- Traffic Light Tree, Billingsgate Market, London.
Location: 51.506815,-0.010406
Date Filmed: 13-01-2018
Located on a roundabout outside Billingsgate Market, London, created by a French artist Pierre Vivant, made for an art competition.
The "tree" consists of 75 individual sets of Mellor PAGE 1990s Traffic Lights, all controlled from a Peek Controller and includes filter arrow lights and pedestrian signals. All the signals have been designed in a green colour to give the artwork characteristics of a tree.
The artwork tree was originally located on a roundabout in Canary Wharf, installed in 1998 to replace the site of a polluted tree on the roundabout. In December 2011, it was removed, following re-modelling and work on the Canary Wharf site roundabout. The council re-installed the structure between 11th November and 11th December 2013 at its new and current location.
The consistent changing of the lights are suppose to represent the bustling surroundings and everyday life of the busy city of London and Canary Wharf area. I do not know if the signals are turned off during the night but they are turned on for the majority of the average day.
I have seen it previously before in its old location and its new location. I decided to stop when travelling into London to take a few photos and a video to upload to my channel. It is certainly very unique and have not seen anything like this in the UK at all.
Thanks For Watching! - Авто та транспорт
This is what I call art.
+Max Andrew Yea, indeed. Very interesting art.
Looks like one of the green bulb has burned-out and one of the red bulb has burned-out
This probably looks cool at night
Glad this is just a display. I couldn't even imagine anyone understanding which green light you go on....
It would be a nightmare lol
That structure is pretty cool. You know, Jamie, your channel always has been and always will be the most inspiring level crossing/traffic lights/transport channel one could ever come across. I have always liked how your thumbnails and video style have always been so appealing to not just me, but also a very wide audience, and that is why your channel is doing as well as it is. You really do make it cool to be interested in level crossings, trains and traffic lights, and I am so glad to be able to call you one of my friends. I am sure that you will achieve everything you want to achieve with this channel, well done. (I couldn't hold back on this any longer, mate)
Thanks so much 😁 It's taken a lot of work to get this far and I'm so glad so many people love my content 😎😎
I noticed at the end there was a light with all three colors lit at the same time (and not just the red and yellow or simply one color).
That’s because it was took the exact time when it was turning green
@@Max-9632 That makes more sense.
Crazy that this exists
This is what I call real art
Yeah, this is one of the only modern art installations I really like :)
0:17 you can see the DLR train. Bottom left
The bulbs have now been replaced with LEDs. They still look like bulbs, but the fact that they change instantly without fading gives it away.
Yes, I am aware. I have not yet had a chance to film them again
It's a shame, i prefer halogen lights but the LEDs are probably less energy consuming
This is great! I didn't even know it existed!
+morthren I knew it existed when I was much younger and we drove past it at Canary Wharf. I've taken loads of photos but never filmed it for my YT channel. The structure itself has been rather hidden so many I imagine probably don't know it's there.
What if they made a level crossing tree lol
That would be even more confusing 😌😊
I wouldn't like to be it's neighbour with 75 sets of alarms going off continuously. :)
If it had 75 alarms London would be earblast
It will be cool
75 railway crossing alarms would extremely loud, but cool
This is SO cool!
Yeah, I love visiting and looking at this thing :)
Oh nice!!😁👍🏻 I love traffic lights aswell as Level Crossings!!
IVE BEEN THERE ON MY 8TH BIRTHDAY
Nice! Did you enjoy it?
@@doohickey-enjoyer Yes!
@@Ziomek0 Good. I want to inverst in traffic light trees. Why scrap them, when you can make art?
@@doohickey-enjoyer Exactly. We should build more of these trees if you have useless traffic lights.
I thought this was no longer in existence, as it used to be located in westferry road, I pass along aspen way just a few yards to the north, I'll have to look out for it.
Just saw the top of it today, as the flyover parapets hide most of it.
Yeah it was removed from Canary Wharf (Westferry roundabout) in December 2011 and relocated to Trafalgar Way roundabout (Billingsgate Market) in 2013.
UK Level Crossings Channel couldn’t they just keep them both
It's the same structure, just moved
Lol imagine if the lights actually controlled the traffic!
+Sam Weller It would have to be one massive junction for 75 sets of lights!
:D
There Would Be Accidents
it seems something possible in China
Great video!
Thank you 😎👍
Nice! This may be the last place you'll be able to find these Mellor PAGE signals in the UK after several years. Also, I noticed that the don't walk and walk indications were separated.
+freebrickproductions Thanks. There's still a load of Mellor signals around but in the next several years, You're probably right. All the lights on here are just sort of scattered. As you saw, a green man signal was joined onto the side of a three light signal (where usually there would be a filter arrow).
I’ll get a trip here one day
Yeah, I'd recommend it. Very interesting structure to look at 👍
I’ve seen this on TV, I think. Is this actually for public use, or is it just for show?
That looks interesting 😀
Yeah, very unique :)
My brain just exploded 😂
I love traffic lights. I would love to go and see this. the traffic lights are controlled by a computer. if the traffic lights were controlling the roundabout there would be a lot of crashes🚦🚥
+thejadedsam The structure is really cool. It would be very confusing if the traffic lights controlled this roundabout.
I love 'em too! When I was a child I was kinda crazy of seein' traffic lights... Where I live, in Argentina traffic lights are all almost LEDs & painted yellow.
You wouldn't if you had to drive, these pieces of garbage are the work of satan.
Stop. No, go! No, stop!!!
Yes, indeed 🙂🙂
lol
That is so cool
👍
Yeah it's a cool structure to look at 😊
That’s a cool work of art there. Although it does seem like it could be energy-consuming…
Yeah, I bet it uses up a fair bit of power for all those halogen traffic lights
Nice. I swear this tree was moved once.
Thanks. Yeah, I included all the details in the description. It was originally at Canary Wharf.
I wonder how long to build this thing?
I'm not too sure to be honest, it does seem like a complex structure
Lets just hope no driver mistakes it for a real light...
+Chuttlely Yeah lol, that would be too confusing.
Most drivers would know they weren’t real traffic lights as they are green and all real traffic lights in the UK are black.
Interesting piece, but the video could have been shorter. 🥳
👍
Now we need a wigwag signal tree
just without the alarms so it's less annoying
Lol 😊 That would be cool
Should have shown which belongs to which lane
What if this is what they did with all the incandescent traffic lights after they replaced them with LEDs?
They must've been old lights that were once used in London as there's a fair few of them
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel there page signals mellors
I’m doing the knowledge atm. And my run finished at billingsgate market. And I see this. I took a pic of it. Dunno why Does anyone find this kind of a bit scary/eerie. Or maybe it’s just me 😂
Yeah it does seem a bit odd and weird. I think it's quite cool tbf.
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel oh yeah. It’s definitely cool. Really awesome. Dunno why. I just thought it looked a bit creepy 😂. Dunno why. Maybe it’s just me. Great video by the the way.
When this was first made do you know if these where brand new traffic lights or where they took from other/old traffic lights that where being replaced?
I have a guess that there's a mix of newer and older lights for this sculpture
This tree is a traffic light
Man what a lot traffic light, that make me dizzy😖😖
I wonder if soon they will replace them with Telent 4g
Probably not as its artwork
UK Level Crossings Channel but the halogens use lots of energy
I saw a train at 0:13 !
Jesus Christ! I had no idea that, that existed. I saw it on google but thought it was fake, funny that 1 traffic light had a broken green signal, and that green man that came on when the amber light came on from green, and went straight off again when the red light came on. Also what line was you next too because there was a rare train crossing the bridge next too it. I wonder how many people would hesitate at them traffic lights, Must be at least 50 signals.
Ha. Well, now you know it exists! :D - The traffic lights are all controlled separately in the 'Peek' cubical and these are all 1990s halogen traffic lights. The structure is located on the roundabout outside Billingsgate Fish Market, south-east London. The DLR train is seen just behind the lights. I don't know how many would just stop lol
UK Level Crossings Channel Ahh I see, and yeah I now know it existed! Just noticed the thumb nail that has 1 light with all the lights showing. And yeah I forgot about all the other London train companies there are. I bet the traffic lights are always changing and don't all get to sit on a colour without others changing. Love there green, and wouldn't it be funny if one guy was sat in a kiosk controlling these lights and all day long moving his hands as if he was typing on a key board changing the lights from colour to colour! 😂
Idk how it change into fast lights

the human embodiment of going green by thiago aranha
Mais c'est énorme !!!
C'est une exposition ?
C'est une œuvre d'art pour une compétition il y a plusieurs années. Il a été placé sur ce rond-point.
That is a lot of traffic lights
+Jack Harris Yeah, 75 sets to be precise.
Why does it turn off ive been there
I'm not too sure, probably to prevent light pollution?
How do people know what lights they know on the tree
This is artwork / decoration and does not control traffic in real life.
Ok thanks do they still have that there
Oh something I was just thinking about where the traffic lights painted green or is it green coloured plastic?
Idk I think the plastic is green
I'm just waiting for it to be upgraded to L.E.D with the recent mass replacement of halogens plus it will make bulb changes less frequent so it's justified.
Levi James I don't know as the structure is artwork and the halogen traffic lights were iconic to London through the 1990s and 2000s. It might be considered if the traffic lights begin to stop working.. ..
UK Level Crossings Channel Yeah Mellors are fast becoming rare finding parts will be hard to come by soon I reckon.
UK Level Crossings Channel A few Mellor sites in Sheffield were once converted to LED long long ago so it's possible.
All of my local areas have TSEU or Telent LED Traffic Lights now. The Mellor signals were removed around 2008-2009.
UK Level Crossings Channel Mines a mixture of Telent 3G heads and 4G heads and Dyniqq (Peek) TLED heads. There's only one Mellor installation left in the whole Wakefield District... And one rare Siemens installation coz Wakefield have never ever used Siemens
Do I stop or do I go? What's happening?!
Lol there's so many lights
That is SCP-376.

I have to go and see this. 🚦🚦🚦🚦🚦🚦🚦🚦🚦🚦🚦🚦🚦🚦🚦🚦🚦🚦🚦🚦
It's a very unique and interesting structure to look at 👍
is this just for decoration?
G Hag yes
How did all this get here?
+Sw4gg3r G4m3r It was constructed light by light so first all the poles were inserted and then all the signals connected.
UK Level Crossings Channel, if you had to obey all of these traffic lights, you would be stuck!
:D
who the hell built this
What is this?!
A tree made up of traffic lights 😄
I belive these are mellors?
Yeah they are
This is still art, right??
Yeah, it's an artwork piece
Scp-376 just want to control traffic let him control traffic and change his name into going green traffic light
TREEFFIC LIGHT
Why scrap old signals? make art out of them!
Fun fact, this is SCP-376 www.scp-wiki.net/scp-376
+aaron smith Interesting. Why is this structure listed on SCP? Does it need Protecting?
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel TREEFFIC LIGHT
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel Sorry for the late reply, but it is a creative writing site, and somebody though this would make a good story. It's fiction.
What the heck?!-
Yes, this actually exists 😂
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannelI feel scared to see this IRL *tries to find a way to get there*
I thought the thumbnail is a fake
Lol, it's very real 😊
Talk about a ton of electricity being used with all of those incandescent lights. I love it though.
Yeah, a very interesting structure 😊
Is that actually for traffic of is it just a decoration
+Irish Railways Channel / IRC It's just artwork (decoration) and doesn't control traffic. Would be a bit confusing if it did!
UK Level Crossings Channel well its an amazing work of art. We need something like that in Dublin. Well we do have a 121m tall spire in Dublin. Google it :).
Wow. Its quite tall. Shame there's no traffic lights on it :D
UK Level Crossings Channel yeah imagine that :). The spire is 15 years old today :).

This is a joke about the tree.
Name the seed the tree started from?!!
A bulb!! 😃😂
To help others get the joke, there is a seed named a bulb and there is a light bulb.
😵😵😵😵
scp 376 lol
Yeah, I had a read on the website and it's the most bizarre nonsense I've ever read
