- We hold, and have held for centuries that a proper education is a fundamental right for all citizens, not just for those that can afford it. This core value has compelled us to create access by means of a public school system. We believe at our core that the more educated a civilization is the more the nation and its people will prosper. However, like any other systematic structure, the education system is not without flaws; flaws, that despite our tireless efforts, endless hours of research, and restructuring, we have yet to overcome. Too often, these flaws are in direct correlation with socioeconomic and racial issues that have also plagued our country. Still, there are brave educators, policymakers, and researchers that have not given up on our children and the future of education as a whole. I personally and proudly salute you.
Hip hop as genre has always had something to say about education and its importance. A genre of music that sits in the same stream as blues, jazz, R&B, and negro spirituals, hip hop at its core is a narrative. It sets out to tell the story of people and their struggles. Hip hop, in its inception was looking to be a driving force of change in urban communities. It stressed what was called “knowledge of self,” which included an understanding of where one comes from and where one is going. This stream of thought, although not as visible, has never left the genre.
It’s on this backdrop that Alma Zaragoza-Petty and I enter. A cursory survey of my music will show my passion for education and social change. Some of you may already know this, but prior to being a full time touring artist, I taught high school for six years. I helped in the development of two charter high schools, wrote curriculum and assisted in the Educational Philosophy appendix for WASC accreditation applications. These experiences coupled with first hand accounts in the classroom inspired the poem "Dear Bored of Education."
Alma, who just happens to be my wonderful wife, is a PhD candidate at UCI in the field of Educational Policy and Social Context. Alma's passion for systemic change comes from her own experience as a student in inner city Los Angeles. Her work addresses how schools and policy perpetuate negative stereotypes of low-income youth of color deemed “at risk.” She feels that this places all fault on individuals as “risky” rather than address real issues in poverty stricken communities and in a country built on a legacy of racism. She instead hopes to see a kind of public education that reflects the people it serves, both in content and through the diversity of those who serve youth. As such, her works center on humanizing the experiences of low-income urban youth by giving them voice through her research. She has over a decade of experience as an outreach counselor and community liaison and hopes to become a professor one day.
Our hope as a couple and as professionals is to be examples of the good that can come from the partnership of Hip hop and Education. We are by no means the only examples. There are programs across the country that are changing the face of Education for the better. With this project, we hope to inspire more change makers.

I can't amen this song enough. Was just talking with my husband about this because we both wanted to pursue further education. And moreover we have one daughter and would have at least 3 more (as we both adore children) but for stressing how to pay for their "Western" education when the time comes. We just decided that we are going to trust God and not be limited by that. It's amazing how wonderful life can genuinely be when you drop the unbiblical Western mindset. We both had grants and paid our way through school but only God knows the future anyway. He has always provided and never let us down. Live simply and don't let success be measured in dollars.

This track rings so true and goes deep every time I hear it. It yells truth these days. I think this is the first track I heard from Propaganda years ago and I was amazed and a fan since that day.

I have loved this song since I first heard it. It resounds with me as a homeschooling parent.
This is the realest thing I've ever heard. Man, you just put everything I've been trying to explain for years into words.
Then you're not very imaginative. This is very basic stuff that a very large proportion of people have been saying for well over 50 years.
Any fool can say it. Fixing it is a different matter entirely. The modern economy requires the skills that come from the shitty education system. If every kid wanted to become a Thomas Paine or Rabrindanath Tagore then who would manufacture our jet fuel and aeroplanes, or facilitate loans or sell computers or keep records etc etc?

This is a good example of reasons to homeschool.
This video is so dope🔥. I wonder when society will wake up to see the clean cut facts are not all we really need. If knowledge were to be the destination for all we strive to be, we'd be walking encyclopedias and dictionaries. We need the arts and experiences you can't teach, you can't test how far our dreams will be.

True! I love learning but every time I come into the 'system' I feel absolutely TRAPPED!!!
Truth be told most students even teachers hate the education systems world wide. Especially the more rigid ones that have standardise testing. We all think differently and process in different ways. God knows half the time I don't know what I'm doing but I can stumble across a brilliant conclusion.
Let's look at the beginnings of science. Yes we have the scientific method but even in that MANY ACCIDENTAL discoveries were made. There used to be a lot more freedom. We need that back. That and more practical learning.

our education system was made to make us more social. along with radio, tv, internet.. go to college, be in debt till ur 40. then make some money. if school is free why shouldn't college be? it's all about the money in the pocket of the people influencing our social and human beliefs. we're part of a puzzle and it's almost out of pieces. This is exactly the types of conversations we need to be having as guardians and advocates of children. I appreciate this so much, even when it upsets people. That "upset" creates dialogue, which can then incite change. I'm feelin' this, particularly as part of an unschooling family!

I like the video's production and also the message behind it. I do say though that, while this is a crippling effect, I think the teachers also play a part of that learning process of growth in a student. When I was in college, I took a spanish course and teacher really beileved in his students. So, whenever I stayed after school to ask him questions, he'd seem very interested in what you had to say and wanted you to learn and grow in Spanish. Because of him, the teaching I had really stuck with me especially because i respected him and therefore wanted not to let him down or myself down. If I would've kept it going, it would've been because of his encouraging teaching and the skills I obtained from it.
While the school system seems too mechanic in their learning practices, I think the teacher; especially how that teacher presents the information matter just as much. Teachers that encourage students to learn and make them confide in you matters much more than a scantron, as you have said.

What matters more, knowing when the Magna Carta was signed or knowing its impact on our laws and governance? I know I cannot recall the dates for the signing of the Magna Carta (and its variations over the centuries) but I do know its impact on our laws and how government functions in the USA... something I did not learn in School. Yeah, bored of education in its formal fashion.

I would add, that though Boards of Education have their own problems, the problems with public education don't reside primarily with them. They reside primarily with the state and federal legislators and the "education" lobbyists who make the legislators into their puppets. Boards of Education have to be federally and state compliant with law; standardized tests, AYP, etc are one of the most clear examples of how Boards have their hands tied.
To make it even more complicated, the push for project-based learning (PBL) is also a federal initiative. So teachers, while responsible for students' standardized test scores rising a certain percentage, also need to implement PBL. So your average public school teacher feels like they're being stretched on a medieval torture instrument between all the different responsibilities they're supposed to fulfill. I would know. I am one.
I'm not quitting. I'm in the struggle. I love what Propaganda has inspired in me through viewing this video, and I'll probably use it in my classroom as an inspiration and conversation piece.
Just sharing my perspective.
I actually have always learned much better through self-learning, usually by reading. Teachers are useful for the odd questions you may have, but I've never learned a whole lot in a classroom setting compared to on my own time. I think they need to get rid of note-writing. I can't pay attention to a teacher and fully understand what he's saying while I'm trying to keep up with notes at the same time. So they need to do one or the other in my opinion. Either just write notes and teach after/later or the item way around. Or just not to do notes at all and just give you them read.
