I remember this game! Literally made me cry! Good news, I learned the tricks n scored 2-3 goals per round.
The square button may be for scoring but not necessarily! You can even use X for hitting it lower.
MAIN Q! How does one score? Simply first hit in direction u wish to shoot the ball then quickly press square or X. Target will move in chosen direction, wait split second before shooting it behind the net.

I remember the "diamond" formation where all players stayed in the middle of the pitch. I still lost despite constant opposition offsides

I loved this game. The target aiming inside the box was the most fun thing and this feature made it more challenging and interesting football game. I always preferred it over fifa98 at that time.

Loved this game. Remember putting every single corner into the front post for free goals and slide tackling the goalkeepers to get sent off. And playing Argentina to score Bati-goals
