Gary Allan is a VASTLY underrated artist. He has lived his songs. I remember when he first made it big he had some real good songs. However, when his wife killed herself due to severe migraines and chronic depression, Gary's songs turned more towards things he was dealing with, like loss, pain, and grief. If you went album to album, they were somewhat related to the different stages of grief, and all of his albums were heart wrenching but great. There simply isn't a bad Gary Allan song, just an under-played Gary Allan song when it comes to radio play. Part of the reason for this is he plays music he wants to play, and not what record execs want him to play or want him to look like.
Garth Brooks was my go to choice in the 90s, but Gary Allan is my go to for going on 20 years now. His tone and style is unique, but also familiar, and his lyrics aren't flashy but sort of philosophical. They make you think as well as feel. That's "Life Ain't Always Beautiful" in a nutshell. You need to react to a lot more of Gary Allan's songs. His official music vids are best, but some songs don't have an official video, like "No Regrets", which is his song talking about finally getting over his wife's death and moving on. You want songs you can feel and relate to, try "The Best I Ever Had", "Every Storm (Runs Out Of Rain)", "Tough Little Boys", "Get Off On The Pain", "It Ain't The Whiskey", "Songs About Rain", "Today", and "Learning How To Bend" for just a few great songs. He should be top of the list, but because he don't play ball with radio execs and don't get as much radio play, he stated he's content being the guy who is always there, playing to all who is willing to listen, and not so much for being top dog. So as you might be able to tell, I respect his music a lot! He definitely needs to be checked out, and I've asked many reaction channels to play his music, and every one that did really enjoyed his music.

I love your energy and positive outlook so much. It's so hard living with grief, but that's the situation most people are in. It's hard and it doesn't really get easier, we just get used to it. My mom died 17 years ago, and it still is hard not having her. My heart goes out to you, I'm so sorry for your loss.

This song was the centerpiece of an extremely emotional album that Gary released months after his wife took her own life. The entire album drips with sorrow and regret; it can be difficult to listen to.
As the story goes, she asked him for a glass of water one night and he told her that he had one for her already. Then she told him she actually had a headache and wanted caffeine, and asked him for a coke instead. He went downstairs to get it for her and that was when he heard the gunshot.
