As an outsider, here's what really gonna happen.
The BBC could just switch to general taxation running as it is.
ITV and Channel 4 could merge, becoming a Great British TV powerhouse that can pull punches with foreign streamers, with distinct brands, although the Starmer govt. would force both broadcasters to sell off some Freeview channels and businesses and follow certain rules.
Channel 5 will certainly get sold off to another American media giant or one of those City investment firms, Sky or WBD could snap it up which would offer a FTA home for their sports output. I remember the last time when they went up for sale, even Al Jazeera (yes the Qataris) were in the running to buy Ch.5 .

I’d LOOOOOVE to pay for Britbox which includes BBC+ITV+Channel 4! ❤🇬🇧 I love TV in general and the UK one is the world’s best. Unfortunately we (Europe) can’t even use the current Britbox as this operates in the USA only. These “quality” TV series on streaming platforms just don’t match the variety of traditional television programmes.

If they're all going to merge what would happen to the tv licence would the licence be abolished and replaced with a similar broadcast model like Channel 4. I feel ITV needs to up their game tv programme wise the network needs better shows. I don't believe we should ever lose free to air terrestrial tv channels. As far channel 5 we'll the tv shows on that are dire they too need to up their game.

Yes, the Licence Fee belongs in the 20th Century. Ads or subscription option is where it’s at. I’d imagine the name being…
      BBC.
They are probably the world’s most famous Broadcaster after all! A streaming service where you could potentially watch Strictly Come Dancing, Coronation Street, News, Love Island and The UK’s Favourite Dance Hit (😉) could be a real hit.
As for News, I think Ofcom need to look global (though Regional News would remain on the new BBC). You have Sky News, France 24, Euronews, CNBC, CNN etc.

There is a lot to unpick in legislation before any of this could even be thought about.
ITV operates essentially still on a region by region franchise award, not forgetting STV and ITV are two different companies.
Channel 4 is statutory corporation owned by Govt and BBC exists by Royal Charter.
5 has public service licence to broadcast it private beyond that.
Then there’s S4C in Wales which has different arrangements.
News would need to retain it’s independence for plurality reasons (although ITN is contractor for ITV, 4 and 5 anyway)
Despite its ITV branding Channel 3 breakfast licence is also separate run by ITV Breakfast Ltd.
All channel 3 and channel 5 licences come up for renewal end at end of 2024.

I did get 3-4 streamers at a time over lockdowns etc because it was still cheaper than the license fee when they were ridiculously cheap.
However, over the last year I’ve been cancelling most of them because the price rises have gotten crazy and availability has been getting poorer and poorer. With the price rises I’ve been wanting to just set aside the same money for Blu-rays.
On the non-visual front, I had Spotify since it launched in Europe but this month is my final month with it. I put up with it when they got rid of the grandfathered £5 premium to bump me up to £10 since I still listened to a lot of new music and they paid a bit better a decade ago, but recent changes have been ridiculous. And, again, so many things have been disappearing lately.
So I do agree with you, but I wouldn’t be surprised if most people with 3+ did so based on inertia when they were much cheaper like me. These companies make it almost as hard as cancelling the license fee nowadays 😅 but I’m looking forward to just ripping all my CDs onto a NAS and giving up monthly fees.

As for a new owner for Channel 5? Well, maybe the Murdochs might want to re-enter the British TV market and Comcast own Sky, there's also Sony... maybe even Netflix or Amazon might confuse everyone by buying a British linear TV network.
Personally I'd like to see Channel 5 get a British owner or at least a European owner.

I think if the BBC loses the licence money, merging with ITV will become inevitable. It's even possible that a future Tory government will force a merger between the BBC and ITV. Once that happens a merger of streaming services will follow. I think I'd favour a Disney+ style of streaming service where each brand would have their own "tab" for older and less mainstream shows while the more popular/newer ones would share the main page.

Honestly, nobody should really miss Channel 5. Especially when it doesn't add anything to the table and takes ad revenue that would otherwise be going to Channel 4 & ITV.
Saying that, there is some benefit to Paramount (and eventually Comcast or Disney, assuming one of them buys Paramount at some point) keeping Channel 5.
Firstly, it means that Paramount (and eventually the likes of Disney & Comcast) would be able to retain the FTA Rights to the content they own rather than licence them out to the likes of BBC/ITV/Channel 4. Which would increase the revenues they generate from said content.
Secondly, if Comcast (who own Sky Sports) end up buying Paramount (& Channel 5), they would be able to bid for Sports Rights that are legally required to remain FTA (or at least de facto), such as the World Cup, Euros, FA Cup, Premier League/Champions League Highlights and the Six Nations.

Is there any evidence to back that up though? Certainly it wasn't the case on the ratings front before the age of streaming, let alone in 2024.

Will they even be allowed to merge? I’m sure the competitions commission will have something to say about that. I mean, yes there’s Freeview, Sky (with Now as an offshoot), Virgin Media, Amazon Prime, Paramount+, and Disney+, but I’m not convinced they would be allowed to do it. But either way, I’m all for scrapping the licence fee, it’s a very out of date legacy idea. We’ve had subscription based TV ever since Sky and Virgin in their previous guises as NTL and/or Telewest started up. Plus the fact that tradition linear TV is an out of date idea too now with all these streaming only sites and catchup from the traditional linear companies, you can watch things almost literally whenever you like. And launching new series one episode per week can still be a thing, Netflix, Amazon, Paramount and Disney have all launched new episodes of certain popular series on a specific day and time each week, as they would have done on BBC, ITV, C4 or C5 etc.

The BBC should stay as it is. Maybe trim off some of its freeview/ DAB fat (bbc3, 4, parliament etc becoming iplayer only) but otherwise carry on as is.

A BBC/ITV/STV/Channel 4/ITN Merger could actually work under the following circumstances:
*The Combined Broadcaster adopts the BBC Name.
*Increase the Licence Fee to £730 a Year...and also apply it to those who have a Broadband Connection and/or Mobile Phone Contract. This would also mean that the BBC continues to not have adverts.
*Have BBC Four take ITV's Slot on the EPG, whike BBC Four takes Channel 4's slot on the EPG.
*Shut down all the ITV & Channel 4 channels that they own. And distrbute their content across the existing 6 Channels of the BBC.
    *Scrap all Reality Shows.
    *Absorb ITN into BBC News.
*Negotiate with Disney+, Amazon & Netflix over the Non-UK & Ireland Rights to all the content they own. On the condition that the winning streamer agrees to co-produce all the content (bar News & Current Affairs) that the BBC currently makes.

@@MrSmith1984 it's not workable because none of the broadcasters would want it. They all lose out except the BBC. ITV, C4 and C5 have spent a lot of money creating a trusted brand and as C5 is owned by Viacom they will not merge. An increased license fee is insanity, its already unpopular enough. It also would be thrown out in an instant by the competition regulator. It would cripple the UKs independent TV and film sector who rely on C4 to commission their work that other broadcasters won't show. The whole concept of a merger is batshit I'm afraid. And reality TV entertains tens of millions of people in the UK. It is incredibly cheap to make and gets a lot of eyeballs. Entertain being the key word as a part of the PSB mission to inform educate and entertain.
