ADA stands for Air Defense Artillery. This has a long and proud history the has its roots in coastal artillery. As the nature of warfare changed, coastal artillery focused on air defense threats.
When aircraft eclipsed ship to shore bombardment as the greatest threat, the Army invented anti-aircraft missiles that were designed to shoot down Soviet bombers.
The Patriot missile is the Army's premier air defense missile. This system is essentially the Army's strategic power projection platform. The system has a range of roughly 99 miles 160 Kilometers and can track and engage over 100 targets simultaneously in fully automated mode.
NOTE: I have taken some creative and operational security liberties with the Patriot Radar screen. The the real Patriot is an Oreo, this is the Hydrox.

Senior 14T here..... stop telling our secrets
My father was a HAWK Missile (and later Patriot) Radar Tech LAR for Raytheon. He was onboard from HAWK's inception until it's retirement from US Army inventory. He worked on iHAWK and eventually was brought back into the HAWK Program for a few years to work on integrating NOAH (NOrwegian Adapted HAWK). Around 1980 he started working on Patriot and actually worked on several of the original TMs for radar repair of Patriot. I can remember him drawing huge flowcharts at the kitchen table and typing furiously on an IBM Selectric as he worked on first GROKING in Fullness Patriot then actually writing the manuals.
He happened to be PCS'd in Germany when Iraq invaded Kuwait. One thing he absolutely wouldn't do was have a phone (that he gave the number out to work) or carry a pager. One Sunday morning, there was a furious banging on his door. He went to go check it, and there was a full-bird Colonel who was pissed as all fuck standing on his doorstep. Parked outside was a whole patriot battery. Everything, every vehicle you could imagine. Turns out they were deploying to Saudi Arabia quick, fast and in a hurry. Just one problem. One of the radars had taken a lightning strike and the GI's couldn't fix it. So they brought it to him. At 7AM. On a Sunday morning. In a convoy that was strung out about 3 miles long. That was snaked through 2 villages. That had traffic snarled up. The story goes there was a HUMVEE bringing parts. He would ask for a part, someone hopped on the radio, and someone dug out a part and the part came to him. If Mohammed won't go to the mountain, the mountain went to Mohammed. He told me this story a few times and I didn't know if it was true until his co-workers retold it at his funeral.
I learned through the grapevine that HAWK had an issue that when the launch command was given, it took several moments for the Hydraulic Accumulator to spin up in the bird and power required caused a power spike that could be seen in the output of the High Power Illuminator thus informing that pilot that had his eyes on the TWS that he had been launched on. I asked my dad about it and he was astonished that I knew about it and said it was one of the reasons that the Army shifted away from HAWK. He also worked on an Optically Guided HAWK.
Growing up, I actually got to press the "GO" button on a HAWK launch at White Sands (things were WAAAAY different in 1975). I drew a picture of the mobile HAWK Launcher from memory and my dad gave it to the Battery CO. The Battery CO hung it in his office. Eight year old me was very proud of that picture. I also got to do several simulated engagements on Patriot equipment back in the early `90's. I have a lot of fond memories of crawling all over HAWK and Patriot equipment growing up.
That's badass man, what a hell of a story. 🔥🔥
That's a brilliant story, your Dad must have been incredibly knowledgable!

Former 14T here! I was in Kuwait during the 2019-2020 time frame, and around January we had some “drama” happen with a drone that caused ADA to be on high alert for our AO. I remember the countless days and nights we spent covering our shifts, and it was nonstop real world scenarios every day for a little over a month. The adrenaline rush you get from your squad leader kicking in the door of the crew shack at 3 AM, waking you up to rush downrange and power up those launchers- it’s something I will never forget. Running in the dark through the sand trying not to trip over your untied bootlaces or any cables, the loud police like sirens wailing through the air, the chaotic teamwork between you and your hot crew. I cherish my time in ADA, and I’m glad I found this video! Brings back many fond memories :) Thank you!

As a 14E myself this was probably the best video to explain the system on UA-cam. A few details left out but still an awesome video.
I was a 24T back in the 90s. It's cool to see how the system has changed. In my day, we only had PAC3 missiles, our screen was a CRT, and we just started covering behind the main array with lead to protect birds that flew by. Cool stuff. I still remember many things that were classifies as secret. People have no idea what else the system is capable of.

Transparency in problem solving is something that we all need more of. This guy does it all with his videos. Take individual subjects that many of us would try and learn from a 3 sentence Facebook meme and expands them into videos, disclosing all the dynamics of it. It's information like this that allows people to understand a matter, have a discussion with each other on it, and even disagree on. WHICH IS AWESOME!. That was fantastic. As I sat here watching this then hearing the alarm actual go off, I felt my own anxiety level and heart rate climbing. Tip of my hat to the soldiers that protect our assets. I'm probably not the type of guy they'd be looking for. I get wound up too tight by heavy rushes of adrenilin, which can sometimes get the better of me. Our military makes me proud!
Thank very much for a well done presentation, we all are much smarter for it. Ryan I'm sure you were a damn good soldier with your attention to even the smallest details. AWESOME Sauce dude!
That was my intention. I wanted to make people feel uncomfortable. Glad it worked.
Not quite what an alarm on a Patriot site sounds like. The sound used here is from a warn tower on a C-RAM system (specifically the LPWS).
@@BraceWuyne I noticed that too. I've been up close and personal with the external alerts on the ECS and ICC. The pitch was different than what was in the video. Still very close to what it actually is.
@@menachemdavid3535 The external alert doesn't just stay pressed the whole time during a TBM engagement, the BCPs alert and calls for movement to the bunker would be closer. That's an LRAD of sorts at most line units. Even then they sound it and go back to their job.
Holy cow. I wish every single person who derided veterans with combat-related mental health issues was forced to watch that simulation. Regardless of what you think about the military - and I certainly have my issues with it - how we treat veterans is criminal. I can't even imagine having to come back to civilian life after dealing with the potential to have to deal with something like that with no warning or preparation just out of the blue every single day. The sheer trauma of that, the unbelievable gall of people expecting you to put up with petty workplace drama or be stressed by stuff that doesn't *really* matter at the end of the day... Having been through even just the trauma of being adjacent to folks murdered by police brutality, knowing how hard it was to relate to others who hadn't been through that... The idea of coming back to normal life and relating to people without shared experiences after something like *this* is just difficult to comprehend.

Ryan, at the beginning of the video explained why air defense artillery, in the US, is part of the Army. It's lineage traces back to Coast Artillery. When coastal artillery became obsolete the air defense mission was assigned to the coastal defense element in the Army, which was part of the artillery forces. The Air Defense Artillery Branch didn't become a separate branch until 1968/9 when the missile-trained personnel were assigned to gun artillery in Vietnam and experienced difficulties performing. Similarly, gun-trained personnel assigned to missile units performed poorly. Former ADA Officer, Retired.

She still is an absolute angel, and her dad is humble as all hell. One day while we’re chilling in her living room he comes home, in full army uniform with wicked big ranks and I just go “Woah, nice falafels (our slang for the rank icons - oak leaves)”
Turns out he also was the director of information security for a good while. And the man is absolutely humble and kind, and the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. They’re a great family.
Thank you for the hard work and insightful content!
These are superb video productions. I have never had the whole team break down, engagement procedure and weapons systems broken down in such detail before. Putting this together was clearly a major task for you - and it really worked. It feels like revising for an exam - in a good way.
that was AWESOME, Ryan! thank you for shanring that with us! Loved the simulation!
I am a former 14E. When I was active duty a fully manned Battery was about 85 personnel. To do the same job the Air Force wanted close to 200. That is why the Army maintains control of the system.
WOW! Great video! I'm so glad there is someone as knowledgeable and patient as yourself that is willing to share what it takes to keep our and other countries safe.
Man, you make some great videos. Stumbled onto your channel a few days ago and *every* *single* *video* is extremely well done, engaging, and pure content with zero filler. Bravo, sir! keep it up!
Holy Moly, your research and expert help has revealed elements of these so called well known systems shows that there is literally an army of top level operators, giving 24/7 force protection. And yet almost nobody knows they exist. Incredible 😮
We all have to give credit where credit is due. Nobody asked for the specifics but that’s what he gives for each and every video, he gives every single detail that plays a big factor and he doesn’t do what some people do and talk about the boring stuff like how it’s programmed with the motherboard
And electronics (yk) he only states what people would like to hear. Gotta hand it to him, the day I saw his channel I instantly subscribed. Now every day when I find a new video I instantly thumbs up knowing it’s gonna be great. Nice work Ryan!
I have been watching your videos since your first shorts, and they have all been awesome. This was THE BEST video I have seen so far. I felt like I was right there hoping that ballistic missiles didn't drop on my head while I waited for confirmation on their destruction. Thank you for your insight again on another complicated topic.
this is a great channel. thanks Ryan McBeth for all your hardwork!
Thank you Ryan.
My son was a 14t back in the 1990's. Yeah, he was "there" when stuff was going on. He was on the cover of Army Times newspaper.
Thanks for the good video.
Bob/proud Army dad.
Thanks for that easy to follow explaination of the Patriot system, all your work is appreciated.
I just found this channel and can't express how fascinating it is! You took what is clearly a vastly complicated system and broke it down so that even I can have a basic grasp of it. Looking forward to more!
What an informative insight! Very impressive and good to have this system in the Netherlands Army.
My late father-in-law spent part of his childhood at Fort H.G. Wright in Fishers Island off the coast of Connecticut. His dad was an NCO in the coastal artillery. Charlie used to sit nearby and watch them fire the guns, so of course he was as deaf as a post later in life. The fort was closed after WWII. Thanks for your work on this very interesting topic.
A comprehensive explanation of a highly complex system. Thanks
Wow, writing software to this system is a real deal! Just imagine that you program the device for such complicated intercept and auto engage procedures
And people think that FAANG companies are awesome. Let’s write software to help people buy stuff they don’t need. You go ahead and do that, I’ll be over here defending America.
I think that worst part is a radar signal realtime processing. To chose the appropriate launcher and missile is kinda easy.
Absolutely a pleasure to watch; I appreciate the tremendous amount of work you went to Ryan.
Your professionalism is exceptional. Thank you.
I think something worth mentioning since this video came out was that the newest version of the patriot missile system that is just now in the process of testing and rolling out will allow the patriot missiles to use other radars besides the patriot radar. So hypothetically if you had a f35 engaged in combat beyond the horizon - you could launch the patriot towards the fight and then the f35's radar could then talk to the patriot missile and guide it in. It also will be able to talk to things like the AEGIS ashore and the Sea version as well. Looks like the patriot will even be deployed on some surface ships coming up soonish too.
Thank you for being a trusted source
the amount of effort you put in really shows, really interesting and informative.
80 hours?!? Holy crap Ryan this was amazing!
Damn that “incoming! incoming! incoming!” With the beeping is nerve racking alone
I saw this then your long form video. I’m seriously impressed with the amount of work and detail that went in to describe the Patriot System and the soldiers that run it. You did incredible work and gave credit due to these wonderful men and women. Thank you.
Thank you Ryan!!! Your channel has become must see info for me these days! I really hope all of your hard work is rewarded by the algorithm!!!
It already has! Once I started following the Ukraine War Ryan's shorts suddenly started popping up on my feed like so many mushrooms!🤖😉
That bit at the end actually gave me anxiety, holy hell that’s a lot of responsibility. Frightening to think about, mad respect to those that do this.
Thanks!
My Dad was one of the first generation of Patriot officers, so we lived on post in El Paso.
He’s a literal Mensa member who got 0 questions wrong during all of OCS; eventually officer reclassed to DoD/Fed biometrics.
He had always said the Army shuttled all the smart guys into Patriot batteries, who were then bored out of their minds from the lack of intellectual advancement.
Shows how pre 9/11 was a different Army/world fr
Just came here from your video on the possible Ukrainian drone attack deep inside Russia on its airbases. I've mainly only seen your short-form videos and I'm not entirely sure how UA-cam brought you to me, though I do like watching military-related stuff. I must say, that this video was exceptionally well done. It's clear a TON of research went into this. I appreciate your dedication to your craft and would love to see more of these simulations or other visuals and such to explain the various concepts in the military that most civilians like myself don't understand, even if we do read a bit about the military. Thanks for putting this together and keep at it please!
UA-cam's algorithms seem to automatically put Ryan's short videos in your feed if it detects that you're following the war in Ukraine!😲
Even a robot 🤖 knows expert military analysis when it detects it!😏😁
