That race was huge for American road cycling. So many guys my age got into road racing after this race and really changed to course of my life and many others. I still race today.

I was a category 4 racer in Cincinnati in 1988. Grewal was a pro with Team Crest, sponsered by Proctor and Gamble. We had a 4 day race for Cincinnati's Bicentennial. I got to see Grewal ride, dude was awesome. 7 Eleven's domestic team, ( Frankie Andreau) Pepsi Fanini (Roberto Gaggioli, John Eustice) were also there. I was with Team Speed, sponsered by Mike's Bikes. Our Pro rider was Gerry Fornes, a Canadian. He later would finish second to Francesco Moser in Mosers last race in Canada. It was an awesome time to ride and race, the 80's were golden era of American bicycle road racing.

I watched this race live on TV in 1984! What an unbelievable win by Alexi. Thanks for uploading.

No one specifically mentioned that Greg Lemond (who was commentating) missed the 1980 Olympics when the USA boycotted in 1980 before he turned professional. He would have been the Gold medal favorite in the Road Race as he had won multiple medals at the Amateur World championships. He went on to win two World Professional Road Race championships.

I remember Alexi said he watched "Conan the Barbarian" the night before to get psyched up.

Me too. I’m in that group of people at 17:40 running to the next fence.

I was 3 but would have loved to have been there, must have been difficult to cycle in that heat

Bauer and Lauritzen both had a long pro career after these Games.
I don't remember anything from Grewal or Sæther.

Did Bauer ever win a sprint finish in his career?

Alexi refused to take the lead in the break away. Rode like a coward. Smart, but lacking any virtue.

Probably cost him his career since he did not work for Davis phynney

Not at all. Alexi's temperament and health issues did not make him suited for Europe. As a domestic pro he did alright.

@@djevelkjokken204 As I have said 'Probably' cost him. Cycling is a very conservative sport . Especially in Europe. I mean you are not endearing yourself to anyone if you are supposed to work for someone and you do the opposite. I think Alexi himself had written an article on the win . It was a pretty cool article for anyone interested in cycling. He was supposed to be a pretty difficult guy from what I have read. I have no idea regarding his health issues.

Hi did work for Phinney by playing the rabbit, forcing Phinney's foes to chase. Phinney never followed as that strategy dictates. That's on Phinney. Grewal also chose a better gear for the sprint on the incline. He won it, period.
