      @@geerefamilyusa Big Ensoniq fan myself. Had an ESQ-1 for a while and also an SQ2 (original 21-voice version) that I purchased from an Ensoniq sound designer. (I am originally from the western suburbs of Philadelphia so Ensoniq was practically in my backyard.) The folks at Ensoniq kindly upgraded it to 32-voice and maxed the sequencer memory for me. After I sold that (having upgraded to a Yamaha Motif 8) I missed it and so acquired a couple of SQRs. Eventually picked up a TS-12 (which I still have) which was kind of the ultimate development of the line that the SD1 was part of. I kinda wish they hadn't kept changing their naming conventions; it gets kind of confusing. The SQ 1 and SQ 2 are not really part of the line of the ESQ-1 but the SQ-80 is. And then it goes VFX to VFX-SD to SD1 to SD1-32 voice to TS 10 and TS 12...And the MR and ZR series are different from the earlier ones and the Fizmo is really not all that different from the MR and despite its name is not the "PHYSical MOdeling synth that it was originally supposed to be. (The Halo isn't really even an Ensoniq; it's an E-Mu product that they slapped an Ensoniq badge on. I feel no love for the very ironically-named Creative Labs for essentially destroying two great synth companies.) But I guess if Ensoniq's marketing strategy of renaming their products as if they were completely new (when they really weren't...all that much) helped them sell more synths and helped keep them afloat, I can't really blame them. They were up against some pretty stiff competition. The irony is, I don't think they really needed to do that because Ensoniqs really don't sound like anything else and in my opinion they had already carved out their own unique place in the synth world. In addition, I always found their sequencer among the best in terms of ease of use. Ensoniq gave you a lot of instrument for the money and I really miss them and wish they were still around.

    It's "just" a digitial synth, but it's so well thought out and it has that awesome dark-smooth musical sound quality. Awesome demo!

    It seem like there was so much more innovation coming out of Ensoniq than other companies. This is not an all-you-need kind of synth, but it sure has distinctive sounds. I love the lead synth sound @ 19:29.

    Very, very good demo. Nice playing. You could have been de demo seq disk composer.
    I adore my SD1/32. It has been with me for more than 25 years. Among all other synths and soft-instruments it will always play a major role cause of its creative quality. It will be my last synth if every other one has exploded. I have upgraded my unit with a floppy emulator (based on a Gotek drive with added OLED display and other firmware) all 35 disks are on a USB stick inside the emulator. Works great! Loading AND saving.
    In the past I've been working closely together with the former Dutch Ensoniq distributor, so got access to all disks, including the SEQ OS ones. Great to have them on an USB stick now.
    Keep making these nice videos!

      Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! I recently acquired a TS12 to add to my Ensoniq collection - it's another winner and deserves its own video. I still have to explore it more, and probably expand the sample RAM so I can load some of my ASR10 samples into it. It's always great to meet another Ensoniq fan. You can always post links here whenever you have something to share. Cheers! ☮️😎

    Good Job .Glad somebody took the time to give some attention to the SD1 . There is not much on UA-cam about this great synth. I own a SD1-32, amongst a bunch of other ensoniq treasures . The first Ensoniq I got was the ESQ-1. I bought that when it came out in 86. Fantastic instrument, even today ! I also have the SQ-80, SQ1-32 and SQ-R/32, as well as an ARS10 and Mr Rack. Just bought also a TS10 that I still have to pick up. What puzzles me is that with the old ESQ1, you could hold a note or chord with one sound an already select another patch for the next notes while the other was still sounding. That's was something Genius in those days . Sadly the SD1 can't do this. There is a workaround which I used a lot live and that is to load a sequence setup which allows you to switch between the tracks while holding the other sound. Works for ESQ and also for SD1. Love your sounds btw. Oh yes, there is a multi bank cartridge available on ebay ( from italy) for not to much money. I have the ESQ1/SQ80 version from him which works great (16 banks of 40)

    The SD-1 is an extremely underrated synthesizer. It's dirty secret and it's power lies in the DSP effects.
    It has plenty of limitations, lack of resonance being the primary one, but it offers so much more in its modulation capabilities to make up for it. The onboard sequencer which enables step recording expands the creative possibilities!.
    For a digital synthesizer of the time it had a lot of analog-ish features such as repeating envelopes, a plethora of modulation capabilities, six voices each with three envelopes and two filters, model mode where one of them emulates a moog style.
    One of the stock patches is an 808 patch which sounds nothing like that Roland 808 but it's got its own distinct characteristic and is really meaty.
    Combining two filters -- (Again available to each of the six voices) -- allows creating bandpass high pass, and if tune correctly allows for extremely sharp roll offs.
    When sequencing, each patch has the capability of being routed to external auxiliary outputs, meaning you can use external effects with it or ride it through an external filter that is resonating.
    One can also completely open up the on-board filters, to realize the rich harmonics for the conventional waveforms IE triangle saw square... It made me realize and take a second look at wave table synthesis.

    In the early 1990s this was my dream synth. I finally got one a couple years ago, and I'm less of a fan. I think it really does lack low end. The factory sounds have not aged well, but if you are willing to get into deep editing there are rewards to be had.

    • @madness8556

      Agree regarding the largely boring factory sounds of the SD1. The newer TS10 had much better factory sounds and was a better instrument in every way IMHO.

    The SD-1 did not repair the looming "keyboard calibration" fault, as it too is prone to suffer from it eventually. The SD-1 adds some piano waves, one more FX algo, more polyphony and (if it is the actual SD-1 and not an upgraded VFX-SD) you get different DAC's with much more high-end information and clarity. However - I feel the best SD-1 is a converted/upgraded VFX-SD, as I prefer the fuzzier and darker sonic character to the VFX.

      Thanks man, appreciate that. The waveform at 5:25 is ALL-WAVES. It's greatly enhanced by sending through the LPF+DIST+CHO+REV effect. The LPF actually has resonance which you can control/modulate with the mod wheel!! That's actually one of my favourite patches - glad you picked up on it ☮️😎

      Sadly, this great and very innovative company was bought out by a company (to me, more like a predator) who had no interest whatsoever in their musical instruments and only wanted their sound card technology. The very ironically named "Creative Labs" not only murdered Ensoniq, but E-Mu as well. I used to live not far from Ensoniq's factory in Malvern, PA and once purchased an SQ-2 from one of their sound designers. I have also owned a couple of SQ-Rs, an ESQ-1 briefly and still have a TS-12. I love them all--nothing sounds quite like an Ensoniq, and their sequencer is still one of the best I've ever seen in terms of being very capable and yet very easy to use. Ensoniq brought sampling to the masses with the affordable Mirage in the 1980s and remained a leader in that field as well. They are greatly missed.

    Always liked Ensoniq such a shame they went bust, loved the ESQ1 though ridiculous prices now where I live for something 30+ years old that could break down anytime and haven't really got the energy or space, but the SD-1 still is a beautiful looking and sounding machine, but will likely stick to vst's and my Komplete A61 much less space needed and hassle.

    • @geerefamilyusa
      @geerefamilyusa  3 місяці тому +1

      I totally get that. Prices are insane these days! I got my SD-1 under market value because the display doesn't read correctly. But it didn't really hinder the programmability to me. I love the Ensoniq sound - always on the lookout for a bargain. I just picked up a *mint* TS-12 for $500 inc free shipping, which I thought was a decent price. Please check out my VFX-SD video, it might give you some ideas :-)

    Can you expand it with more waveforms with the cartridges or is it only more sounds? I had the SQ1+32v and was always a bit jealous on the big brothers TS. I fixed lack of delay with sequencer tricks in the songs but the SQ must have been more stripped down although it was a great start for my hobby with romplers back in highschool.

    • @MikeHageman
      @MikeHageman Місяць тому +1

      The cartridges or floppies will only bring you new sound patches, no new waveforms. They are embedded in ROM inside the machine.

    • @geerefamilyusa

      You mentioned the "big brother TS". You *can* import new waveforms on the TS12 in the form of Ensoniq samples. I only have 2Mb of sample memory in mine, which is quite limiting. But you can expand to 8Mb via standard SIMMs.

    I bought a VFXsd ver. II (21 voice) new in the 90's. After a decade it was lost to hardware failure. Years later I found an SD-1/32 on eBay for $500 and I've had it ever since. Keep an eye on the power supply as they sometimes fail. Nothing sounds like that synth! I also have a K2000r updated to K2Vx spec w/ a nice bright blue LCD display replacement.
