A little story about knots that changed my life. We were docked in Casablanca when I suddenly had problems with knots. My left hand started behaving strangely. The first officer contacted the head office in Gothenburg, which in turn fixed a doctor's appointment. Was relieved and flew home unaware that after 24 years at sea I had just finished my last contract I was diagnosed with Parkinson's which changed everything. Talk about becoming identityless. I'm not looking for sympathy on anything. I'm writing this to try to explain how incredibly much Joe's uploads mean to me. These movies have a hell of a lot of meaning to me. Many thanks for giving me a bit of my profession through you / Adam
Joe man, thanks for this video. And all the videos! I'm an Offshore Oil and Gas worker, but I work on FSO's / FPSO's. We call ourselves Semi Seamen haha. But now I have a one and a half year old, life is a lot harder at sea. Been Offshore in Qatar for six weeks and I miss him like mad but I mean this - your videos kept me sane. I watched them all, slowly but surely downloaded over a few weeks. You're an inspiration, and make me grateful for doing the job. They'll never truly know what it's like, but it is glorious at times and very hard at other times!
Joe, watching this with my 5 year old grandson. He liked it, told him about you being a Merchant Marine. So we going to get him some rope and have him practice , and show him your boat videos. Thanks for taking the time to make these movies and sharing.
Great video! Will definitely be bookmarking and rewatching a few dozen times...lol. You really are a great presenter. I think I'd watch you talk about almost anything!
Agreed David. Excellent presentation and presenter. I can't remember how many knots I've tied. I forget them all but I may start remembering now. Thanks David, Joe.
Today I learned to double the clove hitch and how to make a sheet bend into a double beckett! Fantastic video. Looking forward to the shorts as a review.
Interesting! We call the square knot a reef knot in the UK! Your method of doing a bowline was quite interesting too! Love your content man!keep it up ❤️
Shorts would be awesome as I don’t know any of this. I appreciate everything that you teach us on this channel. I find this subject matter very interesting and important to understand.
Boss, I would love if you expanded on this video! Covering all the other bowlines and others like a stopper hitch, timber hitch, barrel hitch, catspaw etc, there are people taking their OS tests and the way you showed it was excellent! Love from Tongue point job corps!
a figure 8 on a bite is in the middle of a same size line. Looking at your cap at the beginning it looked like I was going to say it was a taught line hitch, glad I watched to the end. :)
Beautifully clear demonstration of the basic knots. I learned all these in the scouts then used them at sea. I was also taught how to tie a bowline single handed - you know, in case you fall down a crevasse while climbing and have broken your arm. Funnily enough, never needed that, but the muscle memory is still there 50-odd years later, so in the unlikely event...
proceeds to fall down the stairs into the basement and has to heave himself back up with one arm and a power cord. all while typing the comment I'm commenting on with the little toe of the right foot twisted front to back after tripping over the phone charger causing the fall.
I just need to add that I am a knot nerd , I need to be tying knots all the time and learning new knots and hitches everyday , right now I have a length of 3/8 Samson braid beside me , knots can save your life at sea or everyday
My grandfather was a merchant sailor back in the 1920s. He tried to teach me some basic knot tying when I was a kid. No matter how many times I tried he always referred to my knots as a “Chinese let go”.😂
The ol bosun I had (back in the day) had me carry a half fathom of line around in my pocket. When I was walking the deck or between watches I'd pull that line out and practice. Class 425
Comments from the UK. Twas strange watching you tie the bowline as you do it in reverse. Scouts etc. are taught that the rabbit runs out of the hole around the tree and back down again. The square knot is called a reef knot here. Thanks for the memories.
Marlinspike Seamanship is one of those things everyone should know, not just guys traveling on boats. Good stuff! Folks tend to not think of rope as a tool anymore, and that's sad. The best part is that after your line is worn out and can't be trusted to carry a load, you can turn it into mats and all sorts of other fun stuff.
Will the 7 Seas ever be the same without Joe's unique perspective on "life on the Ocean waves" eagerly awaiting the next instalments there Joe. Take care 'mate."
Great video the simple effective way you explained and demonstrated was great. Wish I had this when I was learning will be showing others this to help them. Why are lines called rope on land I honestly haven’t a clue on this one.
I love your videos, I just got my AB, currently on a tugboat in Alaska, curious who you sail for and what’s the pay like, and what’s your rotation like? Keep on keeping on
I sail for whatever jobs and rotations on the SIU boards fit my plans. As far as salary check my video about it ua-cam.com/video/Mc-f22mvC5I/v-deo.html .
Hey I just joined the union. Do you still think going to Piney Point and going to school is the best route to become a merchant marine? Thanks man your videos are awesome.
@70 i still have trouble tying my shoes but others will surely find this helpful. ship owners are probably too cheap, but one of those laser de-rust tools would beat the crap out of your needle scaler. they're expensive as hell but they eliminate the rust, so you get a clean surface to paint. ok, commercial is over.
This is a quite boring video for most people I would imagine. I absolutely loved it though! I have always been super intrigued with knots. I use the square knot all the time for connecting baling twine together. All of the other knots were super interesting!!
Here's one for ya Joe. (Not in the book). Tie a sheep shank. Grab the loops and pull. Instant Spanish Bowline. *Can be used in fashioning rescue harness.
7:25 Looks like you accidentally tied a "cow hitch" by changing direction on the second half-hitch Round turn and two half-hitches ties a clove hitch on the line. You go over the standing part then go over again. You went under therefore, made a cow hitch.

Thank you Joe. This is the best video I have found for these knots. I have wanted to learn how to tie knots for ever
this was very interesting, I always wondered about the types of knots
this is very well presented thank you. A part 2 on the most common line splices would be awesome!
Great video. This perspective makes it very easy to duplicate what you're doing.
Thanks Joe!
Joe, You're such a knotty sailor. 😀😀😀 Love your videos. Thanks.

Love knots❤ Been missing you. Over, under, around and thru my bowline mantra!
Today I learned to double the clove hitch and how to make a sheet bend into a double beckett! Fantastic video. Looking forward to the shorts as a review.
My grandpa had drawings of sailor knots on the back of his business cards and it's my most treasured memento from him 💗
Keep doing what you do brother you might not know it but you're helping a lot of people with these videos!

Excellent video Joe. Very handy.
I always had a feeling you were knotty, now we know for sure 😎
Thank you so much for this. My goal is to learn & use these knots so I don't forget when I need them.
Learn how to tie and use a Pruisk knot , It could save your life

Nice to see you back Joe, learned a lot tonight, atb from England
This video would have been awesome for my knots exam at a maritime academy 6 weeks ago
Thanks Joe 👍
Thank you so much for demonstrating. I have applied to join as a seaman and this was very helpful.
Such a good video. Very clever! Thank for these, will definitely bookmark to learn some!

OK, that's (some of) the knots - lashings in a future video?
Great guide, Joe!
Very nice! Great idea for an episode. Keep up the good work!

Hi joe All of your knots are the same ones i Leared in boy scouts back in 1968 😃😃😃
My grandfather was a merchant sailor back in the 1920s. He tried to teach me some basic knot tying when I was a kid. No matter how many times I tried he always referred to my knots as a “Chinese let go”.😂
It has been a while... Good to see a new Vlog from you
That was a great tutorial. Thanks Joe
The ol bosun I had (back in the day) had me carry a half fathom of line around in my pocket. When I was walking the deck or between watches I'd pull that line out and practice. Class 425
been wondering for the longest of times if there's a faster way to tie a bowline, thank you man
This is a great video, good job on the demonstrations. Can you show how to secure line to a cleat, like when you are tying off a boat to a dock?
I learned some knots in my training for firefighting. I still use a few knots regularly. I’m retired now.
Useful knowledge for a commercial sailor.
thank you very much, very instructive
Thanks Joe that was very imforative.
Welcome back!
Good job showing the applications too!
We need a splicing video, so I can get my UA-cam mate’s license 😂🫡
Comments from the UK.

Thanks for the demonstration, funny I just downloaded 3 books on knots and splicing, busy getting prepared for the sailing life.

Tanker stash starter kit engaged! 🥸

Right over left,
Left over right,
Makes a square knot
Tidy and tight! ☮️
Great lesson. I knew some of these when I lived in a mainly fishing community. And, No granny knots!
you just took me straight back to boy scouts!
I was a deck hand for a season on the water taxi here in Chicago. I sucked at knots...D'oh!
Finally i can... knot my shoes properly!
I use too use a Figure of Eight Knot for a fraying end of a line 😊
Ur hilarious!..I should have told u I was in the the Navy as well..
What about a rolling hitch? I've been sailing for 45 years and found it very useful
Nice shot of my terminal in Tampa! Thats tank 17 with the pelican in the background😂
.... well explained 👍👍👍
Application
Seeing them applied was really interesting.
Rare that people do that.
Just like math.
Good Stuff!!
That’s a good video
This is so great! Love this channel.
The one about the Carrick bend, as the rope doubled up as a figure of eight, as its very similar too that of a Carrick Bend Knot 😊
Hey Joe what do ya know? Where'd you go?!!
Mr Fanta passed away, unfortunately
@@asdsdjfasdjxajiosdqw8791 What happened?
I can't find any information anywhere on his passing at all
@@mkl0707 I think it's a troll.
I'm alive and well. On land. Busy working on new videos from latest voyages. Coming Soon!
what about the double bowline
and on a bite

Depends on your finances and availability to go through the whole program
Have you ever worked with anyone from tongue point job corps
Awesome!! Thanks !
A Sheet Bend is only once around, but what you had showed in your video was a Double Sheet Bend 😊
Very nice

He has unfortunately been confirmed deceased
@@asdsdjfasdjxajiosdqw8791 where is this confirmation
Hey Joe, are you going back to sea in the future, or are you moving on ?
I am still sailing. I have videos about my latest voyages coming soon! Keep an eye out.

Hat knot is a Fig-8 on a Bight.
Knots 🪢 are really incredible inventions! I can only imagine the genius that it took to create each one of them.

How does salt water effect ropes at sea?
It corrodes them after a while
@@JoeFranta ok, thanks.
I am going to insist that my Dominatrix view this very informative video. Thanks Joe.
How you get this result with subscribers and reviews?
bowline on a bight?
When you dock at WorldPort Los Angeles, beers on me, brother.
Is that a sheepshank on your hat?
I've seen a heavy s heavy chanel unraver a clove hitch without a halg hitch to secure it.
Haven’t seen videos from u in a while hope u are well, would love to know if u are still sailing and posting videos again soon?
Still sailing. New videos of my latest voyages are coming soon!
Similar too your Clove Hitch, you just take one more turn like a Clove Hitch and then it becomes a Rolling Hitch 😊
Do sailors use duct tape whippings?
do you have internet on the ships?
Yep
7:25
Looks like you accidentally tied a "cow hitch" by changing direction on the second half-hitch
Round turn and two half-hitches ties a clove hitch on the line.
You go over the standing part then go over again. You went under therefore, made a cow hitch.
helpful thanks Joe!
WHERE DID U GO JOE??
Currently travelling the country in my RV working on videos about my latest voyages. Keep an eye out for them soon!
