    While Neo's extensions for image quality improvements are nice, if you want to get the BEST AI upscaling, sharpening and denoise, then bit.ly/TopazPh... is still well out in the lead. But this update to Luminar NEO (v1.10) isn't just about the improvements to the Upscale AI tool. There's lot's of other improvements too. Speed, stability and a few bugs squashed too.

    Since creating this video Luminar Neo has been updated and improved. You can get the newest version on sale here: bit.ly/NeoSale and maybe save more with coupon: ATNEO10 (sometimes Skylum de-activate the code if there's already a promotion running but worth giving a go!)

    Only last night I was editing a portrait photo... and I clicked the Face Enhancer Ai and I said “WTF?” And immediately unclicked it... no way was I using that function. It was hideous.

    Like you, I have thousands of photos from my D70 and also was hoping for greater improvements in upscale. Step by step we'll get there I'm sure. I found your video on presets most helpful in addressing my need to edit many of those thousands of photos I mentioned. Thank you for providing some new tools for getting me started on fixing many of those old photos. And it's great to see you back and continuing to do great work. Thanks

    I agree fully. Luminar has work to do to make this feature useful.
    I tried upscaling a 4640 x 6960 RAW file of a landscape, hoping that I could get some better detail for a crop. The process seemed to take ages and the upscale image appeared to be no better than the original. Then I exported a section of the original to a .jpg file and upscaled that. No improvement there either.
    Your videos have been extremely helpful. Thanks for all the work.

    Thanks Anthony. As for upscaling, I still prefer Topaz Gigapixel for that purpose. It is much more rounded and single task oriented with better results. As for the "improved" Masking AI, It is still far from being there. Still not able to identify animals (Very important for wildlife photographers) and still sketchy distinction between man-made landscape, architecture and even transportation... Lots of room for improvements.

    Thanks for the update on the new 1.10. I appreciate your videos very much. And thanks for the link to the topaz upscale version. I agree that Topaz has nailed it, whereas Luminar still needs some work.

    Thanks for the update. Conceptually, Skylum is moving in the right direction. As some have stated, the extensions are a bust. However, if they keep refining the base product, they could have an exceptional product. It seems Skylum has take the Apple model and controls the basic product, thus no plugins. They are too far down the road to add plugins, which is unfortunate. I believe this basic decision is a major problem for the evolution of the software. Anthony, keep pressing them.

      Luminar's Magic Light and Focus Stacking extensions work quite well. Working along side Capture One (instead of one or the other) performs brilliantly. Magic Light is a unique offering that no one else is offering at the moment.

    Thanks for this! v1.10 is definitely better than 1.09, but in the photo of you and your wife, I noticed v1.10 softened the detail in your beard. It still needs improvements, especially in the face examples you showed.

    I've happily been using Neo's noisless AI. Glad they've done some work on Mask AI. I'm happy with HDR (I was also happy with Aurora HDR which probably doesn't support the raws from my Fuji X-H2 at this point) Still reach for Topaz for upscale though.
    I actually burst out laughing the first time I tried face enhance in Neo

    Agree Topaz is just brilliant but I have found that depending on the subject sometimes you are better to do a mix of the Topaz suite of products as results are slightly different depending on the subject. I guess down to the AI algorithm. I have to say having Luminar and Topaz as PS plugins and Lightroom at the start and end of the process the results can be spectacular. One more tip as we do a lot of underwater video in the Bay of Islands and do frame extracts, this is a great use for upscale not just older photos. You can now get a great image from 4k video extracts.

    Yes, I would even say that almost all Luminar Neo plugins are bad, be it Upscale, Supersharp, Noiseles and actually HDR Merge too. Unfortunately Photo AI from Topaz Labs is very expensive for normal people and only for professionals who earn money from it. And the one that I use the most, Gigapixel AI, they are not going to update it anymore.
    Thanks

    Another great video, many thanks. A couple of naive questions. First, if you have scanned a picture from and old print is there any value in using upscaling? Second, if you are using upscaling and sharpening, is there a best order for applying these--upscale then sharpen or vice-versa? Keep up the good work I always learn lots from your videos.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  Рік тому

      Hi David. Good questions. These photos were all taken digitally. Hence the aggressive jpeg compression on the older 2mp shots. They certainly benefit from any quality improvements we can get. And yes you do get different results based on the order of tool application. Sharpening is best saved till later especially I'm there are jpeg artefacts or excessive noise.

    I only bought the upscale and sharpen extensions and was totally underwhelmed by upscale. In fact, just resizing the image in Affinity Photo worked better! The new version is smoother but very soft, did you try running the new images through the sharpener to see if it removed the softness? I need to go try that...

    Well, they are keeping at it. I am interested to re-run a buck photo I took on vacation in Scotland last fall. I am not kitted out for wildlife, but there it was. My little sony a6600 with the 70-350 did okay but cropping made it pretty soft. My first go pre update did actually improve my photos as long as I didn’t crop too much. So what will the new update do? 🤔

    What version of Neo is right for me. I am a "happy snapper" in my 80's would the basic be my best bet?

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  Рік тому

      Hi David, in all honesty I wouldn't worry about the subscription with the extensions. They're good and all, but not essential for most editing. You can get the full version of NEO (which is my fav version of Luminar so far) on sale at the moment rather than the recurring subscription. You can use this code AFS-YtXN8E here: bit.ly/Luminar-NEO to save more. Hope that helps :) Happy snapping!

    Being brutally hones I'm so glad I watched this video, I love Luminar Neo and considered buying the upscale extension, but as of right now I feel you are being overly generous to Skylum, personally I think free upscale applications do a far better job currently, no doubt like everything else this extension will improve but as it stands it isn't worth £50 or even £40 of my money.
    EDIT - Since my above comment I bought all the extensions which included this one, jees it's utter garbage and isn't worth the 10 seconds install time. free software like 'upscayl' does a FAR better job than this premium extension.

    I do agree - Luminair Neo has a lot work to do to fix a lot of bugs especially on add-ons.
    On my Macbook Air M2 the support staff is not able to fix a bug where everytime i use erase mode to delete dots/spots the image loses quality and sharpness. 6 months have passed and no updates have been delivered to me on how i can solve this..
    Is it something happening to you in particular cases?

  • @matthewisaacs4537

    That face enhancer is comically bad for the photos you tested. It feels more like generative AI vs a tool for enhancing what already exists in the photo. It seems like it would be best suited for images like the one you worked on in your previous video for digitally restoring old photos. Photos where facial details are almost completely lost due to the physical photo deterioration over decades, or low resolution scans, or just the general poor quality of lenses and film from 100 years ago. In those types of photos where barely any facial details remain, having a generative AI tool could really help. But for the types of photos you tested with, where plenty of facial detail exists, even in lower resolution digital photos from 20 years ago, the tool is definitely a hindrance rather than a help. I do hope they keep refining it though, because Topaz shows how great it COULD be.
    As for the 1.09 -> 1.10 Upscale AI improvements, I'm not terribly impressed yet. As you said, these improvements right now are small. They're going in the right direction, but I definitely won't be giving up my Topaz tools anytime soon.

  • @barriepreecehasnowretired4779

    regardless of which software you use, would you recommend "upscaling" an old low res jpeg before or after processing in Neo? I have thousands taken before I started shooting RAW. Cheers
