    We've noticed a lot of things while traveling across Japan. This video covers safety and crowds/how busy places are. We have a lot of other things to cover but there's so much to say about each individual topic that we thought it was better to provide more information rather than be brief and get everything done in one video but leave out a lot of details! We have a lot of tips and advice (especially in the next video), so hopefully these are helpful!

      It's the same in switzerland. Even if you are a bit of a talent in driving and you need very few lessons it will cost you about 1000$. Most people though will pay about 2500-4000$ until they get their license.

    I just came back from Japan and I was happy that pets were so expensive. Usually when pets are harder to attain that means the individual has the means to take care of it or they really want it to be part of their family.
    In my super humble opinion if you are thinking of going to Japan, you need to go! It is the best country ever.
    What I really want to know is the following:
    1. Why is there almost zero litter in Japan? Everywhere I went was near spotless.
    2. Why does no one J-walk?

      That's just the characteristic Japanese attitude: thinking of the group before the individual. If you litter, that just means someone else has to pick it up, and that's a dick move. It's why the crime rate is nonexistant and there are vending machines everywhere. If you had that many vending machines in Britain, in the kind so places Japanese people put them, they'd all be piles of scrapmetal and broken glass in less than an hour.

      The problem with the expensive pets though, is that they're still pet shop pets. Which means they come from breeders with little to no oversight of their ethical practices. And it's not like Japan doesn't have enough pets already, Japanese streets are overrun with stray cats. But no one thinks to adopt them, they just go get a shiny new one from the store instead.
      For what it's worth though, the people who *do* run adoptions in Japan are generally very particular. It's actually to the point of being really annoying, but you can tell they care about the animals they're giving out. I just wish more people here were open to adoption to begin with. :/

      i once had a study trip to japan and was assigned to a very kind, humble foster family,consist of the mom, the dad and 2 boys;1 is 9 yo and another one 5 yo. i could answer your first question based on my experience.
      when i was heading home from the supermarket with my fosterfamily, the 9yo kid offered me some candies and yeah sure i took it. it was a candy wrapped in a plastic covering. as i ate the candy, the kid asked me for the candy covering and he crumbled it and put it into his pocket.
      for me i was floored because there is little to none kids in my country who would do that. the kids in japan were taught from early ages to not litter as it causes discomfort to others.

    In Germany it generally costs around 2000€ to get your drivers licence too including all the lessons. It could be a bit less or even more depending on how good you are/how many classes you have to take though.
    Trains can be pretty expensive in Germany too, 60€ for around 4 hours sounds legit. But I still think that's way too expensive even though I'm used to it

    In France, it's at least €1,500 to get a license - that is if you pass on your first attempt. There's a minimum amount of practical driving lessons that you need to take before you can do the exam. Likewise, for the theory test you have to go to a driving school to do practice sessions.

    I find Japan is very cheap, but it's probably because I lived in New York. To go to the top of Empire State you'll need to pay like 80 or 90 USD which I think Skytree is much cheaper... So I guess the price of traveling in Japan really depends on where you come from

  • @skykid709
    @skykid709 7 років тому +8

    If travelling Japan in the summer, a MAJOR pro is having vending machines everywhere you go. ;) Having bottles of Pocari Sweat at hand no matter where I was (there was even a machine at the top of an abandoned mining mountain at Iwami Ginzan!) saved my butt from dehydration. Being able to buy folding fans and such for cheap was also helpful - as was learning that some shrines with sacred water fountains will let you fill your water bottles from them. :)
    I'd say another tip for travelling is Japan's hostels. In Canada (and some places in the US) hostels can get really skeevy, with limited amenities and unattractive rooms. (Things I have experienced in North American hostels: sagging beds, furniture with their feet set in open tins of roach repellent, 8x10 rooms holding 4 bunk beds and a set of lockers, a locking steel cage door separating the sleeping rooms from the rest of the hostel, old computers with mice covered in questionable substances......) By comparison Japanese hostels are beautiful, super cheap, extremely clean, and the staff in the ones I've been to usually speak a decent amount of English and have maps and recommendations of local places to eat and sightsee. Both Hana Hostel and Khaosan have been great chains to stay at (though Hana is my favourite). Singly-run hostels can also be great (see: Hakone Tent), but it's worth asking whether they have laundry machines, lockers, night-time lockups, privacy curtains, and most importantly, air conditioning! (Kamakura Guest House had some of the friendliest, coolest staff, plus a handmade かき氷 maker, but it was _sweltering_.)
    Hostels will also usually have cultural events and deals; the Hana Hostel in downtown Osaka had a sake tasting night and a few tour groups, among other things.

      Oh! And I forgot about the special antimicrobial camis/undershirts you can buy at Uniqlo that wick sweat and help protect your outer clothes. I had no idea how all the Japanese people around me weren't showing any sweat stains in 40+ heat, and it turned out that was why. I bought a bunch and took them home with me for when our Canadian summers get hot (and now they've worn out so I need some more...).

    It cost me around 3000 euro's to get my drivers license here in the Netherlands. You need to pass a theoretical examination and a practical examination. Plus you will pay easily €50,- per lesson and most people need around 20 practical lessons to succeed. Of course the theoretical exam and practical examination cost money as well (€35,- for theoretical and around €100,- for practical at the time I got it). So yeah even in Europe (or at least the Netherlands) a drivers license is also very very expensive.

    • @sashimicity
      @sashimicity 7 років тому +1

      Wow that's crazy expensive. In Australia (at least the state where I live) it's free, as long as you take the theory exam in high school. Even the practical driving assessment is paid by the government, and is completely free on your first try. If you happen to fail on your first try though, it's $75 every time you have to re-sit the practical driving assessment. And there are absolutely no toll gates in the state where I live, so all you have to pay is for fuel, LOL.

    • @itrickyalove
      @itrickyalove 7 років тому

      What state do you live in? I live in Victoria and there's about a 100$ fee to take your test and you have to pay that every time if you fail, you also usually have a fee for your instructor, about another 100$. There are plenty of tolls to get into melbourne and the outer inner suburbs, but there are also freeways where there are no tolls.

    • @sashimicity
      @sashimicity 7 років тому

      itrickyalove I live in Perth. For me, my driving instructor costs $60/hour each lesson, I took about 12 lessons before I took the practical assessment. . I also visited Melbourne recently, and my cousins told me that you guys have have 100 hours of supervised driving before you can sit the test. In WA it's only 25 hours xD You guys have it so tough, lol.

    • @itrickyalove
      @itrickyalove 7 років тому

      Elisha Sinclair Haha, it's actually 120 hours, with at least 10 of them being night time driving. It's goddamn tedious I tell you. Lessons cost about the same in Vic, I only had about 5, I already had my hours up but I was going for a manual license and had no access to a manual car without lessons. They've upped the requirements in the last 8 years for our licences. They would have changed them to the current requirements in about 2010 or so, they used to be a lot less strict and required much less hours.

      I paid around 1.800 € in Germany (average is probably 20 driving lessons as well) and I didn't attend that many lessons, roughly two lessons less than the average so it's kinda expensive but I never would have guessed that it's even more expensive in the Netherlands! I mean, of course there are some differences but it's 50% more expensive :o

    prices in Japan are pretty similar to here in The Netherlands. Public transportation is really expensive and not trustworthy at all. (distances aren't that big though so paying 30 euro's to cross the country is normal.) luckily you get free access as a student here. Driving lessons are around 2000 here as well, depending on how much lessons you need, because you need to pass the exam too. Japan is small? Well if you are used to America, okay. My country is like so much smaller than Japan. I am amazed that it takes soo long to go from one prefecture to another. It'll cost you half an hour at most here.
    It is funny to see how people from different countries experience things!

      Speaking of small, Denmark is tiny! Having traveled in America rather extensively myself, I can't imagine Japan will be too daunting in terms of travel distances.
      Even though we're both small countries, the Netherlands is much more fun to travel in than Denmark :)

Ive never been farther than neighbouring countries, so I dont have experiences with others.. but next to people being rude and/or creepy I mostly hate how this system handles problems. and the amount of delay! oh god. The fun part is meeting new people in the train and talking about life experiences. Ive met some pretty inspirational people while travelling :)
      but why do you like our public transport and how is it different from yours? :)

    • @MrTheWaterbear
      @MrTheWaterbear 7 років тому

      Well, to be honest, I've only been to the Netherlands a few times, and mostly for competitive swimming meets and the ISSTs (International School Sports Tournaments) last year. The Hague had really nice bike rentals, and the trains and busses we took were pleasant and efficient. The cyclists in Amsterdam are even more nuts than in Copenhagen, but it was nice to see how many people were out and about :)
      Can't comment much on the culture and of living in the Netherlands, because, well, I haven't stayed there much.
      At the time I visited I lived in Bruxelles, Belgium. Their trams suck so much it's ridiculous. Their metro is ok, but very busy. Their trams break down frequently, block paths for cars, pedestrians and cyclists. And if one breaks down, they all have to stop. In the middle of the road. Why would you ever have trams?!
      Compared to that, your system in the Netherlands is much more like ours here in Denmark. Busses and trains, with some good metro as well. I still think the Danish is the best, but the Dutch is not far from it ^^ Either way, the Dutch and Danish public transport is heaps better than what little they have in the US!

    Hey Rachel & Jun. Thank you for another great video! Im looking forward for my 2nd Japan Trip in the Spring :)
    In Switzerland we have to pay 2000 until 4000 Swissfrancs (~2200 - 4500 USD) to get the whole driver licence... Its super expensive like Japan. We also have to do some courses after we have done the driver licence, which costs another CHF 800 (850 USD).
    Keep going with your clips. Im realy enjoying them!
    Greets from Switzerland. Tobi

    I'm from Denmark, with some of the best public transport in the world - albeit a bit pricey. Having traveled Coast-to-Coast and back 9 times during summer (each road trip being ~4-7 weeks) in the US, car travel and tolls in the US are fantastically affordable, and there's just so much to see! Public is better than car in Denmark, which I suppose is probably the same case in Japan. :)
    [Edit] Currently taking my driver's license in Denmark, for which I've paid around $2500 XD So yeah, I'll be right at home traveling Japan cost-wise!

    People actually get ripped off in France/Paris because there are people standing at the ATM's who tell them that the metro is like 130 euro's for a day or something, while it is actually just about 1.50 :') and they are such nice people so they'll do the process for you, so you just need to give them cash. They catch about 50 people doing this a day!! NEVER trust people, always trust the ATM's

    In Denmark you usually pay around 2000 dollars for driver's training as well, so it's pretty expensive! Honestly I feel like it could be lower too, it's almost absurd because although you're paying for essentially an education, you don't use that much time on it. About a month or two, depending on how long you take to pass the tests.

    Great video guys - thank you! ^-^ I have a (possibly somewhat stupid) question. How do you tell if somewhere *is* a restaurant or izakaya, and if so whether it's open and what sort of food they serve, if you don't read Japanese?
    When I was visiting Japan, especially in the small streets in Kyoto, there were lots of places with a red lantern outside (akachochin?) but with the doors either closed or covered by a curtain. I couldn't tell if they actually were restaurants or bars, if they were open or closed, or whether they were likely to serve the sort of food we could eat (one time I was with a vegetarian, another time with someone who has a fish allergy). They often had small hand-written signs, but being British and ignorant we couldn't read them - and some had no signs at all. As a result, we ended up mostly going to fairly boring places like a Sukiya or the ubiquitous Irish pubs, because we could figure those out! Any tips would for my next visit would be gratefully received. Domo arigato!

    I'd add one thing which is budget airlines. Domestic flights within Japan could be much cheaper compared to Shinkansen. It's a trade off since you can't get off right from the city center and the flexibility of frequent schedule but if you want to cover long trip flying could save you some money too.

      jun looked absolutely annoyed with her in this video. hes tired of her being so egotistical, pretending like she knows everything, careing more about her looks than her personality. look how he rolls his eyes when she tries to bicker with him about drivers license prices, basically trying to tell him she knows that japans dl prices are the worst. then look at this comment section, everyone debunking her shit and proving jun right. and he juet sat there and let her ramble on cuz he didnt want to offend her. invest more time and energy into becoming a better person instead of thinking a new nose and botox or some shit will hide your ugliness. it comes from inside.

    anyone want to help an american understand these driving lessons you all had to pay so much for? in america you dont need to take driving lessons at all and I think its only like 25$ for your license......I passed first try, with very little practice, in a car I had never driven before.
    is the practise mandatory? I would think with the costs im seeing, driving instructor would be a highly sought after job in your countries

    • @vangrails
      @vangrails 7 років тому +3

      I am not so sure what there is too understand? These driving lessons are of course needed to pass an exam. Some need more driving lessons than others, you pay per lesson. Yes, driving instructors need to be paid of course. You probably also want to be paid for your labor, don't you? Same with driving instructors, they want to be paid for their labor. It is not a badly paid job but also not a well paid job.

    • @farfromirrational948
      @farfromirrational948 7 років тому

      I feel a strange sense of you being perturbed. My point is that here in the states you can get a provisional license before taking any driving exam (written test only which can be studyed on your own) with that provisional license you are allowed to drive as long as there is a person over the age of 25(with a license) in the passenger seat with you. Meaning you can practise with friends and family. In america I have rarely heard of anyone paying for driving lessons, more often than anything your parents or siblings will take you out and help you practise in a parking lot, and then around the neighborhood and finally on a freeway. Once your confident, take your test and pay 25$ for your license.
      2000$ is alot of money. My first car cost less than that, and like I said, I passed my exam first try, as did most of my friends. Im asking why anyone would pay that kind of money. If you tell me driving classes are mandatory than you've answered my question. If you act like im being pompous and ignore my question in favor of trying to undermine my intelligence then you just make yourself look like an ass.

    • @vangrails
      @vangrails 7 років тому +1

      I am not trying to undermine anything at all but I find it strange that you think that giving driven instructions pays huge amounts of money. Based on what? No, it is a decently paid job but nothing special when it comes to salary. It is like you find it unfair that these people get paid at all.
      Strictly speaking those lessons are not mandatory but you are not allowed to drive if you don't have passed the exam so the only way to learn how to drive is getting lessons. These exams are not easy so most people need a lot of lessons. The instructor has a special car with an extra brake pedal and a big sign on the roof of the car that indicates that it is a car for lessons. Practicing with friends or family is not allowed, also because they don't have such a car, if you cause an accident when you do that then you are in very big trouble. And I would feel very guilty if I kill a person because I didn't want to pay for driving lessons.

    • @farfromirrational948
      @farfromirrational948 7 років тому +1

      vangrails first of all you're making a lot of assumptions there. "Its like you find it unfair that these people get paid at all". I insinuated no such thing.
      I assumed that they would be paid well since any and all drivers need lessons according to you, and the lessons are rather expensive. At no point did I state an opinion as to how much I believe they should be paid. Just that I would think it would be a sought after job due to my assumption of a high pay rate.
      This is why I said you sound perturbed. You're making up drama where none existed. Of course they should be paid, and I would even go so far as to say I DO believe they SHOULD be paid very well. As you stated, lives are being risked, and to top it off im sure it takes an extreme amount of patients to deal with new drivers all day every day. Not to mention risk of injury and back pain from people jerking the car (having a lead foot)
      Now that thats out of the way I can thank you for your response. This time you actually shed some light on the scenario and it makes much more sense to me now. I appreciate you.
      Have you ever heard of a driving instructor purposefully giving mediocre lessons to try to squeeze money out of clients? Or is there enough competition for your business that a driving instructor wouldnt make it very far doing such a thing?

    • @vangrails
      @vangrails 7 років тому

      "for your business" FYI: I am not a driving instructor and I am not involved in the driving instruction business at all. There are review web sites that make it possible to compare the quality of driving instructors.

    rachel it is really important that you do some research on prices in places other than Cincinnati. all of your comments on america being a cheap country are ignoring the busy cities, while your comments about how expensive japan is, are mostly taken from busy cities and tourist spots.
    I garuantee you that new york in general is as expensive or more than most of tokyo
    I live in san diego, much of san diego is within a mile or 2 of beach's and this causes it to be very expensive.

    I used to live in Toyohashi and I took the Seishun 18 kippu ( a special ticket meant for college students) to get to Tokyo during winter break because it was cheaper. It took forever because it was basically a local train and made many many stops. I want to say about 5-6 hours? I can't remember. I swore that I would take the shinkansen next time. And I did. But, there was one stop when we passed through the mountains and then there was a break to reveal the ocean (?) during sunset. Everyone in the trained gasped. It was so beautiful. I also saw mount fuji and so many towns and villages. I probably would never do it again, but those views made that train ride memorable. I also took a night train from Niigata to Maibara. It was cheap and a great experience too. And I definitely recommend hyperdia for train timetables. It saved my life in Japan. I traveled to so many places because of that site.

The cheapest where I live is 800 dollars, but the highest is 2200 dollars. Those included different amount of classes, but only differed with like 5 classes.

    Thank you for all these advices. I'm going to use some of it during my stay in here. I am in Japan for only half a year now, but I already recognise many things you have mentioned.
    Although about the prices I have an opinion that is not enough to compare the price itself, but salary should be also considered. Back at home I would never buy half of the things I am getting here

    Have either of you ever been to Kagoshima? My best friend teaches there and she talks about how hot it is there and about the Volcano. She also talks about the pork there. it sounds fun.

    Love your vids, guys! I actually found food prices in Japan to be remarkably cheaper than I expected. I live near Seattle, and have done a number of trips around the US, and found that Japanese dining had options that were tastier, healthier, and cheaper than what I could find traveling in the US. At least one meal per day in Japan would be at 7-11, then any number of different types of restaurants throughout the day.

    I am in Houston, Texas. The toll roads here are merely used as an express loop to get around the city costing about $1.75 every few miles. I can't think of any toll roads that take you from city to city. Although I must say there is an privately owned company here that is looking to put in a Japanese\European-style bullet train system connecting all the major cities here in Texas.

    You have to pay to go up to the top of the Space Needle (Seattle) now, too. When I was a kid it was free.

    If you haven't been there yet, I highly recommend Miyajima. It's in the Hiroshima Prefecture. It's gorgeous all year round. It can get crowded during the major vacation weeks, but it is worth a visit. Your camera will thank you.

    Lived in Toyohashi for a couple hundred just south of Nagoya. It was very cheap actually. Food also was, I felt similar to sometimes cheaper than American food, except out of season fruit. There are a lot of mom and pops type obento box places which are good alternatives to Konbini for pretty cheap lunch. Great suggestions though in this one!

    In the Uk for your driving license, we have to pay for the lessons, theory test and practical test... which can add up to 1000-2000 GBP depending on how many lessons you take.

    As a Swiss (so used to pay a lot for everything), transport seemed expensive in Japan at first, by time comparison but these shinkansen are soooo fast if you think about the price per kilomter. It's quite good.

    A driver's licence in Portugal is around 400 to 500 euros, classes included. By the way, your movies are great and super educacional on Japan and normal livingnthere and your cat is super! All the best.

    This is a pretty late comment on the video, but I live in Thailand and it costed me less than $10 for my driver's licence test. Most private driving schools would not cost more than $150, but maybe the very reputable ones would set you back about $250. $2000 for the licence seems unimaginable to me!

    As for the driver license prices, it's between 200-700 euros to get yours in Portugal 🇵🇹
    It dependents where you get it, if it's in a busy city like Lisbon, it's about 230 euros but it can get as high as 700 in less populated areas because there's less competition.

    In Norway you can end up paying upwards of $2400 to get your license. A lot of people travel to other cities or even other counties to save money, although it usually comes to about $1600-$2000 anyway.
