In Norse mythology, a fylgja (Old Norse: [ˈfylɡjɑ], plural fylgjur [ˈfylɡjuz̠]) is a supernatural being or spirit which accompanies a person in connection to their fate or fortune. The word fylgja means "to accompany" similar to that of the Fetch in Irish folklore. It can also mean "afterbirth of a child" meaning that the afterbirth and the fylgja are connected. In some instances, the fylgja can take on the form of the animal that shows itself when a baby is born or as the creature that eats the afterbirth. In some literature and sagas, the fylgjur can take the form of mice, dogs, foxes, cats, birds of prey, or carrion eaters because these were animals that would typically eat such afterbirths.
Other ideas of fylgjur are that the animals reflect the character of the person they represent, akin to a totem animal. Men who were viewed as a leader would often have fylgja to show their true character. This means that if they had a "tame nature", their fylgja would typically be an ox, goat, or boar. If they had an "untame nature" they would have fylgjur such as a fox, wolf, deer, bear, eagle, falcon, leopard, lion, or a serpent.
The animal fylgja is said to appear in front of its owner, often in dreams, and offer portents of events to come. As such it is a representation of the future itself, not the character of a person. Like a person's fate the fylgja is not changeable, nor can it improve or act on its own.
Fylgjur may also "mark transformations between human and animal" or shape shifting. In Egil's Saga, there are references to both Egil and Skallagrim transforming into wolves or bears, and there are examples of shape shifting in the Saga of King Hrolf Kraki, where Bodvar Bjarki turns into a bear during a battle as a last stand. These transformations are possibly implied in the saga descriptions of berserkers who transform into animals or display bestial abilities.
Fylgjur usually appear in the form of an animal or a human and commonly appear during sleep, but the sagas relate that they could appear while a person is awake as well, and that seeing one's fylgja is an omen of one's impending death. However, when fylgjur appear in the form of women, they are then supposedly guardian spirits for people or clans (ættir). According to Else Mundal, the women fylgja could also be considered a dís, a ghost or goddess that is attached to fate.
Gabriel Turville-Petre cites multiple instances where an evil wizard or sorcerer's fylgja is a fox, because the image is sly and hiding something, or an enemy's fylgja is a wolf. In The Story of Howard the Halt [Hárvarðar saga Ísfirðings], the character Atli has a dream about eighteen wolves running towards him with a vixen as their leader. As it turns out, the dream presages that Atli will be attacked by an army with a sorcerer at the front.
Both Andy Orchard and Rudolf Simek note parallels between the concept of the female guardian hamingja-a personification of a family's or individual's fortune-and the fylgja. An example of such an occurrence would be in Gisli Surrson's Saga where the main character, Gisli, is visited by two beautiful women, one who is trying to bring good fortune and one that is trying to edge him towards violence. These two women could represent the women ancestors of Gisli's family ties, such as the ties between his wife Aud and his sister Thordis, relating to the idea of the Hamingja and Dís.
I got some very interesting results. I used my Great Grandfather's old traditional Norwegian Hunting knife. He was Norwegian(100%). On the handle there is a picture of a Reindeer pulling a sled with a man on it. I did the ritual two times, and both time the napkin fell off on Reindeer. I got chills when I remembered there's a Reindeer on the knife handle
My only memory from when I was very young was me and a cat sitting on a porch while it was raining. I thought it was a real memory but it was just a dream according to my mother. The memory is so strong and vidid. The cat was just sitting there with me, it felt like a brother or a sister.
I would really want to see a part 2 when u talk about dreams
Surely... and you don't need to disparage hippies. We get enough of that in America. Say New Age Hippy at least 😄

I would also like to see this video.

I'm not into the magic stuff but I still really want to learn about it. The magic stuff is really why I've subscribed because you're more down-to-earth about it than most thank you
I think we're probably similar. These days, "magic" has loads of connotations and practices that mostly I think are bunk, made to sell to wannabe witches who dream of the old Bewitched TV show. Norse spiritual practices, minus the popular "bind runes", "rune readings", and "spells" (all modern bunk IMO), but focused on lore that includes seidhr, galdr, and spiritual herbal craft, would be VERY refreshing and interesting. Listening to Satanist-inspired followers of Edred Thorsson or "Wiccatru" personal gnosis junk makes me want to smack them in the head.
Would love a private group if you are more comfortable sharing "non-historical" subjects there!
Same would love to know the dream method.

Yes, absolutely.

Thanks for recommending "The Seed of Yggdrasil" in one of your videos. I bought it about a month ago and I'm not even half way through it because it's so dense with information, but it has easily been one of the best books about the old beliefs that I've read so far. Maria's interpretations and speculations about the stories are super interesting and I think ring true in a lot of cases.
I found out that my Spirit Animal, Fylgja/Folgerin was a Bobcat long ago. First by living with a Native family. The father was an Ndn doctor. Then from my dreams.
I have read about that method. I add that to my book. Nice seeing it. Ty.
I love your content man, keep doing what you’re doing it’s really amazing
Yes very interested. Dream time work is super active for me at night but also during the day. I have to try this. Thank you
I would be really interested in how you can summon your spirit animal in our dreams!
Me too.
Here's the thing--you probably already have and just forgot or blew it off because you've been trained to ignore it. Just like past life memories. We are trained to believe that they are "foreign" memories, that you were a "different" person. Your body was different, but you are still the same person, just in a different situation, body etc.
People actually DO remember but because your beliefs and behaviors are no different than they were in the past it doesn't "seem" different. You are still YOU, no matter where you are at. You don't become a different person just because you went to Hawaii, put on some shorts and a flowered shirt. That's what screws people up with plastic surgery.
Bottom line, the ritual itself means nothing if your spirit doesn't ring with it. Your rituals belong to YOU.Your spirit rings with its own tones, and you have to communicate with the extended realms using your personal "tonal voice". That's why there is no such thing as centralized "viking religion". Something that was created individually cannot be reconstructed "catholic-style" for the masses. That's like saying 'if I sing and dance in my underwear, it makes me Madonna'. You can't find your internal by manipulating the external. That's "christianization" training.
Your spirit animal is there, always has been and you keep ignoring it because it doesn't come packaged the way consumer culture tells you. That's cowardice; and you will be shown the "ones that walk with you" only when you have bravery. Not aggression, power, bravado, ego but real bravery. Sometimes it's as simple as not lying to yourself.
Some times it takes time to find that certain spot, or event-- to remember that special time and the dream that followed, however you were shown. Sometimes people stew in so much ego and cowardice that they will never see what has been with them all along.
When I was 16 I had a dream of a large person coming from the sky almost looked like it was in a bird costume but then it transformed into a giant bird , hawk I think? We started dancing. I will never forget that dream
@@Boudicaisback That is a spirit dream!!! Good job! Shapeshifter. Joyful, playful spirit but with "vision". Take it from there!
@@baldrickt.adder-slayer287 I have sooo many dreams I will never forget. In my teen years I always saw the future. I even met my children before they were conceived. I used to be really talented at lucid dreaming as well. Now as an adult I cant seem to do it but I still look forward to dreaming every night. Ahh I could go on and on. I love dreaming.
Thank You ! was wondering about this just yesterday... ⚡🔨⚡
Thank you for this video.
3:09 I am really, truly, very interested in this sort of thing.
Mine is Wolf 🐺... He's with me always.
Had the chance to see one in a park recently and from all the people there, he immediately came outside, ran and laid down in front of me with his back facing towards me (sign of security). The feeling that I felt was something that I had never felt before, something primitive and deep. I cannot describe it better but it felt like we were one entity. When I remember it I feel like crying...
As he said in the video: sure it is. Because thats what you want it to be. You proberly just ate lunch and smelled good to it. Also, you sound like those basic hippie bitches when you almost praise yourself and makes it sound you are special and chosen. Try the knife Thing, but let the first 10 animals you try, be farm animals before you move on to all the "cool" animals like wolf, bear and eagle. You surely land on chicken or cow or something if you try this.
You're American right?
I thought I was the only one with this 🐺. I understand what you saying 100%.
I would recommend meditation. Light six candles around a mirror in a darkened room and stare into the reflection of the mirror. You can say a few words about wanting to meet your Fetch to set the intention etc. then stare into your own eyes until it’s fuzzy. Your fetch may or may not appear but over time it should work. Also, this is a ritual from traditional witchcraft. Traditional craft has a lot of Anglo Saxon lore built into it. So not Scandinavian nor entirely historical, but an effective way of contacting your animal soul self.
Sounds interesting. Is the position of the mirror important? on the ground with candles around? or standing. Thanks!
the mirror is on the ground with the candles making a circle around the mirror. But having the mirror on the wall and lighting candles in front of it should also work. It’s mainly about your intention when you begin the ritual. The darkened room with candles lit should help you get into a trance like state. I hope this helps!
DISCLAIMER: DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU ARE PRONE TO EPILEPTIC SEIZURES
When I was 15, I dreamt I rode a red deer stag into a deep cave where an entire herd of red deer waited. I knew these were humans in deer form. I found my Tribe. I've often wondered if the red deer is my fylgja so I'll try this. I'm 60 now so the impact of that dream has been with me a long time. I'm also, until a couple of years ago, from the Scottish Highlands (crofting so you're right about the "peasant" though I wouldn't say I was entirely domesticated...we aren't all sheep ;) ) but there, red deer outnumber people and I encountered them in "real" life daily. Also my trade in life was a self employed traditional animal hide tanner, including deerhides. Now watch me try this and get my most hated creature ever, the spider...:/
Oh ps, in Celtic folklore (correct me if I'm wrong but also in Norse?) there's an ancient tradition of young warriors being sewn into bull or deerhides for a specific number of days and nights, I believe as a form of sensory deprivation in order to seek out wisdom and entities through dream and hallucination. When the warrior emerged, he'd have gained Otherworld knowledge of his own particular powers but also encounters with other beings, mostly animals. It *is* documented in some of the Old Irish and Scottish texts and archaeological evidence has been found that has thrown up burials wrapped in bull, horse or deerhide in the same manner, which would indicate a Journeying rite of passage, just in case folks are thinking it's new age bullshit I'm talking here. ;)
If you dream it its possible it's one of your sprit animal's.
Very interesting 🤔 thanks for sharing 🎉
Very interesting channel, thanks to share all this information; it's really hard to find hystorical information that don't mix with modern esoteric things. A big greeting from Argentina!

Morning fella, luv n stuff from Tottenham
Only yourself can really know what your Fylgja is, but i think its worth mentioning...
The wolf Fylgja, is two sides of the same coin. Both loyal companion and savage beast. Both strategic Alpha and single-minded Omega.
For me, personally, i recommend visualizing the animal that you resonate with, but instead visualizing each and every attribute and behaviour in the natural world that the animal expresses. Its very easy to be decieved in this era, it is quite literally the era of deception but like the rune mannaz teaches us, follow your intuition and not your ego, and you'll be okay...
And, for the record, im not Wise or have a lifetime of expereince with runes and the gods, only about 4/5 years. so my words are my own, make of that what you will.
alpha and omega are human constructs, and don't exist in wolf hierarchies. the "alphas" are simply the breeding pair (mom and dad) and the "omega" is the pack member who keeps everyone together through play and submission. packs are family groups, of mother and father and children. they rarely have outsiders in them.
In the native culture, I have the wolf, but this was a long time ago I don't know if it is really a guardian spirit, a cricket landed on me just a few minutes ago. my real name in the Egyptian cartouche contains two vultures
You should only reveal your spirit animal to someone you absolutely trust if not keep it to yourself at least that's the way I was taught.
I would be interested to hear what you have to say about spirit animals and our dreams.
Would very much like to know more on this process.
In norse sagas people didnt dream about their fylgjas, but about the fylgjas of other people. In Hervarar Saga, for example, Angantyr dreams of the fylgja of Hialmar and his men (Hialmar's was an eagle and his men's were birds) that portended Angantyr's death on his duel with Hialmar. In other sagas the same pattern is repeated, another example of this are the dreams of swedish queen Ingerd, where she saw a pack of wolves led by a lion and a bear which were gothic king Rolf and danish king Ingiald with his troops
Very good. I forgot about a couple of those. Fylgja comes up in the actual persons dreams alot more in the later folk tales. And some of the heroic sagas as well
All about the magic side and would love to have a private group to discuss!
Very interesting. I’ll have to give it a try one day. I can definitely say that I do not believe mine is a bear or wolf. I really like horses and owls, so that’d be cool if it was one of those. But, mine would probably be a goat or something. Lol.
I have a friend who claims she grew up with a cat in her room. The family does not have a cat, and she is the only one who sees it. It had no name, she just called it "natta katt" (good night cat). She was so stubborn about this cat, so her parents started saying "natta katt" (good night cat) when they left the room after saying good night. It is her roommate who told us about the cat. He thought it was incredibly funny and sweet, because she still says "natta katt" (good night cat), even though she no longer sees the cat. Could it be her Fylgja?
Det høres sånn ut!
Would love a private group!!! You should think bout writing a book!,
Skulle vara intressant med en privat grupp med lite andra videos som du pratade om där =) Intressant video!
I dream of a red fox a lot. In my dreams, I often get lost lol whether it be in a forest, castle, or the back rooms. And whenever I start to be lost and thinking I will never escape, I will always see a red fox 🤷🏼♀️ he’s always so vibrant and calm and leads me out of danger.
I would love to join a private group to learn some more in depth aspects to Norse Paganism if it is something you are comfortable doing.
Public or private group I really don't care. 😊
I had a surgery 5 years ago and while the docs were saving my life I didn't see the tunnel with the bright light at the end but was walking around in a very brightly lit house with a buncha funny, playful monkeys around me. And then a guy showed up and said, it was time for me to go, party's over. Literally kicked me out. And through the woods I had to walk back to the hospital. Waking up I was so freakin tired like I would've really walked 50 miles, at least.
So that's my story.
I know what my animal its definitely a wolf as seen in my dream I seen a couple times actually love your video btw
Likte kanelen din, Subscribed ⚔️ hilsen fra Stavanger!
Nydelig by! :) Jeg hadde kjaereste fra Ryfylke noen aar siden
Would very much like to be a part of this private group.
I started with the coolest animals I could think of and got the Gorilla, pretty neat
YES, a private group would be awesome
Please do a video on the boar berzerker it's called Svinfylking in the Celtic world I don't hear much people talking about it thanks
I tried this a few times, and my fylgja is apparently either a gerbil, a guppy, or a pigeon. How many more tries do I get?
Also, I love that you used the illustration from the Fylgja card from Magic: The Gathering.
My animal is a Snake bro. I felt it, I saw it, I lived it, I am the snake. Thor confirmed this for me, I felt the electricity in the air and on my skin and flowing through me. The visions of tails and slithering bodies were everywhere. I am the snake.
When I was a Freshmen in high school my Dean said I was like the wolf, living in the now. I think it bothered him that I smiled when he said that and mind you I was an Atheist at the time and despised all religions. I didn't even know people still believed and worshipped the old ways at the time and didn't find out until I was much much older.
PLEASE do a private group. I would love to hear about your hippidy dippidy thoughts too lol.
Will try.🍻
Please tell us about the dream method ide love to know I think dream walking is one of my strongest "gifts" out of those we humans have
In Italy we call it "famiglio". I met mine during a trance. The usual meaning of the word indicates a witch's "guardian spirit and assistant", but everyone can have one and most people just never know it. Some of us give that title to our pets, too, but that's mostly an inside joke.
This might sound a bit selfish but as a Brit I am happy England got invaded Norwegian’s shaped us pretty much made us and for that I am grateful
Domesticated peasant. Funny but accurate. So, I had been thinking about this recently...spirit animals. My thoughts are that we do not really have one. We manifest different animals as aspects of ourselves and where we are at in the moment. It can be looked at like a totem pole. What animal are we manifesting as we move up and down the pole, or energies, reflecting on what is needed in our circumstance. We are fluid beings, always changing. I am a different person at work than I am at home or out in the woods. It seems that my animal spirit should change too. I need the cow at work, the horse at home, and maybe a good dog on the trail. I can't say this is accurate. Just an idea.
that isn't at all how a totem pole works
@@yippeeflowers Thanks Hal. I would love your teaching me how a totem pole does work. But, I wasn't explaining a totem pole, but rather our ability to move through spectrums of strengths and abilities that we desire to manifest at any given time.
Mines deer. The deer show me the path and I run with a Stag in my dream. I call it a calling back to the Highlands. Crazy thing is I've seen what is going to happen in Glencoe during my stay there. so I'm waiting and looking. Then it will happen the dream unfolds. If you've ever had a Stag run 3 feet behind you, you'll know that sound but may not see the Stag when you look around, it's already in the woods.
Spirit animal? Cheeky lad! 😂 There's a lot of really interesting lore on fylgjas, for sure. Sometimes animal, sometimes human, sometimes ancestral, sometimes personal. I'd be interested in your dream-summoning technique, for sure, and people think we heathens are wacky or hippies anyway. 😂 I think I've seen my ancestral fylgja once, when I was 6 yrs old and did something dumb that could have gotten myself injured or killed - a woman in white pushed me out of danger, and my parents insisted they saw nothing, so for decades I thought it was just imaginary. I've also dreamed several times of a small s
LOL, I've tried 3 times now to edit this, and it seems my fylgja doesn't want me to reveal it, so... it gets what it wants.
So basically human is your spirit animal.
@@TheAveragePainter In the lore, fylgja can appear in different ways. Ancestral fylgja often appear as women, and are protector spirits of your line. Personal fylgja often appear as a specific animal, and they are considered an aspect or part of your soul. The soul of a human is complex and multi-part in old Norse lore, parts of it separating and going their own ways after death; other parts can go on spiritual journeys, if you know how (according to the lore). "Spirit Animal" has modern connotations that don't exactly fit what the old Norse meant.
@@johnd5574I just tried to be funny :(
@@TheAveragePainter In your first reply, you had no emote, nothing to indicate humor. But ok. Whatevs.
Thank you SOOO much.... I've been looking for sources on this. It'll be interesting to try out. Did Germanic tribes also believe in such as a fylgja?
We don't know. No sources to confirm it.............But I think they for sure did :)
So I just found out about your channel my dad told me about you and I just did this and I went through a list of animals and my blade showed on wolf I did it exactly how you said which it makes sense because the only animal I have ever seen in a dream was a wolf I have never seen any other animal in my dreams before
Totems, daemons, familiars and the like are one of my favorite subjects of esotericism.

I think, at one point at least, my spirit animal was a hedgehog. Late one night I was cycling home from a friend's house when I saw a hedgehog in the road, I picked it up and put it in the hedge (it's a hedgehog after all). Anyway, after doing so I carried on cycling along when a car came around the corner on the wrong side of the road. If I hadn't stopped to get the hedgehog out of the road I would have been hit head on (and the hedgehog would probably have been squished too) I firmly believe we saved each others lives.
tbh imo - be patient untill it comes to you, especially if you are still very young (i was in my late 30s when badger came to me - in dreams - but what do i know? maybe there is a way to force it? but i was allright with waiting - cause that's how *my* spirituality works - the only things that are REAL for me, are the things i experience - not the things you can read about, or hear about. It has to be ME EXPERIENCING) and there can be more than one animal/creature/being.
i dont think this knife thing does work - as you said you got different results. so that cant be the right way. traditions are there to be broken - its all about the guts, intuition, vibing with nature....

I had an extremely vivid dream about my old primary school was on fire and in front of that was a lion laying down, behind the lion laying down was a bird in a bush ( cant remember what kind of bird but it has some blue and green coloring mixed in with grayish) next to them a fox. Another dream I had about an angry bull chasing me upstairs in an abandoned building several stories high. It would be confusing if you had to know which one was spirit animal. Is there a certain way it would come to you in a dream?

Great vid! I tried this a bunch of times but got different results and now I'm pretty confused. What does it mean? Do I not have a spirit animal?
What are you wrapping the blade in?
If they come to you in a dream, my fylgja is a fox. I still have a vivid memory of a fox in a dream as a kid who would attack me when I attempted to enter a barn I want to explore as though to keep me from entering.
If we’re referring as “more powerful ways to bring your fylgja to you in a dream” to psychedelics and a trip then I have seen mine.. otherwise I was just tripping
