I've had enough of people telling me that eating fast food is easier and cheaper than cooking yourself. The sole purpose of this video is to debunk that idea. I went to McDonald's, got three meals worth of food, then went to the market and spent the same amount of money and cooked a ton of delicious food. I ended up making enough food for 3-4 days and didn't even use up everything that I bought. Even if you eat off the dollar menu, cooking at home can save you some green. See below for what I made

What I also made but didn't show in video:
    1. Crispy Potatoes
    2. Banana Egg "pancakes"
    3. Tortilla Chips
    4. Taco Slaw Salad
    Recipes:
    Ingredients:
    Cooking Oil
    Salt & Pepper
    Potatoes
    Onions
    Ground Beef
    Canned Jalapenos
    Tomato Sauce
    Cucumbers
    Cabbage
    Carrots
    Lime Juice
    Vinegar
    Rice
    Black Beans
    Tortilla Wraps
    Eggs
    Scallions
    Instructions:
In an oven tray, put oil and salt. Cut up potatoes into French fries and place them on the tray and mix it around with the oil and salt. Put it in the oven to bake at 425 degrees.
In a pan fry up some diced onions and then add ground beef and cook it together with the onions.
Mix up canned jalapenos (save a couple of jalapenos to roast later on) with a little bit of the pickled jalapenos juice and blend it with the tomato sauce and blend it all together in a blender to make into a spicy jalapeno tomato sauce. Dip your potato fries into the sauce and enjoy!
Take left over pickled juice and add a little bit of water and add in some cucumbers and salt.
Slice up some cabbage and add some roasted cut up carrots. Add lime juice and salt. You can add vinegar or seasoning if you’d like.
Add a little bit of cabbage in a rice cooking pot and cook it with some rice to add flavor to the rice.
Add in some roasted jalapenos into a cooking pot with some canned black beans and a little bit of cabbage.
Grill your tortillas and add in all your ingredients: black beans, ground beef, cabbage, spicy jalapeno tomato sauce and cucumbers with your fries on the side and enjoy!
    Bangin’ Fried Rice
In a wok pan, throw in some cabbage with your ground beef and in a cracked egg and cook all together and add in cooked rice. You can also add in scallions and soy sauce if you’d like.
    The BG Loaded Omelette
In a pan, add in some chopped up carrots and potato fries and in your beaten eggs. Add in some ground beef and let it cook into an omelette and add in scallions. Enjoy!
    The Tacosagna
In an oven tray, place some tin foil. Spread some spicy jalapeno tomato sauce on the tin foil and add your tortillas. On top of your tortillas add in ground beef. Add another layer of tortillas on top of ground beef and add black beans with a little cabbage and spicy tomato sauce. Add another layer of tortillas and spread spicy tomato sauce and put it to bake. Once it has baked, crack in some eggs and let it cook on top of tortilla. Add some salt and pepper. Enjoy!
The Egg In a Tortilla Hole
Take a tortilla and cut a hole in the center. Put tortilla in the frying pan with oil and crack the egg in so that the yolk is at the center where the hole is and let it cook for a little. Add in salt & pepper. Flip over gently and let the tortilla cook on the other side. Put tortillas in a plate and add in your black beans and cabbage with some spicy tomato sauce. Enjoy!

ItsMe Cat how much should they make? Never heard a fast food worker say they should make more than the military. There jobs for youth, so what happens to those jobs between 9-3 when kids are in school? Do those workers now get a bump in pay because now you don't have teens to do them. There is a lot of nuance to this issue. Also the military make more than 15/hr. Also how "American" that you get to arbitrarily decide without doing any research how much someone should make.

    • @ohmymathilda7238

ItsMe Cat than that's another problem??? But working at McDonald's is stressful and hard in different ways and people should earn Enough money to live off of one job? Also raising the wages would actually make the products a few cents pricier....nothing big...most of the money just goes to the big people of the company. People in your military should earn more, but also don't look down on the people who prepare your food because you can't do it yourself/ don't know how to/ don't want to? Don't judge how people earn their money...you don't want someone to do this to you as well

I, too, love oven fries! I bought some silicone baking mats which amped up the whole "oven fry experience". You need very little oil and end up with lovely, crunchy fries (beware, though, if your fries are cut very thin. You have to keep an eye on those kids, cause they end up very brown and way past crunchy). I don't eat fast food any more, unless I cook it myself...I love this video!!! I had half a pizza left over from the other night, and 2 burgers from McDonalds, so I made pizza and burgers for dinner and it was faster than fast food. Just a few minutes in the microwave oven and it tasted exactly like going to McDonalds and pizza hut.
Can't believe people go out and wait in line at McDonalds when you can just make it exactly the same at home, less time and best of all because it was just leftovers in my fridge, it was totally free! and I even got pizza as well.

It is always going to be cheaper to make the food at home instead of getting take-away, but there are some things that you are not taking into account here. You would need to add the cost of things like the oil used, the electricity/gas for cooking, the water and detergent for washing up, and most importantly, the value that you place on your time. Fast food is all about convenience. You can go somewhere and have a meal given to you in 5 minutes, eat it and be done. No prep, no clean-up etc. That is what people are really paying for.

Try timing it some time during meal time. It is the same amount of time or faster to run to a convenience store or grocery store and grab some food, then wait in a line to buy it, then cook it. Honestly, if you just grab some veggies from the produce section and tortillas from the Mexican food aisle, then you got a wrap using condiments you already have at home. Or how about chick peas, potatoes and stewed tomatoes with curry seasoning and you can make Channa Masala in the crock pot while you are at work or running errands all day.

MJ I don’t make videos but one thing I do is run a sink full of soapy hot dishwater before I start cooking. I use that to wash everything as soon as I’m done with it. By the time the food is done all the things that I used for cooking are washed and drying on the rack and the stove and counters are wiped clean. I drain the sink, run a fresh sink of water and use that to wash my plates after eating.

So you are looking at $1.50ish a pound!!! Man! I wish I could find a store that sold it for that!!! Everywhere I shop... Kroger... Meijer (Michigan)... Walmart... it's closer to $4.50 per pound... for the cheap stuff!!! Even the marked down stuff is way more expensive...

Well, the best bet is to take the advice from the beginning of the video :) Buy what is cheap and on sale that is suitable for your palate. Burger is pretty expensive where I live (not $16 persay, but I'd only get half of what he got for what he paid) but if you can find a good sale on it and have the extra cash, buy in bulk and freeze it in multiple ziplocks for future use. Even then, other meats are cheaper and can be used in place of that (where I live it's chicken, but it could be anything depending on where you live). The entire point, at least from what I've gathered, is to seek out and buy the things in your price bracket and be creative on how to cook it.

I'm 23, been cooking since I was a kid as it was necessary for me to cook for myself growing up since parents weren't home a lot due to work. Its amazing how many people don't know how to cook and don't bother to learn to cook properly when it's one of the skills you can improve simply due to the amount of times you have to do it throughout one week. Cooking has begun to seem like such a daunting task that some people don't even bother making their own food anymore. But I do understand that due to certain circumstances you wouldn't be able to cook for yourself at times, but it really is cheaper.

If you soak your black beans and cook them from scratch, you will never go back to canned again! I pay about $1 for a pound of black beans (dollar tree). You soak them in hot water (just add super hot tap water) for 2 hours. Rinse and drain. In my pressure cooker I got on a Black Friday deal for $10, put the drained beans cover with water to about 2 inches above and add the following (if you have these): cumin or chipotle chili powder, a few teaspoons of salt, crushed garlic or garlic powder (whatever you have) add a chopped onion and a good few teaspoons of black pepper. Lock down the lid, put your pressure sensor on it. Once your pressure cooker starts whistling, let it go for 30 minutes. Turn it off, remove from heat. In an hour, release the pressure (if there is anything left). Your $1 has now made you about 5 lbs of beans. You are welcome! I want you guys to try it!

These videos are pretty damn misleading and are hiding a lot of the practical costs of what they do behind the magic of compressing it down into a video and presenting it as if its some kind of well balanced comparison.
Its obvious the reason they picked a three meal sample instead of say, just a single value menu item because it would basically be next to implausible for them to do anything with a dollar and change as a homecook and shopper because McDonald's economy of scale is immense in both material, labor and utility.

    • @anyu
      @anyu 6 років тому +2

Instructions Unclear; Face stuck in toaster Well yeah you're not going to have a meal on literally two dollars to start. But if you budget your paycheck and stock up on staples (flour, eggs, etc.) with the money you would have used for fast food you can indeed eat for cheaper than MacDonalds. Lentils and rice, or beans and rice make a complete protein and are dirt cheap. Get a $3 live chive plant and chop a few chives and throw an egg in your ramen for protein and color. Potatoes with a little butter and salt can take a myriad of forms and are delicious. There are a ton of very, very cheap options that don't even take the time or effort shown in this video. And yeah, if someone wants MacDonalds go for it. I used to eat fast food a lot cause I worked there and with my discount could get a meal for almost nothing. Problem is that eating fast food often coexists with other non cheap habits, laziness, and obesity. How many people seriously just get one macdouble all day and are done? Eating out is going to run you probably $8 a day unless you work there if you want to stay at maintenance calories.

I prepare cold foods or foods with very little clean up time. See my above comments. It requires little effort to chop a few things, dump a couple cans and let it sit in a crock pot with a disposable liner in it, or use a blender to make a smoothie then blend dishsoap and water in the blender to clean it. 30 second clean up including rinse time. Even with a portable convection oven/ air fryer you can add soap and water and turn the fan on high while you eat so the clean up will be just a wipe and rinse when you are done.

You could also cook primarily food that doesn't spoil easily and cook in huge batches. If someone is eating mcdonalds every day I don't think they would mind say cooking a big batch of chili that would last you 7 days.
Of course you still have to clean up on that first day but for the other 6 days you'd be free and all you'd have to do is heat up the chili and you're good to go.
