I tried it out for a few weeks to give you my thoughts, hands on and tips & tricks about this gimbal for BIG dslr and mirrorless. I come from a DJI ronin s, so it's a little comparison but yes, I finally moved to gimbals after all these years :)

    I have had 2 Feiyutech gimbals ... both for about 18 months. One works, an a2000, and an SPG phone gimbal. The SPG stopped working this month after using it 10-15 times. I think Feiyutech suffers from same thing most Chinese gear manufacturers do, lack of QC in the entire supply and manufacturing process. And their APP sucks. I might consider another of their gimbals after the product matures more. Good review and nice work on your video

    Thank you for a very honest review. I just got mine and just watching a few videos before I launch it. I did have a tough time mounting the arm for the remote/2nd handle - for some reason the holes did not match up quite right - I was worried I was going to strip the knob screw... we will see if I did when I remove it :O

    • @tomsodyssey
      @tomsodyssey  4 роки тому +1

      Hey there! You mean the 2 screws to mount it to the gimbal? Or the 1 screw that mounts the remote to the arm?
      The trick with the 2 screws is to get one in, turn it loosely in (dont tighten).
      That gives you enough room still to get the other in ;) ones both are in, tighten!
      (Yes I know this all sounds pretty double haha 😅)

    • @TheKjlongtine
      @TheKjlongtine 4 роки тому

      Yep - I did get them in and tight. Pretty easy to strip them out because the slight flaw in precision.

    Any ideas on hard-shelled cases for travel. Feiyutech seems to not provide an accessory case like the Ronin. I have the dual handgrip, gimbal essential kit that I would all like placed within the same case instead of having them separate.

      I’m not that home in the other brands, but I would say, look at your budget, and the featured you think are most usefull to you. Gimbals nowadays have a lot of usability & all these you say are pretty good. So whichever you choose is gonna be fine! That being said, the difference between them is in the details, so therefore, think about what you will be using them for :)

  • @carlos_pimentel
    @carlos_pimentel 4 роки тому

    Great review!!! Same thoughts over here, people over use them too much. Gimbals have their space and time to be used, mainly when you want to have a moving scene or sort of. But... and there's always a but, xD people just because they have a gimbal want to put moving scenes all the time and it becomes too boring... it certainly influences the creativity part of the creation process. I don't own a gimbal (and I would love to... Feiyutech, DJI, if you read this send me some stuff xD) so I'm used to go for the handheld, and the end results I get from it are by far my favourite.
    Always cool to help you out bro ;) keep them coming!

    Hey you deserved award for saying about OVERUSE... I'm wedding filmmaker for 27 years. I always tried to introduce some movement in limited possibilities like rushed unstaged weddings, either by locking ENG camera to body and slowly transfer weight from right to left leg (mimicking sliders before they even came to average user), or mimic dolly shot with collapsing one tripod leg, or slow zooms, ... or balance tripod just right, to carry it like steadycam. It was doable very smooth since cameras got optical stabilisation after 2000's. But now this gimbals came out in last decade... OMG everything CONSTANTLY flies around object. No piece for viewer. Also they just run and gun and gimbals produce nervous footage for being aggressively corrected. Regardless one still need some feeling. Yes, I hate overuse, but what about consumers?
    Than you mentioned too much work to calibrate. I remember having on test a very popular GlideCam "stedicam" and almost lost my nerves to calibrate it. Fiddly is mildly put. Original SteadyCam was of course poetry in comparison, but 10 times more expensive. In the end GlideCam produced marginally better shot at best than my balanced tripod method. But in my case I just readjusted ball head on tripod a bit, reposition LCD on handle, or something and had decent enough balance to make a walking shot I needed, in next moment I could put it down and had tripod or take camcorder in my hands and run. Handy. Internal stabilisation ironed out all vibrations and software fixed slow wobbling if needed. I never opted for Ronin or something since my camcorder was 4 kg, too costly, low end gimbals never was good other tan for gopro. But I always had Yi4K on top of my camcorder, stable enoughh already since carried on heavy camera. Also had good internal stabilisation.
    Let see what you find out of this AK4500... it looks promising, versatile and cheap. And strong enough and what I dreamed for 10 years ago, to be able to have "slider/crane/tripod/gimbal" device in one piece, plus remote and I can use large belt battery and LCD wile having camera alone on remote (total control on camera).
    Thank you for review.

      Hey Michael! Love your comment :) I think it’s just that a lot of people come into the Industry and think this is the “new normal”. But as you know, with 27 years in the running, it’s the experience that’s so much more important than the gear. With experience comes better equipment. However I think it’s also good for the experienced filmmakers to try out the new things that come out... I’ve seen a lot of veterans who keep stuck in their old ways and never really rediscover their style.
      Young and learn can learn so much from each other :)
      Btw let me know if you got one in the end, and good luck if you do! 😄🙌🏻

      @@tomsodyssey I certainly thinking how I will proceed after three years of creative break, when I dedicated to photography only. My old gear is old now, team separated. I own 4x HDV cameras and 2x fHD action cam and YI4K cam + 2x DSLR and vintage lenses.
      HDV camcorders are too big, too old, but with great zoom (33 - 650 mm equivalent) for conferences, where I can put external recorder on them, and shoot 7 hours without pause. Can't do it with any DSLR on market. Should I sell it for beans or not. Probably not.
      DSLR mania of Canon 5Dii and f1.2 lenses are passed thankfully, people started to appreciate they can recognise some background again and have normal video of ceremony, not some artstic pile of blur :) But I kinda think it had to be 4K sensor in 2020 for flexibility, just to use software stabilisation when needed and some reframing in the post. I tested Canon EOS C-100ii and while good camera and image, I could not adapt to "awkward" still camera hybrid, stepped iris (aperture), ISO that had to be well thought in advance (0.5 f-stop margin of error only, while at least 2 f-stops on HDV cameras I have), and not putting out 4K despite sensor. Also no autofocus or motor zoom on best lenses (only for cheap low end zoom lenses with add-on). Higher models of C-xxx cameras does not return investment these days on weddings.
      But after so many years they seem to made it again, the perfect reporter, prosumer, indy camera, XF705 - it have what it seems the best compromise sensor size of 1'', half the zoom of old model for that reason of bigger sensor (25-320 mm) which is OK. Half the weight of previous camera, 3 separate real lens dials, ... I was able to pull iris, focus and zoom at the same tiime with one hand. Try that with DLSR. I was surprised the format is still alive and Canon put effort in it.
      In the mean while I shot few small projects myself with action camera, phone, etc. I certainly search for other approaches too. Weddings can be cheaply budgeted so this kind of one man band gunning reminds me of my starts in 1994, and later having a S-VHS shoulder camcorder, giant tripod, shotgun, cable, 100W halogen light, camera case and tripod case and large tapes all on my body. Today we can go lighter and smaller, less intrusive to spectators.
      I always loved we sneak in hidden corners and use massive zooms, to produce multicamera, videos with decent blurred background and natural telephoto shots not "warped" closeups, not to nerve bride or groom, and they most often asked when we did all angles. Also I started with remote sound as simple as using dictaphones with external mic - cheap, LoFi but unimaginably better in large church than any competition.
      Yeah, I subscribed to you as I think you have sorted out what real quality is, to deliver the best in the customer interest, not necessary what he ask, but what he actually will love and appreciate more after a while. I started wedding music videos, the best of videos right since 2nd or 3th wedding (editing S-VHS tapes on local TV station at nights on professional gear), but never on behalf of original TV like full movie.
      This days there is a place for cranes like AK4500. I imagine I can use it for steady shots as well and it will follow my style well: 1 moving shot to 3 static. I can use all my described movements, but this time without hacks, much easier to achieve, most likely without post time consuming stabilisation... and I like be mixed in the crowd so people constantly cross the frame, SW steady have no clue what to lock on, also DLSR's have CMOS and to blurry background to lock stabilisation. A good capable gimbal which is than loaded at 50% weight is perfect for this.

      Would it help you get shots you want to do but can’t at the moment?
      Do you have projects that would profit from those shots?
      Do you want to build out these skills in your filmmaking toolbox, or do you have other skills that need working on first?

      Hey Laurence! Did you own a gimball before? If not, try each mode just walking straight lines & bringing in 1 extra movement (turn left,right, spin,...) at a time. It’s a learning process, but once you get the hang of how the gimbal (or any gimbal for that matter) moves, you can get every shot what you want ;)

      Like already said, this will probably depend on what you need! I don't like to use gimbals in the first place, but that's for my type of filmmaking. The AK4500 just feels more intuitive for me. And I'm saying this after buying the Ronin and using it 2 times, and having the AK4500 send to me and haven used it for atleast 20 shoots now. But again, for me mobility and ease of use are important. Just feel what your gut is telling you, and if the thing you get doesn't suit your needs, sell it and pick something else, that's how I roll 😄
