The Elizabeth Gaskell book about her letters sounds amazing! I loved Wives and Daughters. I absolutely adored North and South! 💕

When you mentioned Big Books, one book came to my mind that I have been intending to read for well over 40 years. In 1982, when my kids were very small, a book titled, "...AND LADIES OF THE CLUB," came out. It was all the rage, and in book stores everywhere! It was written by Helen Hooven Santmyer over a 50 year time period and printed when she was 88 years old. It was an inspiration for women, especially women writers, that it doesn't matter how long it takes you can pursue your passion and succeed with it. I bought the book at that time and began reading it, but with all the distractions by a baby son, a small daughter, and trying to do sewing alterations at home for the public, it made reading anything very difficult so I never finished the book. I still have a copy, though not my original, with hopes of eventually getting back to it. It is 1176 pages long. The story spans several decades, beginning in 1868 and ending in the 1930s. I think I will start this one again and perhaps I'll get to finish it this time!

I just started the Count of Monte Cristo and was hooked from the beginning. I heard it was a fast read for the size and I can see why. You should make it your next book!!!!

In January of this year I finished The Count of Monte Christo. It was a very good book. I kind of wished there was a part two but not as long.

My daughter and I are doing The Brothers Karamazov in November. That one. Oh, my!!!
I'd go with Monte Cristo. I read it when I was sixteen and STILL remember most of it. I need to reread.

I got half way through the Count of Monte Cristo and set it aside - I can't even remember why now. But it was fast pace and engaging. I need a little kick- start i think. Maybe i'll listen to a few chapters I've already read to get back into it. I did the same with Middlemarch, even though that was more recent and i wasn't as far into it. I think that was because i had a buddy read coming up. But i may be busy reading it with a friend when she's ready, so I don't mind starting over. And i have loads of others on my shelf! Happy reading!

I read The Count of Monte Cristo a couple of years ago, and it is such a page turner that you can actually read it pretty quickly. It's amazing; I think you'll really enjoy it. I want to read Daniel Deronda this Victober, hopefully. I've read Middlemarch and Adam Bede by Eliot and really liked them both.

The Count of Monte Cristo is excellent! It’s a real page turner story of adventure and revenge. I loved It!😊 Silas Marner is a where I started with George Eliot's novels. I enjoyed this easy to read story of redemption that warmed my heart. ♥️
I also very much enjoyed Daniel Deronda. Happy Reading!

The Count of Monte Cristo is a page turner and doesn’t feel like a long book. Every chapter is a cliff hanger! I read Daniel Deronda this past January. I second the idea of starting off with Silas Marner as a first introduction to George Eliot. Then Middlemarch and then Daniel Deronda.

Lovely video! I just started reading The Count of Monte Cristo yesterday and I was already hooked on the 2nd page or so. When my boyfriend saw me reading it, his eyes went 👀 I’ll feel very proud when I’ve finished it, although without realizing it, I might have read big books before as webnovels or serialized novels. But having it in hand hard copy, adds to the experience for me ☺️

Great list! Count of Monte Cristo is big but reads easier than you expect. It is worth it. The letters of Gaskell sounds like an interesting read and i agree with finishing her novels and then picking up the letters. I just finished Lonesome Dove and loved it. I have picked up the sequel that is also large, almost 600 pages, but the story and writing are good. I would love to tackle Les Miserable. It is in my stack and I just haven’t picked it up yet. Too many great books to choose from!

I didn't know you used to do 5 Book Friday videos - when I saw this one in my feed, I thought you were following along with Suey and Melinda (A Web of Stories) who both do 5 on Friday videos. It's a great idea! I always enjoy these. I love Dickens but haven't read Bleak House yet. I read Count of Monte Cristo a few summers ago, though my edition had a smaller page count, so it didn't look so intimidating. It is an unusually fast-paced gripping classic. The only George Elliot I've read so far was Middlemarch (which I enjoyed). I haven't read any Elizabeth Gaskell yet, but I've heard good things. Thanks for the Big Book Summer shout-out - as you know, I have a BIG stack for this summer!

    5 Book Friday is fantastic.
I love The Count and listened to and read it physically at the same time. The audio was so good! Middlemarch was a great read too. Another big book I read this year was Don Quixote which I enjoyed so much more than I thought.

    Several Charles Dickens
    Several Anthony Trollope
    Les Miserables

I just finished The Count of Monte Cristo in June. Middlemarch is my next chunkier and I’m about 200 pages into that book. I still have The Hobbit and LOTR to read as well this year. I do read other books while I’m tackling these big books. Love your channel❤

Yeah, I find reading shorter books along helps me with the longer books as well. Do you normally keep a bigger book going? I'm thinking about just always having one of these in my rotation. Hi Mitzi, hey I have two copies of Middlemarch too but haven’t read it yet! AND I have a copy of The Count of Monte Christo and want to read that as well. I read a real good book called The Last Bookshop in London, and this bookshop girl was reading The Count aloud to customers during air raids in WW 2, and they all loved it. It made you want to read it, and I’ve heard that in spite of being so long, it is quite a page turner. Anyway I really think you would enjoy The Last Bookshop in London.😊😊😊❤

I’ve read Middlemarch and I think I should do a reread because I don’t remember much about it but I have an idea I didn’t care for it. It’s so beloved I feel like I should give it another chance. I love this video idea. I’ve read one book so far for Sue’s challenge and that was The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. I have a thousand plus page book that I also want to reread, probably not this summer, but I’m intimidated because I read it years ago when it was first published. I absolutely loved it but I’m afraid to reread it almost because I know it won’t be like reading it for the first time and I cherish that memory. The book is And Ladies of the Club by Helen Hooven Santmyer. I’m sure there will be at least one more big book this summer, just not sure yet what it will be.
