Great car guy talk! Thanks for that 😊 Reputation is worth the expense! $80k CDN is my peak acceptance for a fail, big Panamera’s at that price lol. No to Ed, it’s a Noble! Lol
I hate to sound like an ass but you can get an E55 or a 911 for cheap considering what they are… I’m looking on Marketplace right now and found 3 somewhat local to me for less than $18k. That’s less than my parents paid for their Hyundai Sonata. Nobody said it’s cheap to maintain, it sure as shit will cost you more than $18k in that department over the long term. and I’m not advising you buy a cheap E55 or 911 off some guy named Paulie from North Bergen off Facebook. but you absolutely *can* cheaply dip your toes into E55 or 996 911 ownership
Ok at 26:00 - yes I’d love to just lowball people sight unseen and say “hey ill give you (insert obscenely low offer” but the real question is how does one find someone in such desperation or such a niche scenario that they are accepting insanely low offers on cars? I feel like that’s a huge element that is always left out of Ed’s explanation of his philosophy. The average person scrolling fb marketplace will never ever come across steal-deals on cheap exotics.
This happens more often than not, Matt himself now has a Lambo in boxes thanks to his Donnie experience. He is looking at $80k to have it put back together. Also most expensive cars are owned by people who earned it doing something else rather than fixing cars. I would also add that we have all experienced the guy who has a car that refuses an offer on a car that doesn't work "I know what I got" type of person. I normally offer the "cash waiting" to the wife or girlfriend instead of the guy as they have more leverage than you could.
I don't flip cars for a living but I seemingly always have a plethora of used sports cars in my driveway that I got off ebay/fb marketplace. There's a few situations where you can find these deals and not be buying a supercar. - It's a sketchy deal and you have to be willing to roll the dice. I once paid $10-15k under market for a 981 Cayman because the seller needed cash that week but wouldn't have the title for another 1-2 months. I got the car for cheap enough that if he dissaperared off the face of the earth, I could sell it as a no-title track car for what I paid. Ultimately, he sent me the title. I found this car on eBay, the buy it now price was super low and it had 100+ watchers, you just have to be willing to gamble. - You're buying a Miata/S2000/whatever off some 65-year-old rich guy who really doesn't give a shit about the difference between $12k and $20k. Be the first person to show up to their house with cash and enjoy. - It's a desirable, but late model and higher mile car that most banks won't write a check for. Especially if it's a rebuilt title or something. Bonus points if the seller doesn't have a bank account (you can guess why) and can only accept cash. If you're willing to sleep with $30k cash under your bed, you can get some amazing deals.
Most of the time it's a sudden, forced move. Changing jobs, moving away, divorce, deceased estate, etc. A lot of people are desperate for money with the interest rate rises too. On Marketplace, if it's been listed for weeks or longer, it's more likely they'll get sick of waiting and sell it cheap too
