@@Hedge_witch just like you can have toxic femininity as well. Women who use the inherent cuteness of femininity to manipulate and get what they want, and also are excessively moody and neurotic. So in the George of the Jungle live action movie with Brendan Fraser, there's that scene (that someone graciously uploaded to youtube) with him playing with horses while all of Ursula's friends just ogle him. Anyway, Ursula's trying to explain that despite being pretty dumb, he's not entirely stupid, and her best friend chimes in, describing him as having "Sensual Intelligence."
I love that you guys used Chris Hemsworth on the thumbnail; whenever I hear the word himbo I immediately think of him and his character in Thor: ragnarok
i like the himbo until it goes too far, joey tribbiani for example. at the start of friends he was a bit dumb but was self sufficient and street smart as well. by the end of the series he was just a dumb hot guy with no other personality, the best example being the episode when phoebe teaches him french
Yes, these are my thoughts EXACTLY! I liked Joey more when he was moderately dumb, but still competent. According to Matt Leblanc, he thought it might be funnier if Joey was the "Idiot Friend", but he became TOO unrealistically stupid. It's also ironic that Matt is actually fluent in French in real life. 😅
I agree completely. Through time they dumbed him down significantly, to ridiculous proportions. he was never my favorite character but the way the showrunners treated him was one of the main reasons I couldn’t watch past season 6-7
That's is actually brought up in the Flandering trope, it is basically when a characteristic gets exaggerated over time like Kevin's lack of intelligence from the office or flander from the simsons
Preach, I love how dumb characters tend to be the most accepting and least prejudiced, as there's genuinely not a mean bone in their bodies, especially in Joey's case. 😍
Ross dated Rachel for years over the corse of 236 episodes and was a barely decent. Joey only dated Rachel for 2 episodes and still managed to be a better boyfriend.

Hmm I think that its more like both the Chad and the himbo are evolutions of the jock archetype, only one of them demonizes him while the other develops him and lets him be a more complicated person
@@VictoriaMeira7 True enough. What I meant is that in the context of the olden Nerd vs. Chad dichotomy, as used by incels to justify hating women for being "shallow", understanding Chad not as a disrespectful macho man (the harmful jock stereotype, or rather the Gaston type), but as a himbo, can be essential to clarify why this false dichotomy is so disputed among everybody else. That is, women are, in fact, more attracted to the idea of a well-meaning, respectful Chad than to a self-pitying "Nerd", who is as harmful to them as the Gaston version of Chad would be.
I'm pretty sure incels don't hate chads. It's just general jealousy. Like how there are women who act like any desirable woman is a slut. It happens just as much on both sides. The only difference is women are lauded for doing it while men are told to suck it up lmao. It's usually okay though because most men usually want to measure up to the best, instead of making the best measure down to them lol.

I'm not conviced about Geralt. He's not an idiot. Jaskier would fit the trope more. I'm sure someone who read the books more would have better examples, but I dont get a himbo vibe from Geralt.
@@Ray03595 agreed, I was just thinking how he is actually pretty clever, just based on how he has to fight monsters. He just doesn’t take peoples crap and doesn’t care for peoples politics. But he’s not “dumb”.
@@Ray03595 I read the books and played the game. Geralt is the farthest thing from stupid I hate how they keep using him as an example. It’s obvious they didn’t watch the show or bother looking into the franchise as a whole.
Let me correct you. "A man but make it good and gentle." Harmless doesn't mean useless or unable. A himbo does have the capacity to harm, he just doesn't want to. And that's what's attractive.
An ATTRACTIVE man... But make him have emotional intelligence, respect and tenderness. I have no issues being the partner Emotional intelligence is incredibly important in the building of a solid and long-term romantic relationship, and I would like at least an equal if not someone who's better than me at stuff like communicating our feelings, expectations and needs, supporting each other and showing love and respect. I'm not the most socially skilled person, and I'd feel more comfortable in a relationship with someone who's more competent than me in that area. Viceversa, I really don't see how useful would be having a partner with my same high QI score and low social skills. I can work with that if there's love of course, but I don't see how 'logical intelligence' should be higher than 'emotional intelligence' and 'being sexually attractive' in my imaginary Ideal Partner's Requirements List. If 'being a man' means 'making your partner feel loved and secure within your relationship', then different people need different men in their lives, and for many a himbo could be the best manly men they could ever need to feel loved and safe.
What it shows is that intellect and attractiveness can be two very different things. Interestingly, attractiveness and good looks cannot be two very different things, 'cause they are the exact same thing, aren't they?
@@Veronikafenriz Curio did a "Ballad of Himbo Geralt" video that explained why the miniseries version of Geralt is...not as, uh, cynical or savvy as the book version or video game versions. And miniseries Geralt's response is basically, "Oh noes...you're right...There's racism... :( " which is more of a himbo-level conversation than Geralt would have in other media.
@@Veronikafenriz Also miniseries Geralt's decision to evoke the Law of Surprise. In the books, he does this on purpose because the Witchers recruit infants to make more Witchers, and the babies are more likely to survive training if they are protected by Destiny. In the miniseries, Himbo Geralt seems to think that it's a fun thing to ask for, and doesn't expect that it would give him guardianship over an actual human being. He was expecting a dog, or part of a good harvest.
I dated one, and it was annoying. We couldn't have normal conversations because I had to explain every little thing to him, and I was always the one helping with his problems because he didn't know how to help with mine. I wasn't his girlfriend. I was his mother and therapist.
Gotta say the rise of this trope is one of the best responses to both an arguably outdated trope such as the bimbo and just the current state of gender and gender relations. Everybody needs a himbo.
There is a downside of this trope, a lot of times the women in the cast are taking avantage of the guy´s dumb nature by making him take of his shirt or caresing his abs like creeps, so it´s incredibly unconfortable for me to see , specially since modern TV would think twice if the genders were reversed (it does happen but most of the time is rigthfully called out by critics).Edit: great you DID bring that up
Mhm. Like you're saying, it's kind of an exchange for the bimbo trope from the late 90s early 00's. They can be fun characters if the writers take the time to cultivate the character well.
i mean, i dont see the problem with either. Let hot people be hot. We're visual creatures, and we naturally objectify people we find attractive. I dont see why there is this big push to have every single character be some deep thinker, or every tv show be masterful works of art. Sometimes you just wanna watch Two Broke Girls, because they have cheap laughs and you wanna watch trash.
that happened recently in that liza koshy netflix movie, she was reduced to the POC best friend sidekick that was really creepy with a mattress salesman smh
As much as I love this take on himbos and the future of masculinity, it does bother me that intelligence is looked down upon in romantic relationships. Both himbos and bimbos are, at their core, sexist. A role reversal of gender roles can serve as a way to highlight the issue, but using it as a solution won't solve anything. In fact, it will probably just create a perpetual cycle of "action" and "reaction". In my eyes, the himbo is the 21st century take on prince charming, and the bimbo is the 21st century take on the damsel in distress. After all, two of the defining traits of a prince charming is ... that he looks good and respects women in a societally acceptable way. And one of the defining traits of a damsel in distress is that she's just a price with no critical thinking skills. So instead of looking down upon smart people for being "cynical" or "bossy", it might be time to allow them to find a way to actually move on from the sexist idea that gender defines anything besides your biological features. (Admittedly, I stole this idea from a genderless society from Angela Carter.)
@Quartz I'm guessing there are probably also plenty of intelligent people who are absolute abusive jerks to their partners and plenty of unintelligent people who've a heart of gold

It’s actually even a bit more primal than that: a guy who wouldn’t murder us (kind, optimistic, sensitive, respectful) who can keep other guys from murdering us (strong, protective)
Critically speaking, it says something when the Himbo who always respects women, is often a simpleton. It's as if a man has to be dumb in order to explain why they respect women...
@E N Fitz It's worse than that -- The implication is that a man is only safe if he *lacks the capacity* to harm women. That's analogous to assuming that a woman's desire for autonomy stems from amoral rebelliousness!!!
@@viharsarok they’re just nice? That’s the Himbos’ whole thing. Women shouldn’t get special treatment just for it to count as being respected. Someone just being nice without ulterior motives is good enough. And himbos can harm women, they choose not to. That choice not to hurt and instead to be kind to us is what is attractive, not them being dumb itself. Someone put it in the comments best, someone who chooses to do the kind choice instead of the smart choice is a himbo, which means that himbos can often look dumb even if they’re pretty clever, because they still make dumb choices. That’s why I love All Might as a himbo, even if canonically he’s an intelligent hero who uses stratagems on the daily to fight baddies and teaches a hero class lol. He just fumbles a lot due to his choices, like needing to read a teaching for dummies novel because he’s never done it before but still wants to be a good teacher or choosing a reckless quirkless kid as a successor because he’s got a kind heart. It's a frustrating trope because they almost always go, "city life sucks, country/small-town life's better".
Pretty divorced from reality. What a coincidence that in the only episode where the non-city cast goes into the city, every stereotypical bad thing happens to them in the same day. They can be tourists in a foreign place just fine, but when it comes to cities, they're disaster magnets.

growing up I respected the smart guy characters for their intellect but, as you rightly pointed out, I found their demeaning, misogynistic, and incel like qualities distasteful. Then I found the himbo and I admired the character trope ever since. While I still value intellect, the qualities of genuine kindness and optimism exemplified in the himbo are just as important to me. Watching this video showed me exactly why my favorite character in almost ever show, or movie I watch is the himbo. Also I found that Steve Urkel was the perfect exemplification of a balance between the smart guy intelligence and the himbo personality.
no, he is not, people threat him horrible for saving their lives, and yet he still do that, so he hide that he is smart and play little dumb. besides if you would read books you would see that most of the times he was used by people, in their games and quest, all he do is being a witcher, thats a whole different trope
No he isn't. I don't even really get why they say it about him based on the show, much less based on the books. He doesn't talk much, but he's good at reading people and thinks very strategically about solving complex problems. Usually, he's the smartest person in the room having to deal with the village idiot of the week who thinks himself smarter than everyone. He's basically a clever inversion of the 'big, bulky warrior guy' trope and everyone automatically assumes because of his looks that he is a brute, while in actuality he's far away from it.
I don't know the video games or books but I would never consider him like that in the tv show. I think it's because Henry Cavill is SO handsome that he could literally play Louis Pasteur or Adolf Hitler, his character would be automatically seen through the himbo trope lmao.
For the record, I just asked my Russian partner if Geralt was a himbo or not a himbo - based on having read the books - and he said, without hesitation, "himbo." There's a great trilogy of analyses on him by, I believe, Quinn Curio. You can find one of the first under "Ballad of Geralt the Himbo"
We need a Bombshell trope. Also wanna add Makeovers, the Housewife, and The Man's Man, the "Lovable" Bigot
You could've included more Terry Crews and The Rock Johnson clips. I feel like they've taken on himbo type characters. Masculine but not hyper focused on sex or trying to be the smartest person in the room.
You guys should do a vid about the flanderisation of characters, where they essentially dumb down a character to one main personality trait, like joey from friends or britta in community

I just like how the himbo never tries to pretend to be someone else. They are aware they aren’t the brightest but make up for that in many other ways such as being caring, funny, protective, and respectful. Himbos also almost never cause drama because there around just to have a good time.
Basically an phisically attractive guy that gets away with being a dumbass and girls want to be with him without having to do anything because of his looks.
The most attractive aspect of the himbo for women is undoubtedly the lack of predatory maliciousness they have to worry about with every other man. Change my mind.
@@heinoustentacles5719 I don't think its that dumb men respect women, I think it's more that cynical screen writers often show the himbos natural kindness as being linked with naivete and therefore dumb. So glad that Sam got a shout-out! He was definitely one of my favorite Glee characters. Really layered (body dysmorphia, dyslexia, money problems) and yet got so little love by the writers. He was definitely the best guy in that show. So funny to watch this, because I was just like "Oh, I love that character!" "Oh, that one too!" "...oh, I guess that's the point..." Himbos are apparently one of my favorite tropes.
I'm glad they also adressed the "dumb" part of the himbo representing the pressure we have on being smarter and smarter. Because this is really good represented in Jason from The Good Place. He took his time showing expressive smart thoughts, but it was increasingly noticeable how he made pretty good use of his capacities to notice stuff that others didn't notice because each one of the main cast had their different patterns of thinking. We learned to appreciate his character because he showed their was a wisdom to his way of living even if that wisdom was limited. But that was fitting because each character was limited in their own way and it came so well together. Except Janet. She actually did know everything...in her way.
I usually like your analysis, but on this one I would have to disagree. Praising the lack of intelligence portrait on characters because it makes them down to earth, more relatable or less arrogant than intelligent character should be more critical. Imagine if this was done on the other way around. Which of course, has been done already, the difference is we find those characters less "revolutionary". My take is, being dumb does not equal being cute.
@@Hedge_witch I'm saying in support of femininity with no other relevant characteristics, like empty headed arm candy Would a man be toxic if he preferred not to interact with women? Let's say he had an abusive mother or a bad breakup or somesuch

I think the "perfect mix of masculinity" is the kind gentleness of a himbo combined with intelligence. Being good at your job is important, but it's also important to be modest and caring.
I don't think the himbo has to necessarily be dumb in order to be likeable. In my graphic novel, I have a character who is kind of a himbo. He is pure brawn, the muscle of the group, he is emotionally intelligent, but he is hopelessly naive, innocent, and unassuming. He is incredibly wide-eyed , gentle, and shy. But he is most certainly not dumb, he is actually pretty competent.
Jason Momoa has Uber-Himboed: he is both Khal Drogo and Aquaman, both himbo incarnations for men and women that still in both forms appeal to the other genders, kind of like Jason Momoa.
Impressive how this trope mirrors the Cool Girl trope, they're everything they want the other gender to be except that if you take away the hotness, it falls apart.
Yeah, the shared idea with both himbos and manix pixie dream girls is to have a fulfilling, engaging person who shatters disillusionment. It's why they directly talk about how him being cynical would ruin it. The himbo's dopey loyalty makes him safe and his strength non-threatening. It's infantilizing and insulting for men to have their intelligence or critical thinking be a "downside", but for women their personalities have taken a backseat to their looks for centuries in media and discourse. The himbo is the rare modern case where the man's critical thinking isn't welcome, he is wish fulfilment instead of a person. The himbo absolutely is a manic pixie dream boy, and has the same inherent toxicity. Wish fulfilment isn't wrong, so long as you don't reject independent thoughts or disagreements from your actual potential partners. The himbo is about as easy to get along with as a dog, real people come with real problems and conflict, which is why the himbo is such an endearing distraction.
@Ru paul they "DIDN'T MAKE HIM FOR YOU!" And if you were paying any attention, misplaced self-confidence is clearly why women find them attractive. So you still have hope.
@Ru paul My dear friend, I may be a lesbian, but I am also ugly as shit and happily married. If I can do it with a very limited dating pool, so can you. Lose the Incel attitude and remember that women are just people and you'll be fine. Maybe watch Dr. K's session with an Incel.
Love this video!! My only gripe would be classifying Geralt from the Witcher as a himbo. Though brawny and respectful towards women, Geralt’s cynical outlook and partiality towards violence makes him fit outside of the trope. I think Geralt fits better into the “huge gruff violent man with a heart of gold” trope, especially when he interacts with Jaskier and hopefully Ciri. On that note, i would LOVE a whole video about angry dads who have their hearts won over by a powerful child they have to protect
Indeed, I love that the "Himbo" Trope is finally getting examined, since I've always loathed the implications that you can't be attractive AND smart! 🙄
@Ru paul a lack of agency is in no way part of the himbo trope. And intelligence is not an inherently maaculine trait so a man who is not intellectually intelligent is not necessarily emasculated. The fact that you think that there are no men who are kind and also have self respect and agency is ridiculous.
@Ru paul Define "masculinity"? Also no, I think the defining attractive feature of a himbo is as stated, that he respects you. As a dude you're probably not that aware of what it feels like for people to have an inherent disrespect for you, but as a woman I can tell you it makes you really sit up and notice when someone treats you as the equal you are without it being a big deal or an issue. In the case of a dude wanting a dumb, attractive girl? We all know there's no respect at work there. You want to suppress, objectify and take advantage of that. That's lacking all respect and not the same thing at all.
True Masculinity energy represents cool calm & collective as reasons of confidence. Strength, Wisdom, & Ambition. This is positive. This should be appreciated, learned, and passed down to the next generation of boys to men.

Yes, these are my thoughts EXACTLY! I liked Joey more when he was moderately dumb, but still competent. It's also ironic that Matt is actually fluent in French in real life. 😅

Basically, the himbo is the male version of Karen Smith from Mean Girls.

I don't get how himbos "respect" women. They lowkey objectify them. I guess it's more like women respect them for their looks.
Yup
@@beatamalecka4876 I was wondering why he was here. He’s intelligent, has looks, and not misogynistic.

Basically an phisically attractive guy that gets away with being a dumbass and girls want to be with him without having to do anything because of his looks.

The most attractive aspect of the himbo for women is undoubtedly the lack of predatory maliciousness they have to worry about with every other man.
Change my mind.
why would a man have to be dumb or naive to be nice to women. kind of a laugh... like saying only the dumber men respect women. quite sad...
@@heinoustentacles5719 it is sad. We live in a fucked up world and I wish it weren't so common.

Literally just here to make sure that Jason Mendoza was represented. And I love how he destroys the two most common stereotypes about Asian men.
We've had 'nice guys' and himbos so I would love to see a video on incels. You touched on it in the nice guy video and here but I'd love to see something go in depth.

J: Lucy.

J: She cheated on you several times before she finally dumped you for a scumbag with a nice car. That's my definition of a bitch.
R: Yeah, he's not wrong. You should move on, since you have way more options than us.
M: Is because I actually talk to girls. I mean, you only chase after smoking hot chicks, which is why it never works out for you.

J: If you did complain on our ears about it, we would beat the shit out of you for it.
R: That's rich coming from you. You don't even approach girls.
J: I don't have much motivation to do that anymore, considering that every time I tried, it failed.
M: You let rejection bother you too much man.
J: Because I really liked the girls that rejected me. You pretty much do the same but with an ex that doesn't deserves it.
R: He got you there.
J: Can we please go back to the game now? My winning streak could use a few more flawless victories.
M: Nah, I'm going to sleep. She agreed to meet me tomorrow.
J: Jesus fucking christ, why the fuck are you meeting her for?
M: None of you business. Good night.
R: Yeah, I'm going to sleep too. I think she goes to work early.
J: Are you seriously gonna stalk her?
R: It's not stalking, I'm just creating opportunities for a conversation.
J: A conversation about why she shouldn't call the police on your ass?
R: See, that's why you never get the girl you like, you're too negative.
J: Whatever, don't use your phone call to call me to bust you out of jail when that shit backfires.
R: We'll see who's gonna be joking after I have that sexy ass on my arms and you still stuck on video games.

@@mrtyrant1680 Incels named themself. It didn't just turn into what it did.
I hated how everyone treated him especially Will and girls :/
“I NEED A HIMBO
I’M HOLDING OUT FOR A HIMBO TILL THE END OF THE NIGHT
he’s gotta be strong
and he’s gotta be fast
and he’s gotta be dumb and polite”
I usually like your analysis, but on this one I would have to disagree. Praising the lack of intelligence portrait on characters because it makes them down to earth, more relatable or less arrogant than intelligent character should be more critical. Imagine if this was done on the other way around. Which of course, has been done already, the difference is we find those characters less "revolutionary". My take is, being dumb does not equal being cute.
MY take is being dumb does not equal NOT being cute
I really hope that the himbo trope isn't the only one you consider an example of positive masculinity.
Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander is a good one too
I'm not sure they really consider there to be any positive masculinity unless it exists in support of femininity
@@Cunnysmythe Er... the phrase "well duh" springs to mind?

I think the "perfect mix of masculinity" is the kind gentleness of a himbo combined with intelligence. Being good at your job is important, but it's also important to be modest and caring.

I don't think the himbo has to necessarily be dumb in order to be likeable. In my graphic novel, I have a character who is kind of a himbo. He is pure brawn, the muscle of the group, he is emotionally intelligent, but he is hopelessly naive, innocent, and unassuming. He is incredibly wide-eyed , gentle, and shy. But he is most certainly not dumb, he is actually pretty competent.
I don’t think himbos are necessarily dumb, just sort of naive and innocent plus respectful.
"Emotional Support Himbo" must be the best phrase I've learned today
Me reading the title: da who?
**me clicking anyways because it's from The Take and it must be glorious**
Jason Momoa has Uber-Himboed: he is both Khal Drogo and Aquaman, both himbo incarnations for men and women that still in both forms appeal to the other genders, kind of like Jason Momoa.
I'm laughing my ass off at Geralt being in this video
I think he doesn't fit the "not very bright" criteria
Geralt is actually quite smart IMO
Indd!
Yeah, when he first popped up I was dying lool
Yeah but he's very emotionally stupid and most of the time he has dumb ideas and stupid decisions. He's very philosophical tho.
The Witcher is definitely not a himbo. He’s basically a detective who solves monster related incidents
Impressive how this trope mirrors the Cool Girl trope, they're everything they want the other gender to be except that if you take away the hotness, it falls apart.
and also the respectfulness
and niceness
Sounds like the Himbo has a lot in common with the Manic Pixie Dream Girl 🤔
I mean he does also fall into the category of wish fullfillment characters, just for women this time.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's Josh Chan is probably my favourite himbo
Love this video!! My only gripe would be classifying Geralt from the Witcher as a himbo. Though brawny and respectful towards women, Geralt’s cynical outlook and partiality towards violence makes him fit outside of the trope. I think Geralt fits better into the “huge gruff violent man with a heart of gold” trope, especially when he interacts with Jaskier and hopefully Ciri. On that note, i would LOVE a whole video about angry dads who have their hearts won over by a powerful child they have to protect
Coming from a Bolin fan, I already love this video.
Indeed, I love that the "Himbo" Trope is finally getting examined, since I've always loathed the implications that you can't be attractive AND smart! 🙄
Head empty, heart full, and big dumb beautiful eyes 💖🙏 please give me more himbos
@Ru paul why do you think that men who are kind and compassionte have no agency or self respect?
@Ru paul a lack of agency is in no way part of the himbo trope. And intelligence is not an inherently maaculine trait so a man who is not intellectually intelligent is not necessarily emasculated. The fact that you think that there are no men who are kind and also have self respect and agency is ridiculous.
@Ru paul a key aspect of the himbo is high emotional intelligence, so no
@Ru paul Define "masculinity"? Also no, I think the defining attractive feature of a himbo is as stated, that he respects you. As a dude you're probably not that aware of what it feels like for people to have an inherent disrespect for you, but as a woman I can tell you it makes you really sit up and notice when someone treats you as the equal you are without it being a big deal or an issue. In the case of a dude wanting a dumb, attractive girl? We all know there's no respect at work there. You want to suppress, objectify and take advantage of that. That's lacking all respect and not the same thing at all.
@Ru paul You shouldn't be kind to garner a reward. You should be kind because it's the right thing to be my man.
True Masculinity energy represents cool calm & collective as reasons of confidence. Strength, Wisdom, & Ambition. This is positive. This should be appreciated, learned, and passed down to the next generation of boys to men.
