There's actually another detail I like in the game that is associated with Grizzco. There's an alley that leads to the table turf area and there's a bunch of Grizzco boots and gloves drying on spokes and from laundry lines in the alley. Definitely adds to the jank of Grizzco that they can't keep all there laundry inside their building. Idk I just really like it 🙂

Yes! I love that detail so much! The setup is amazingly chaotic. Now that you mention it, the Grizzco office doesn’t have a dryer, so that totally makes sense. A super minor detail I love about the new Salmon Run uniform is the duck tape around the ankles and wrists. As someone who had to work outside, sometimes in the heavy rain, having water get into your boots and make your socks soggy is one of worst feelings in the world lmao. Seeing that makeshift way of solving that problem is really nice cause, while there are new upgrades to Grizz Co. it's still a small budget business that can't fully give there workers proper PPE.
I really hope you delve into the details of Alterna. There's a lot to unpack there.

Mr. Grizz’s change in language actually has a localization-based story behind it. In the original Japanese version, Grizz is a much more polite and kind individual. This is due to Grizzco’s inspiration from Japanese “black companies”- workplaces with exploitative treatment of its employees, sort of like a sweatshop. Stereotypically, the higher ups of black companies put on a kind and flowery facade to conceal their toxic business practices. Since that stereotype isn’t as prominent in the west, Mr. Grizz was localized to be more outwardly aggressive in Splatoon 2. Now in Splatoon 3, it seems this change has been reverted to translate Grizz in a way more accurate to the original text.

The one style of salmon art is based on Pacific Northwest and Alaskan Native Art. The carved bear is also a reference to this.

A lot of the salmon are named after species from the Pacific Northwest (Coho, Chum Sockeye etc.), and the stylized paintings on many of the stages are based off of the cultural art of the northwestern coastal indigenous peoples, like the Tsimshian, Tlingit and Tla-o-qui-aht. Two things about the Salmonid folkart designs you noticed:
    1. at the pay counter in grizzco, stickers follow the same naming format as most stickers in the game, with a short code of all-caps letters only indirectly hinting at real words, followed by the “type” of sticker it is, such as graffiti, logo, neon, poster. So the names are obscured somewhat by the codes. Most of the stickers at that shop that are part of Grizzco’s official branding start with the Code Prefix “GCI” (Grizzco Industries), a few warning labels have the “SR” (Salmon Run), and are presumably government mandated safety items, and finally the graffiti has the prefix “TS”-seeming to confirm that it’s made by a different group for a different purpose, likely, as you guessed a Salmonid Tribal artform.
    2. There’s a much closer stylistic analog to these TS- graffiti icons than Aztec carvings-though there are certainly similarities there as well-if you have ever spent extended time in the Cascades/Pacific Northwest region, the traditional art of the Coast Salish people is pretty much unavoidable, and the stylistic similarities are STRIKING. And while IRL this style is mostly associated with that region of the US & Canada, the Native American tribes that called it home for thousands of years, and the Sea (many of the subjects of the art are fish and seabirds) it also is strongly associated with the Tabletop RPG Shadowrun, a classic 80s cyberpunk setting, with the City-State of Seattle being the “default” sprawl for the game, and the logo for the series being a rendition of the Great Dragon Lofwyr (A literal Dragon and CEO of German Megacorp Saeder-Krupp) in the Coast Salish artstyle. Cyberpunk is basically all about resisting shady corporate overlords, so it fits SO well

The fact that Mr Grizz also uses Splattack to advertise Grizzco highlights that he's rather out of touch with inkling fashion, as bands like Squid Squad weren't as popular as they were a few years prior when Splattack was released. This either means that Mr Grizz didn't know much about current trends or he has been using the same VHS advertisement for years to cut down on costs.

Honestly the mr grizz in the story mode seems more monologing and supervillainish than he does in salmon run dialogue. Which is odd considering salmon run dialogue is probably prerecorded, and his dialogue in alterna isn’t.
Maybe the lines are older and grizz has gotten even more CEO since those were recorded, or someone else recorded those lines, I like the idea of an rogue AI or lil’ Judd, considering someone has to be running grizzco now

    • @ParasocialCatgirl
      @ParasocialCatgirl Рік тому

I'd wager that Li'l Judd has usurped control of GrizzCo. Seeing as Mr. Grizz and Li'l Judd are both mammals, and Mr. Grizz's motives were basically 'reject marine life, return to mammal', it wouldn't be completely out-of-character for Mr. Grizz to have entrusted Li'l Judd with maintaining GrizzCo (so nobody would expect anything untoward happening) whilst Mr. Grizz was making his final preparations over in Alterna. Also, Li'l Judd has been somewhat frustrated by being stuck in the shadow of Judd, so as far as Li'l Judd is concerned, having his own thing that Judd has absolutely nothing to do with (such as GrizzCo) would probably be a very attractive prospect to him.
Anywho, the monologuing and such Mr Grizz does in story mode can be justified because, in story mode, Mr. Grizz is going mask-off about his intentions; as far as he was concerned, he already won. If he said the quiet part out loud back when he was still running GrizzCo, he would have scared everyone away and wouldn't have been able to get anywhere with his plan.
Anywho, I suppose it wouldn't surprise me if the current 'Mr. Grizz' lines are all ordinary prerecorded messages, left by Mr. Grizz himself long before he departed for Alterna. However, I don't think that Mr. Grizz anticipated Big Runs happening by the time he departed, so it wouldn't surprise me if those messages end up being delivered by Li'l Judd (as the new Mr. Grizz)

on the ruins of ark polaris map in splatoon 2 there are several "caution: bear in area" signs near the ramps that lead up to the egg basket. now that we already know what ark polaris was and who was on board... it hits SO different now, its insane how far back the foreshadowing goes!!!

Not quite Aztec, no.. All of those tribal looking designs are inspired by Pacific Northwest Native American cultures. I also think that those cultures have some influence on the Salmonid lore. To Coast Salish people especially-Which I am one of-Salmon have a huge cultural and spiritual significance. in a magazine for splatoon 2 we have a lore drop of the fish with a backpack. where his main idea is to put him where slopes are in turf war maps. the article complains how he is everywhere( as in the artist was too good at tagging and took all the slopes ). after their effort to contextualize it in 2, makes it weird to me that next game they just give it to grizzco. maybe grizz bought the art but, grizz really doesn't care that much about the culture of inklings. and he certainly sees himself above it. how he would even learn about said street art is unknown. but hey you gotta repurpose those assests somehow.

1:30 I think someone might've told you this before but in the lore of the game, Salmonids believe that getting eaten is the best way to dye. That's why they carry pots and pans, why there are food statues everywhere, and is why Mr. Grizz DOESN'T want people to eat salmonids. Some of the salmonids like the griller look as appetizing as possible to get other species to eat them. This also justifies this design too.

The S2 manual looks like it was designed more for humans than S3 since it's the only part of the game that uses a basic sans serif font other than the system error popups. As an amusement ride operator it reminds me a lot of the ride manuals we keep at every ride. They're used by every operator and are usually kind of beat up around the edges. The manufacturer's manuals are mostly for maintenance; the manuals operators get that pertain to the park's operational standards are done in-house, so they use Calibri font 😭 They also have to be updated multiple times per season (usually once or twice) so they have a lot of the graphic design errors you mentioned in terms of word placement, because having all the information visible is more important than making it pretty. They're also being written by operations folks and not graphic design people, which I think is an important consideration for the Grizzco manual. It's not that they're less professional, it's that their job has nothing to do with design and manuals are living documents and it would be more time than it's worth to hire a designer. They don't have doodles but at a couple of rides you'll see places someone wrote down something they wanted to remember (that they *shouldnt* have done).
Believe it or not it's not as sus of a job as you'd expect from Grizzco, but despite having a lot more safety protections it kind of has the same energy. The stuff backstage feels like theme park stuff that got too beat-up to have onstage, that aren't unsafe enough to throw out; but the benches are at odd angles, the tables have a few dents, the vending machines sometimes give you the wrong drinks... I'd imagine older parks have even more of the same energy. I know of a boardwalk park that has a staff break area right underneath their 95-year-old wooden coaster.
Which is why it's so interesting to me that Wahoo World could be connected to Grizzco. A few of the rides at that park remind me a lot of real-life human amusement rides, such as the drop tower (I think Pearl mentioned a name for it but I forget) and the coaster track, which although I haven't looked at it in detail since S2, reminds me a lot of the one at the real-life Santa Monica Pier. I doubt they would be the same design exactly since we're so much bigger than Inklings, and a lot of these rides couldn't safely constrain an inkling, but what if Grizz influenced the theme park industry somehow?

One other thing I absolutely love about the Grizzco VHS commercial: the music is rendered using an intentionally shoddy MIDI synthesizer that was likely inspired by the Roland SC-55, or rather, Microsoft's butchered version of it that is bundled with Windows for MIDI support.
The SC-55 is known for its generally bad-quality instrument presets compared to other modules of the era, its prominence in late DOS and Windows 95/98 gaming, and low-budget TV shows. And the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synthesizer is so bad even compared to the original module, that it forever tainted the general public perception of MIDI as a file format for the decades to come.
Its use in the Grizzco commercial further emphasizes its extreme low-budget nature.
