- Watch this quick guide on how to make a gravel garden. We show you a five step plan to making a gravel garden. You've got to start by ensuring the ground is flat and level and giving the area an edge. Once that's prepared a weed proof membrane should be used to stop the gravel from mixing with the soil and of course to prevent weeds growing through. Finally we look at the best ways of planting it up before adding the gravel. All in all this covers the five crucial steps to creating a maintenance free gravel garden.

Thanks for sharing the video, very informative and easy to follow. I am building a tropical garden. This video gave me a good idea to have a gravel garden. Can grow my tropical plant in pots and sit them on top of the gravel or plant them in the ground too! What’s gravel is good for tropical garden?
Simple 5 sets - thank you. We would add PourOn to avoid them flicking everywhere.
That first transition was everything.
🤛
Great advice... just need to persuade the husband to do it now!
Yep, crack the whip Louisa !
Lol, no husband here, doing it meself
Do you mean YOUR husband, or just any old husband? My wife hates being referred to as THE wife!
Hi great video thank you. Could you do a video showing how to peg the fabric down please
Nice.
Thank you
Weeds will love to nest in that material
Good video, gives food for thought. I am unsure about ordering the gravel from a supplier but it might be by weight. If it’s by volume (say, cubic metres) then it’s fairly straightforward. If it’s by weight then your estimate of a conversion from volume (which I can work out myself) to weight - say, weight per square metre or cubic metre/yard would give a guide. No doubt the supplier could help but your independent guide before ordering would be helpful.
Wait do you lift all the grass up first?!. Did I miss that part?.
Thanks for the video! Our small front garden is an unleveled gravel garden and I want to make it a bit more appealing to the eye. If I want to level it, do I need to remove all the gravel and start again? Thanks
I would start from scratch Natalie 👍🏼 and get some landscape fabric down to limit the weeding in the near future.
Hi. I'm so happy I've found your videos as I'm a novice and wanting to create a gravel garden! Your videos are easy for me to follow..so thanks 😊. Could you please give me some advice on what to do if you already have plants in place when laying fabric!
Hi Jeanie, thanks for asking. I’d dig out your existing plants, lay the fabric and then put the plants back. This will give you the choice of changing their position and is best done in early Spring before they start to grow. I hope that helps, good luck 😊
@@TheEnduringGardener Thank you
Awesome video and straight to the point:) Please what is the name of gravel??? Thank u
Thank you, that’s 10-20mm golden gravel.
I sure hope you cleaned the dirt off of the weed barrier. If not, that’s a completely fertile spot for weeds to grow. Seeds are throughout soil so if you lay the weed barrier down, then cut into it and cause a mess, you’ll have a weed mess in just a year or two. You should always plant first, then lay the barrier down and layer it around the plant.
Thanks for commenting Jesse, this could be helpful information for any other visitors thinking about creating a gravel garden. Although i didn’t experience any weeds as a consequence of cutting into it.
What did you use to level the soil? Is it necessary to have a crushed rock base? The area i'm doing is 4m2 so not big at all. Many thanks!
I wonder how you drained out the rain water that seep through the gravel, as you've got the stone edges around
Thanks for commenting. The landscape fabric I’m using is permeable and the ground beneath free draining so I don’t have any issues with standing water. Have a good day and good luck with your gravel garden project 👍🏼
Will heavy rain make the gravel damp and unwalkable? Especially so with the fabric underneath
I guess this depends on how free draining the soil is beneath the gravel. Weed suppressant membranes usually allow for drainage so this shouldn’t be a problem. ☝️
Can we use od carpet instead of landscape fabric?
Sure I don’t see why not. If it’s a nice pattern you might not need gravel 😂
Do we need the gravel grids for a patio? I've ordered one, but realised we might not need it now?
I’m not familiar with gravel grids so my view would be it’s not essential 👍🏼
Could you use self binding gravel instead of normal gravel?
Sure thing 👍🏼
Cba with levelling
I know everyone will laugh when I ask this but how EXACTLY do you level a garden? I've removed all the turf and now I'm struggling . The garden is 5.7mx5.3m and consists of THICK clay soil and rubble (bits of brick, stones, chippings and hard dried-out mini-boulders of clay). It's pretty square shaped but the centre is about 20cm higher then drops off on each side (like a kind of flat dome). We can't afford a digger -im doing everything myself. Also - 3 sides have panel fencing that sits on top of concrete panels. Do I dig a trench under them orbelow their level and fill it with something or maybe use railway sleepers? I have no landscaping knowledge other than I know I need to get it flat, but higher on the house side by 10cm (for drainage) - do I just have to keep crouching and trying to figure it out by eye? please help!
Get yourself four sticks, some string and a level. Put the sticks at each corner and tie the string to them to form a rectangle. Then get the string level - that’s your guide. I’d suggest you dig out and use the rubble from the highest section to fill the lowest. Good luck 👍🏼
@@TheEnduringGardener fantastic! Thank you so much for the brilliant advice!
Hello👋🙋♂️ there...
Amazing and very interesting video🎥... Super like👌👌👌 project
Good information very helpful🎥
Do keep posting
Warm regards and best👍💯 wishes

0:55 Edge the area. I think that is not a right or full advice. I'd recommend to glue the membrane to the edge on a perpendicular surface . It might be to use hermetique or a mixture of tile adhesive and cement with the addition of an insecticide against ants.
Instead of using landscape fabric could I use a thick plastic sheet? Will that kill the grass underneath?
Hi Phil, I wouldn’t do this as you will want any rainwater to drain away. I reckon there’s a risk that it will puddle on a thick plastic sheet.
@William Doubleu Only when its been jogging.
Then after a year or two, couch grass comes along and zig-zags through that landscape fabric like it's nothing and all the fabric does is it's in the way. You'll need to remove the gravel and tare it all up etc.
Or spray it
UA-cam channel can you find any better information anywhere else thanks for your time🐦🐞👍👍👍
What kind of gravel is this?
Here in the uk it’s called ‘golden gravel.’
Thanks but that weed barrier will disintegrate in a short time and weeds do come up.
Nothing lasts forever but it’s doing a good job still 3 years in.
You don't suggest amounts of gravel (say, per square metre).
I used a tonne for that space which is about 4 by 3 metres. It’s around 4cm deep. On that basis you’ll need about 100kg (4 bags) per metre. You can of course spread it a bit thinner....
Thanks !! ))
