    You can just use 2 cups of the Tea from the first batch of Kombucha you made...It'll make a whole nother Scoby! Anybody that don't have a scoby can buy a bottle of regular Kombucha Tea(with cultures) to make a Starter Scoby.

  • @nhutchins100
    @nhutchins100 2 роки тому +3

    Even though you put the mother scoby in the tea, you still need to add a cup of tea from one of your already fermented batches, otherwise it will take forever to complete. Also, only basic teas like black, green, jasmine, etc. can be used for kombucha. Not sure about chai, as I think there are other things mixed in that will keep your scoby from doing its job and can contaminate it. You may want to research that. Also, don't ever use a vinegar scoby to make a kombucha because you can get vinegar eels. Just use the vinegar scobys for vinegar and the kombucha scoby's for kombucha. -You got me started on all this kombucha. Thanks. Been doing a lot of research on it and got an excellent book on it called The Big Book of Kombucha.

    I love making kombucha! If you have a lot of people you are making kombucha for you might want to try a continuous brew. For me, the second brew (F2 ferment 2) is the most fun! When you bottle it you can add all sorts of fun things to flavor the kombucha. My favorite is adding fruit you get the best carbonation with fruit, watermelon is Soo good, but you have to be careful watermelon gets a very strong carbonation. Have fun!

    Great stuff Lead! FYI dont buy a SCOBI on line, go to the store and buy a bottle of organic Kombucha with the mother in it and put half the bottle into a new starter jar. The mother will grow and form and will continue to grow babies.

    I have bowel issues. I ask my Dr. What her thoughts are about vinegar. She tells me that's for cleaning your house we have no research to prove that it's not harmful to your body. I knew better. But I was so sick and bleeding I took her advice and went on the antibiotics. After they were finished and didn't help I started taking my vinegar. I'm now feeling better. I need need to learn more. My doctor said waste can build up on the walls of the intestines, just like arteries get plaque build up. If that build up gets bad it distends your intestines, causes bloating and it can be quite painful. It sounds like I need to look into kabucha.

    On another note. I am an Internal Med physician. To answer the question: "Why doesn't your doctor does not tell you this"? Are you going to a medical doctor or a natural path/homeopath? Different schools! This type of nutrition based health care was not taught in my medical school (class of 1993). I don't know the current curriculum., especially regarding nutrition. If your physician is not in private practice, they are an employee physician and have to stay in the lines of "evidence based medicine"! If your physician is in private practice he/she can have more cushion in their practice style. So I encourage each you ASK YOUR DOCTOR! Society expects us to see you, in primary care, in 15 minutes!! Based on what? What is magic about being seen in 15 minutes! You take more time at Jiffy Lube for your car; the beautician and nail salon!! But is a rant for another day!!! Just ask your doctor!!??? If they don't know then see a natural path!

    I have been making this for years. I end up having to throw some of the Scobie's out because after a while no one will take them. I have thought of dehydrating one to see what happens and if it will grow again after storing for a while. I have heard that you should start a batch with black tea and then you can use other types and fruit after the fact. Black is best for starting. I don't think the flavored teas would work as they have spices which might inhibit the fermentation. After the fact mixing spice and herbs might be nice with fruit juice, coconut water. I wait another week after adding a bit of fruit to the first fermentation. Ginger is something I have contemplating for a while. Thanks for your take on it.

    BTW...back when I was making it I started my own scoby buy buying a bottle of kobucha (plain). I brewed green tea, added sugar and poured a bottle of kombucha in it and covered it with a coffee filter. I think it took a couple of weeks but finally the mother formed.

    Store bought Kombucha is more expensive because legal alcohol limit must be less than .05mil per bottle
    So, the equipment to remove the higher alcohol content, the cost of that, drives the price up.
    About 7yrs back a bottle was like 1.50. Now with the alcohol regulation the price has doubled almosy tripled.
