they captained (perioikoi, helots, etc). There were many factors leading to the downfall of Sparta, not the least of which was their unsustainable slave culture. What is true is that the popular idea of Spartans is their legacy - an unearned one.
Of course there is evidence that they were stronger & ruthless. Have you not read the stories about their accounts at all the Combat Sport events in the Olympic Games? Simply Ruthless, thats hwy they were kicked out of those events.
