The thing that amused me and interested my about Azur Lane was just how spot-on the characterization of Enterprise was. A stubborn warrior who kept charging into battle before anyone thought she could possibly be recovered - and coming back from the dead with a vengeance.
It's genuinely crazy how they managed to write such a deep character with the premise of chibi ship girls and they managed to make the character feel like she's the actual ship. I honestly doubt any crewman of the enterprise would have an issue with azur lane's representation
@@PeachDragon_ I have to agree, her depiction in Azure Lane is dead-on with her real live counterpart. Running herself ragged in order to get into the fight as soon as possible, and rushing repair and refit to the limit was dead on to historical fact.
Many people may not know this, but on this day, October 25th back in 1944, saw a literal David vs Goliath. A small task force of destroyers and jeep carriers faced the Yamato and the rest of center force in it attempt to destroy the letye landing. It was this task force "Taffy 3" that faced ships 5 times their size, they stopped the Japanese from delivering a crushing defeat to the American liberation of the Philippines and the death of thousands of soldiers as the main American force of carriers was lead away with the remaining Japanese carriers. This was the Battle off Samar and the balls on those sailors were made of solid diamond
@@fluent4530 Yep and afterwards, one of the destroyer escorts that was involved, USS Samuel B Roberts, gave such an epic last stand that after she was sunk, she eventually became known as the "destroyer escort that fought like a battleship." Also of note during the battle was the destroyer USS Johnston, which blew the bow off of one of the Japanese heavy cruisers with one of her torpedoes.

The only survivor of VT 8 Ensign Gay had the best seat in the house viewing the entire destruction of the Kido Butai was a hero and was able to tell his story directly to Nimitz and Halsey from his hospital bed in Honolulu . He survived the war and lived a long life ! His request that his ashes be scattered over the site of the battle was honored and Ensign Gay was finally United with the rest of his Squadron, the perfect end to his story !
Sadly he was killed by the Japanese at Midway. The plane he was in was shot down and him and his pilot were picked up by a Japanese destroyer. After beating them and interrogating the two airmen, they tied shells to their feet and threw them overboard to drown. They did this because they were flying a dive bomber and their anger about the three ships that the Americans had hit.

Doolittle led an “F You” popgun air raid on a few wooden sheds and a part built warship. There was no way he could have expected to trigger horrendous reprisals that killed upwards of a million Chinese.

Minor correction on the Doolittle Raid. Hornet did not go to Virginia. The B-25's flew from Florida to California, landed at Alameda and were craned onto the Hornet. And as proof of concept a B-25 was test launched in Feb of 1942. Due to the early launch the bombers never would have made the landing fields and they ran out of gas and had to ditch. Doolittle and the planners of the raid made sure that the Emperors Palace WAS NOT to be bombed, and ordered the raiders as such.
The point about the Emperor's Palace not being bombed should have been in this video, it showed good strategic sense and to a certain extent respect for the position, they wanted to give a sucker punch not a throat chop.
Even the copyright strike can't stop the legendary story of the Big E from being covered in such awesome detail. Can't wait for Part 2 and that Strike Witch video you are working on.
Everything about how the Yorktown got to Midway to how it performed is just incredible. It's an incredible feat of engineering that deserves all the praise they receive.
yorktown out of the sister ship always has a place in my heart cause on how remarkable that was. nearly getting put out of actions it turns around and sail back in the fight while repairs were still underway

I am a US Navy veteran and I think it is a crime that this ship was not saved as a memorial for all time as a tribute to all who fought and died in the Pacific during WWII
That may be the tragic irony of her. She was one of the U.S. Navy's strongest ships, yet she was either too late, or simply forced to watch her fellow ships perish. So, you better believe hell was coming with Enterprise to the Pacific and other Axis powers. The seas ablaze. To avenge Pearl.

When I was in junior high (mid 70s) I did some book reports about WWII and when I read all about what this ship did I almost thought it was fiction. This ship got hammered and almost sunk so many times only to get repairs and upgrades incredibly fast and went right back out for more, that I could hardly believe it. It was and probably still is the most decorated US naval ship in history. It is really sad that they just scrapped this ship. It deserved a lot more than that in my opinion. Other ships have been kept as museums. the USS Constitution from the American revolution is still commissioned and kept in pristine shape. The USS Missouri is a museum (I had a tour of it in 4th grade while it was still in Bremerton, WA.) The Enterprise should have been kept for future generations to learn of this incredible ship and just how great it was.

To my mind, that's a far better tribute to a warship, than making them into a museum.

Take some girders and stuff to toss into the new namesake, but scrapping her was the dumbest idea, even above the sale and scrapping of the USS Barb. Park her in Pearl and the Japanese would flock to her just to put hands on the one that couldn't be put down.
Fun fact: in ww2, enterprise had 20 battle stars and the closest ship to match her record is uss New Jersey (big J) with only 19 battle stars! However, enterprise still has the most than New Jersey. It’s amazing how two different ships got the title, “the most decelerated warships”. And no I’m not counting USS Nicholas because it has 30 battle stars and that is just an overkill and considered to be unfair for Big E, right? Eh both New Jersey and Nicholas both served for decades in multiple wars. Along with that neither saw any real combat that mattered (meaning actually fighting in important battles) For a comparison it would be like taking Audie Murphy and a random career soldier and claiming that the career soldier is better. Remember ships are given battle stars for simple being present at a battle not for performance. This also not mentioning other award Enterprise got like the presidential and naval unit citations. Awards that are given for merit and not simply being present.
Tbf, NJ and Nicholas served longer than the Big E. If anything, the more comparable ones would be the USS San Diego (18 battle stars, though records say she only ever had 15) and the USS San Francisco (17 battle stars and even a Presidential Unit citation). Since those two were also in the Pacific for most of their lifetime. Hell, you can even include the USS North Carolina with 15 battlestars if you want to add a BB

I always found Drach's documentaries as a retelling of what happened, like an old war story. HAC has the reading of a telling of a old legend lost to time. Both good, but different.

Too many men in too little space just get in each other’s way leading to monumental Fups - Normally. Getting YorkTown back to sea was a stunning piece of project management.
That was a great line that came out and hit so suddenly, because it was not expected from that direction. And I certainly accept that definition of Canadians.
Hornet survived more than 6 bombs, 2 torps, 2 suicidal planes (in that time not kamikaze), lots of american ammo. Her faith was sealed when the japanese destroyers arrived. She sunk near Santa cruz islands. Yorktown manage to survive 3 torps and few bombs, her faith was sealed after the battle of Midway because of japanese submarine and that submarine sunk dd Hamman as well. They sunk near island of Midway after the battle. Enterprise shown Japan her fury and taste for revenge. She survived the war with 20 battlestars, but her faith was sealed after the war. She was scrapped. You shall be remembered. Mean while Uss Franklin lost most of her crew because of 2 bombs.

@@xer0143 money... Halsey was trying his best to get some money so they could make enterprise a floating museum. But he didnt get enough. They scraped her so the new aircraft carriers could rise. I am atleast glad that USS New Carolina is still floating. In the end i am glad that Enterprise now rests in peace.

I think that Enterprise needs a skill buff. The ship was a legend in real life and her in game abilities are just ok. Maybe a retrofit would help but still she needs better skills.
At the end of the Pacific war there were 3 ideas for how to deal with mainland Japan. One was your standard naval invasion consisting of marines and army personnel numbering upwards of 1 million men. Second was to drop the two atomic bombs the US had at the time and then offer an empty threat to Japan "Surrender or we drop more." The third plan that was proposed was to essentially cover as much of the island as possible, starting with major population centers, with Napalm and turn the whole island into a wasteland of ash.
@@lunartears6761 Exactly the first would have resulted in almost a million casualties it was estimated, and the biggest reason was they didn't want to have to split Japan with the Soviets, they needed to end the war quickly before Stalin could move his zerg force back east, no doubt pickup up more women/men and machinery to bolster its ranks along the way. LeMay was already getting flack for the third one with the fire storms they were creating in the major cities, like people who jumped into Tokyo bay to escape the flames were boiled alive the fire storms were so fierce, and it resulted in more civilian deaths than either of the atomic bombings; I think it was the most devastating bombing raid in human history, but don't quote me on that.
@@anydaynow01 -- Where does the idea that the 'Soviets were coming for Japan, America would have to split it with them!' come from? The Russian's had minimal amphibious capabilities, and the US actually launched Operation Hula to try and bolster their amphibious capabilities. Even with Project Hula, the Soviets only had ~35, ships that could actually 'invade' the Japanese home islands, which is no where near enough to pose any serious threat. Especially since ~30 of those recently added to their numbers through lend/lease and with minimal crew and training time. Add on top that the Soviets were slogging it out on the Kuril islands, the 'threat' of having to 'split Japan' was nowhere near anybodies radar. The Americans wanted the Soviet's help during an invasion, but couldn't get them the equipment, training, and manpower needed fast enough to make it viable. So, the Yalta Conference gave the Soviet Union the right to invade the southern Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, but not the Japanese home islands. Which is how things went down. A couple of high-ranking folks in Stalin's arena suggested invading Hokkaido, but diplomats, military officers, and politicians alike all opposed it citing the lack of ships and equipment, making it a suicide mission with no gain, and decided to focus on establishing a blockhead in Europe rather than chasing down Asian islands.
@@gnomish844 I’m pretty sure that is because the USSR had promised to provide soldiers if the rest of the Allies had decided on the mass invasion of mainland Japan which means that when Japan surrendered the Mainland would have to be split accordingly.

It’s not just about the history but who tells it and how it’s told. So thank you for making the same story interesting , humorous , sad and inspiring. But most of all thank you for helping us all remember these heroic men. They deserve to be honored and remembered forever!

I don't think you mentioned this but Enterprise scored first blood for the Americans on a Japanese submarine that was returning after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The dive bomber that sank the submarine was also the first (or last don't remember) to hit a carrier at Midway.
An American destroyer USS Ward on guard duty off Pearl Harbor scored first blood when it destroyed a Japanese mini sub an hour and half before the bombers rolled in. This wasn’t recognised at the time as the Pearl naval commander wouldn’t believe Japanese submarines were operational both inside and outside Pearl Harbor. The one Ward hit was discovered with a shell hole through the hull post war. Another of the minisubs fired two torpedoes during the air attack Inside the harbor and it’s wreck was found later in the war after it was scuttled by its crew.
USS Ward was the first vessel to score a Japanese kill. 2 hours before the attack on Pearl Harbor, USS Ward successfully sank a Japanese midget submarine.
As I listen to this, often walking about with earphones, I am drifting into a place where I think that I am listening to a Homeric Bard who is relating the tale I well know of the heroic siege of Troy. I story I know well enough to narrate myself and yet the Bard's variations in words, cadence, inflections and accents all contribute to a timeless enjoyment; a story not just of forefathers but of a father and an almost palpably recent past as well as the mist of history. Nautilus was the absolute chad of Midway with sneaking her way into an entire task force, attempting to attack, evading a destroyer while attacking again, and escaping in one piece. Her crew must have had balls of pure platinum for that.
And they did that knowing that 9/10 of their torps were going to fail to detonate. Just to bet if they could land the 1/10 odd torp and give the enemy a bloody nose.
WW2 submariners specially and submariners in general are some of the most inventive, aggressive (in the tactical sense) and perhaps crazy sailors you'll ever meet.
I've asked before, and I'll likely ask it again: How much difference would it have made had the Japanese broken off diplomatic relations with the United States a full day before Pearl Harbor was hit, as intended? Basically, how much difference would there have been between the intended surprise attack and the sneak attack that actually happened?
No difference. They never intended to break off diplomatic relations the day before, it was a couple hours before. However, breaking off negotiations is not a declaration of war. The Japanese never intended to declare war before the attack, surprise was the entire point.
Completely unrelated to most of the video, but your comment on being patriotic about the ANZACS struck me. As an American, I find that I feel a kinship with the other English speaking parts of the world, so I'm always excited and proud to learn about the exploits of men such as these.

One of my former DIVOs was on the Enterprise (CVN-65). He regularly told us nukes that one of the things he hated on the ship was the frequency at which the valve handles on the secondary steam system would shoot off due to poor packing on the valves. He often told us “transiting engine room was a game of sudden dodge and weave. Either from a flying wrench or valve handle. If you got hit by one, it was a badge of honor.”
Me: “only if it was the same for Yamato (54:38 and 1:18:50)… because it wasn’t… and yet you sank it… now… you are waiting for the return in service as a Ford class carrier!”

Thank you for honoring the hideous sacrifice of the Chinese civilian population who suffered so horribly after the Doolittle raid. My Dad was a Marine Corps dive bomber pilot in the South Pacific, and he loved the Australian people (he got leave there once, after Guadalcanal). As a married Catholic Minnesota farm boy, though, he was a little shocked by how ... friendly some of the ladies of Australia wanted to be towards him. He eventually concluded it was just gratitude on their part, due to the peril Australia had been from the Japanese.
And they didn’t use an encrypted signal. They used the telegraph cable they knew the Japanese couldn’t intercept to tell the outpost to transmit the spoof message. So very sneaky.

The only survivor of VT 8 Ensign Gay had the best seat in the house viewing the entire destruction of the Kido Butai was a hero and was able to tell his story directly to Nimitz and Halsey from his hospital bed in Honolulu . He survived the war and lived a long life ! His request that his ashes be scattered over the site of the battle was honored and Ensign Gay was finally United with the rest of his Squadron, the perfect end to his story !

Sadly he was killed by the Japanese at Midway. The plane he was in was shot down and him and his pilot were picked up by a Japanese destroyer. After beating them and interrogating the two airmen, they tied shells to their feet and threw them overboard to drown. They did this because they were flying a dive bomber and their anger about the three ships that the Americans had hit.

Minor correction on the Doolittle Raid. Hornet did not go to Virginia. The B-25's flew from Florida to California, landed at Alameda and were craned onto the Hornet. And as proof of concept a B-25 was test launched in Feb of 1942.
Due to the early launch the bombers never would have made the landing fields and they ran out of gas and had to ditch.
Doolittle and the planners of the raid made sure that the Emperors Palace WAS NOT to be bombed, and ordered the raiders as such.
The point about the Emperor's Palace not being bombed should have been in this video, it showed good strategic sense and to a certain extent respect for the position, they wanted to give a sucker punch not a throat chop.

When I was in junior high (mid 70s) I did some book reports about WWII and when I read all about what this ship did I almost thought it was fiction. This ship got hammered and almost sunk so many times only to get repairs and upgrades incredibly fast and went right back out for more, that I could hardly believe it. It was and probably still is the most decorated US naval ship in history. It is really sad that they just scrapped this ship. It deserved a lot more than that in my opinion. Other ships have been kept as museums. the USS Constitution from the American revolution is still commissioned and kept in pristine shape. The USS Missouri is a museum (I had a tour of it in 4th grade while it was still in Bremerton, WA.) The Enterprise should have been kept for future generations to learn of this incredible ship and just how great it was.

Take some girders and stuff to toss into the new namesake, but scrapping her was the dumbest idea, even above the sale and scrapping of the USS Barb. Can you imagine how huge a tourist attraction the old girl would be to international tourists? Park her in Pearl and the Japanese would flock to her just to put hands on the one that couldn't be put down.
Fun fact: in ww2, enterprise had 20 battle stars and the closest ship to match her record is uss New Jersey (big J) with only 19 battle stars! However, enterprise still has the most than New Jersey. It’s amazing how two different ships got the title, “the most decelerated warships”.
And no I’m not counting USS Nicholas because it has 30 battle stars and that is just an overkill and considered to be unfair for Big E, right?

Eh both New Jersey and Nicholas both served for decades in multiple wars. Along with that neither saw any real combat that mattered (meaning actually fighting in important battles) For a comparison it would be like taking Audie Murphy and a random career soldier and claiming that the career soldier is better. Remember ships are given battle stars for simple being present at a battle not for performance.
This also not mentioning other award Enterprise got like the presidential and naval unit citations. Awards that are given for merit and not simply being present.

Since those two were also in the Pacific for most of their lifetime. Hell, you can even include the USS North Carolina with 15 battlestars if you want to add a BB

I gotta say the Sisters of the Yorktown-class, Hornet, Yorktown and Enterprise were the Deadllist Warships of WWII against the Japanese

It took three knockout blows to bring down Yorktown.
Hornet survived more than 6 bombs, 2 torps, 2 suicidal planes (in that time not kamikaze), lots of american ammo. Her faith was sealed when the japanese destroyers arrived. She sunk near Santa cruz islands. Yorktown manage to survive 3 torps and few bombs, her faith was sealed after the battle of Midway because of japanese submarine and that submarine sunk dd Hamman as well. They sunk near island of Midway after the battle. Enterprise shown Japan her fury and taste for revenge. She survived the war with 20 battlestars, but her faith was sealed after the war. She was scrapped. You shall be remembered.
Mean while Uss Franklin lost most of her crew because of 2 bombs.

I think that Enterprise needs a skill buff. The ship was a legend in real life and her in game abilities are just ok. Maybe a retrofit would help but still she needs better skills.

At the end of the Pacific war there were 3 ideas for how to deal with mainland Japan. One was your standard naval invasion consisting of marines and army personnel numbering upwards of 1 million men. Second was to drop the two atomic bombs the US had at the time and then offer an empty threat to Japan "Surrender or we drop more." The third plan that was proposed was to essentially cover as much of the island as possible, starting with major population centers, with Napalm and turn the whole island into a wasteland of ash.
And after seeing the large ovens and living skeletons in the forests of Europe, the Americans wanted no part of the last idea, or even the first.😳
@@lunartears6761 Exactly the first would have resulted in almost a million casualties it was estimated, and the biggest reason was they didn't want to have to split Japan with the Soviets, they needed to end the war quickly before Stalin could move his zerg force back east, no doubt pickup up more women/men and machinery to bolster its ranks along the way. LeMay was already getting flack for the third one with the fire storms they were creating in the major cities, like people who jumped into Tokyo bay to escape the flames were boiled alive the fire storms were so fierce, and it resulted in more civilian deaths than either of the atomic bombings; I think it was the most devastating bombing raid in human history, but don't quote me on that.
@@anydaynow01 -- Where does the idea that the 'Soviets were coming for Japan, America would have to split it with them!' come from? The Russian's had minimal amphibious capabilities, and the US actually launched Operation Hula to try and bolster their amphibious capabilities. Even with Project Hula, the Soviets only had ~35, ships that could actually 'invade' the Japanese home islands, which is no where near enough to pose any serious threat. Especially since ~30 of those recently added to their numbers through lend/lease and with minimal crew and training time. Add on top that the Soviets were slogging it out on the Kuril islands, the 'threat' of having to 'split Japan' was nowhere near anybodies radar. The Americans wanted the Soviet's help during an invasion, but couldn't get them the equipment, training, and manpower needed fast enough to make it viable. So, the Yalta Conference gave the Soviet Union the right to invade the southern Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, but not the Japanese home islands. Which is how things went down.
A couple of high-ranking folks in Stalin's arena suggested invading Hokkaido, but diplomats, military officers, and politicians alike all opposed it citing the lack of ships and equipment, making it a suicide mission with no gain, and decided to focus on establishing a blockhead in Europe rather than chasing down Asian islands.
@@gnomish844 I’m pretty sure that is because the USSR had promised to provide soldiers if the rest of the Allies had decided on the mass invasion of mainland Japan which means that when Japan surrendered the Mainland would have to be split accordingly.

I don't think you mentioned this but Enterprise scored first blood for the Americans on a Japanese submarine that was returning after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The dive bomber that sank the submarine was also the first (or last don't remember) to hit a carrier at Midway.
An American destroyer USS Ward on guard duty off Pearl Harbor scored first blood when it destroyed a Japanese mini sub an hour and half before the bombers rolled in. This wasn’t recognised at the time as the Pearl naval commander wouldn’t believe Japanese submarines were operational both inside and outside Pearl Harbor. The one Ward hit was discovered with a shell hole through the hull post war.
Another of the minisubs fired two torpedoes during the air attack Inside the harbor and it’s wreck was found later in the war after it was scuttled by its crew.

I've asked before, and I'll likely ask it again: How much difference would it have made had the Japanese broken off diplomatic relations with the United States a full day before Pearl Harbor was hit, as intended? Basically, how much difference would there have been between the intended surprise attack and the sneak attack that actually happened?
No difference. They never intended to break off diplomatic relations the day before, it was a couple hours before. However, breaking off negotiations is not a declaration of war. The Japanese never intended to declare war before the attack, surprise was the entire point.
Maybe some more shot down planes and fewer casualties but the same end result.

Sometime in the middle of the war it became Enterprise vs Japan. I can't wait for the conclusion. Looking forward to the Battle of Leyte Gulf and Operation Magic Carpet. Enterprise's final tour of duty. Plus a brief statement about majority of her steel being used to build the first nuclear powered aircraft carrier. And the only carrier of her class. The USS Enterprise CVN-65.
Only the porthole of CV(N)-6 were used the the CVN-65. The majority of the steel was sold off wholesale. Much of it was purchased by General Electric.

One of my former DIVOs was on the Enterprise (CVN-65). He regularly told us nukes that one of the things he hated on the ship was the frequency at which the valve handles on the secondary steam system would shoot off due to poor packing on the valves. He often told us “transiting engine room was a game of sudden dodge and weave. Either from a flying wrench or valve handle. If you got hit by one, it was a badge of honor.”

I think if any ship in history deserved the epithet "Queen of the Seas" the USS Enterprise CV-6 should have a claim to it among her many other names she earned.
My understanding is the airgroup crews for Akagi Kaga and Soryu survived midway mostly intact, ie they got off their burning carriers.

The B-25s of Doolittle's raid did not fly in a formation to attack Tokyo. Each plane proceeded, individually, to their targets across Japan.
Thank you for honoring the hideous sacrifice of the Chinese civilian population who suffered so horribly after the Doolittle raid.
My Dad was a Marine Corps dive bomber pilot in the South Pacific, and he loved the Australian people (he got leave there once, after Guadalcanal). As a married Catholic Minnesota farm boy, though, he was a little shocked by how ... friendly some of the ladies of Australia wanted to be towards him. He eventually concluded it was just gratitude on their part, due to the peril Australia had been from the Japanese.

And they didn’t use an encrypted signal. They used the telegraph cable they knew the Japanese couldn’t intercept to tell the outpost to transmit the spoof message. So very sneaky.
