I feel that my life is really shit atm. And watching this interview, witch I've done over and over for the past month or two, gives me strength. Phil is an inspiration for keep on going with life and fight it. Phil is a true idol of mine and thinking of him gives me courage and strength to not give up on anything that I believe in.
phil, if you only knew just how much you speaking so candidly, and honest about your past, and your addiction has benefited myself and so many others like me. you give us hope man. truly, thanks for doing this. love is the law.
can't stop listening to this man, so much respect, he has that something that makes you just want to know what he has to say, i just enjoy his every interview
The way he talks... is so mesmerizing. The silences were he takes the time to think are broken by quote after quote of pain.... Dude! This man knows how to grip an audience and he does so with such eloquence!
It's pretty obvious that Phil is a down to earth, no bullshit kind of guy. What you see is what you get with him. He has maintained his musical integrity and credibility through all these years because he's an independent thinker who doesn't flock with the sheep, or make music for the mainstream. Despite his mistakes and mishaps, I think he damn sure deserves some respect for contributing some incredible music to the world.
Phil is a fascinating character. I love most of his music, but I wouldn't say I "like" him as a person...but I respect him. He's been through some serious shit, a lot of it self-inflicted, and for him to have come out the other side as a better person is pretty amazing. I could listen to him talk all day.
He's been through so much. He had a terrible childhood, left home at 13 and started singing anywhere he could. He's gone from being a lost teenager playing bars to one of the greatest metal singers of all time, spending 10 years with Pantera and playing arenas and stadiums around the world. Sure he's not the same Phil from the 1990's but he's been through a hurricane with heroin, died then survived, and lives to tell his story. Through hell and back, I have alot of respect for this man.
Dude, Phil is awesome and always will be...I was just saying that all those years of hard living are really taking their toll on his mind and body, and it's evident now.
Fuck yeah, Phil. It took some balls to say the things he's said. To be so candid and frank about something that has caused him such pain. It's brave, it's what it is...even if you aren't a fan of his work or have some issues against him, you gotta admit its damn brave to say this in a room crowded full of people. Much respect Phil. Keep it metal, man \m/
everybody NEEDS ta see this, the greatest insight into the users mind. phils experience is scary and i will 'learn from this mistake'. its great ta see him lookin so sharp and healthy again. the 2 best live gigs ive ever seen were from DOWN!
Thanx for posting this. finally get to hear Phil's side of the story.. especially when he was dealing with the ADDICTION shit. might help some kids out there.
Actually, this video makes me so proud. That dude on stage had serious shit with drugs and it seemed as if he would never get out of it alive. And now he's clean, sober and still rocking and full of regret. This man should be an example to us all.
You know what? Listening to this, to what Phil has to say only confirms what I felt meeting the guy. He is a man who says what he truly feels and says it 100%, whether it's right, wrong, controversial, or whatever. You have to admire anyone who sticks to his convictions, who can admit when he's wrong and mean it. Let's face it, in this business, everyone's out for something but I have to say, that I didn't feel that when I met him.
Anyone can say Phils brain is fried, but you gotta understand he has lived life to the fullest and seen the whole spectrum of joy and pain with physical problems and with substance problems. He is at a point in life where wisdom is what is left and a generosity for helping those around him.He has given his whole energy to make his fans happy at the sacrafice of his well being. You guys that talk and live life with controlled and sterile enviorments will never understand him.
This ain't a laughing matter and it taskes a certain kind of man to come out and talk about his problems and mistakes. Must respect to Phil for coming out and talking about it, glad you cleaned up too.
What Phil says about painkillers is 100% true. A friend of mine was hurt in a construction accident. He was prescribed Viccodine, which he soon became addicted to. When he couldn't get that anymore, he'd buy what he needed on the street. 18 months later, he graduated to heroin and became addicted to that. All this due to a few broken fingers and ribs. It's a downword spiral. That's all it is, and nothing good ever comes from it. I am happy to say he's now free from addiction,
I love you to death Philip, for the man you are, for the power you have, for the influence and huge willpower you have always given me, for the example you set for all of us for the message you give through your music!!
arknihil, you couldn't be more wrong. If anyone is qualified to speak on drugs, it is Phil. He is riveting, passionate and real. And, he has lived the life and survived.
When he said "I am an extremist when it comes to everything. Anything I set my mind to I am an absolute extremist", that shit is why I identify with this man so much.
in my opinion, phil is the true definition of a MAN. Im only a teenager, but him and his lyrics such as those on vulgar display of power, are very influential on me and make me wana be like him(minus the drugs)
Fuckin' love this guy!! A true legend. I was lucky enough to see Pantera at Ozzfest in '98 in the UK. They were without doubt the BEST band of the day! Fuck it, the best band I've ever seen in my life!!
thank s for posting this shit man. Finally Phil can speak out and tell his struggles with things.and maybe help some of these kids who have yet to face ADDICTION>
He's a very enigmatic dude. Very electric.....Just born with stage presence wether with PanterA in thier prime or something like this....Ive seen him in concert and man....he is quite a dude.
I just realized something. Music has NOTHING to do with personal preference or musical taste. Man, in fact, that whole word is a lie, it doesn't exist. I hated metal 3 years ago, and if I would have related that to my ''musical taste'', I wouldn't be a DIEHARD PANTERA FAN right now. No... it was pure interest. Curiousity. Its about habituation and motivation. And thats exactly what Phil means. Love and Will. They are the same thing. Habuituation = Love. Motivation = Will. Thanks Phil.
This was before they were famous. Kirk was cool and still is very down to earth. I talked to Jimmy Bower not long ago. I do extra work for films part time and was working on an episode of Treme that featured his other band Eyehategod.
you can't expect someone who's been in the metal world for longer than you have probably been alive to come out with a perfect and non-flawed mind. He's still alive and that fact alone is enough to show some goddamn respect. I'm sure on a good day he could outwit you anyway if that's all you're worried about
Phil does not look like a ghost!! I don't even think he looks 41...man is still hot in my book...I love him, he's real, candid and just says what's on his mind and in his heart...He RAWKS!!!!!!
I met Phil and the other three guys at a Waxie Maxie's in '94 for a CD release and signing of Far Beyond Driven. Saying wadup to the guys and shaking hands, they were super cool and almost like big brothers, especially Phil. Granted I was only 13. But now he seems like such a retreated guy, almost small and afraid. I feel for the man but I think his 'extremist' side was a poison, even without the drug abuse. RIP Dime and Pantera
I agree dude-I say more power to anybody who can tame their inner demons. It's not about what that person has done in the past, but what he is doing NOW
There is NOBODY like Phil. Funny how people like to judge his "context". I could listen to that voice all day. Phil is getting the haters to watch him! lol Now that's domination at its best.
@KellyAnn2390 Me too. It can be a hinderance when the passion to do better consumes you with such a drive to reach perfection that you literally can't stop working on your music and do anything else, like even get to a job on time, but it can also make you great. I'll bet most of the elite level musicians have some form of this mindset.
Phil is off the junk now, but obviously it took a heavy toll on him. His speech and demeanor has slowed down a bit, but he's still a legend and can still rock out.

Good interview, very genuine and heartfelt. I'm glad this is on video so Phil won't be misquoted.
I think this is one of the greatest things on UA-cam, I learned a lot from this, thank you Phil.
Thx for uploading to share us the Phil's interview videos 1 thru 7!
Phil Anselmo is a cool guy on earth :D
Man, despite of his huge heroin addiction, he is the most clear and honest person i've ever heard
the way he speaks-immediately grasps attention and keeps it until the very end!
I always watch this interview when I feel like crap, I don't know why, But Phil just gives me some strength and encouragement to live life.
Thank you for this video. There is not enough up to date videos of Phil just speaking about his past.......
It's pretty obvious that Phil is a down to earth, no bullshit kind of guy. What you see is what you get with him. He has maintained his musical integrity and credibility through all these years because he's an independent thinker who doesn't flock with the sheep, or make music for the mainstream. I could listen to him talk all day.
how can be a human being so extreme and so deep in heart? i love you Phil, CFH for fucking ever
Phil is so articulate and down to earth. He is awesome.
He's been through so much. He had a terrible childhood, left home at 13 and started singing anywhere he could. He's gone from being a lost teenager playing bars to one of the greatest metal singers of all time, spending 10 years with Pantera and playing arenas and stadiums around the world. Through hell and back, I have alot of respect for this man.
ive never seen this kind of Phil before, this is fucking awsome. good for you Phil. the spirit and power of music kept you alive my friend
I always new Phil was an extremely well-spoken and intelligent person, but not as much as I do after watching this. Thanks for uploading!
One of the most well spoken men I have ever heard
Dude, Phil is awesome and always will be...I was just saying that all those years of hard living are really taking their toll on his mind and body, and it's evident now.
Truly a wise man with lots of life experience. Love and respect Phil Anselmo.
Idk how does phil to stay so young and strong, he was a real mess in the past, but look at him, his so full of energy and life!
I like listening to his voice whether he is singing or just talking, that is one deep badass voice!
I wish he would speak more often. Hearing him speak and his story is moving
everybody NEEDS ta see this, the greatest insight into the users mind. phils experience is scary and i will 'learn from this mistake'. its great ta see him lookin so sharp and healthy again. the 2 best live gigs ive ever seen were from DOWN!
always interesting to listen to Phil. thanks for posting this!
Thanx for posting this. finally get to hear Phil's side of the story.. especially when he was dealing with the ADDICTION shit. might help some kids out there.

Deepest voice of any human I know.

He's the best man. Glad he survived heroin addiction. So many excellent musicians didn't.
I have degenerative disc disease and I can sympathize with him. It's a daily struggle. I'm glad to see him straight.
arknihil, you couldn't be more wrong. If anyone is qualified to speak on drugs, it is Phil. He is riveting, passionate and real. And, he has lived the life and survived.
Thanks for uploading.
"First REAL Heavy Metal band..." Love it.
I could listen to his voice all day, more relaxing than morgan freeman
When he said "I am an extremist when it comes to everything. Anything I set my mind to I am an absolute extremist", that shit is why I identify with this man so much.
I'm so fucking glad that he's back on his feet. He's the man.
in my opinion, phil is the true definition of a MAN. Im only a teenager, but him and his lyrics such as those on vulgar display of power, are very influential on me and make me wana be like him(minus the drugs)
All things considered he looks in pretty good shape for being around 40
This guy is a living legend!
Fuckin' love this guy!! A true legend. I was lucky enough to see Pantera at Ozzfest in '98 in the UK. They were without doubt the BEST band of the day! Fuck it, the best band I've ever seen in my life!!

I just realized something.

Anyone know if this can be found on a podcast or anything? I'd love to hear it but have such a short attention span for videos on computer.
Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law. Love is the law, love under will.

Such a nice guy, respect.

PHIL ANSELMO "RULES"
I love this guy
this guy is bigger than himself. Such a huge presence
When you argue on the internet, nobody wins.
Phil is off the junk now, but obviously it took a heavy toll on him. His speech and demeanor has slowed down a bit, but he's still a legend and can still rock out.
can anyone fill me in on the background for this? was it a lecture on the dangers of drug use or something?
Amen Phil...
