  • WOW! What an adventure it was.
Driving almost 4 hrs. to Canada's capital city Ottawa, equipped with just an egg incubator and the clothes on my back, I was only expecting to do a quick turn-around. Retrieve the eggs from a pair of killdeer that were nesting where a stage was to be built for the Bluesfest outdoor music festival and immediately bring them back to the sanctuary that same night. I had already put in a good days work at WWS, and as I neared my destination, I was feeling tired, and a little worried about having to drive back to the sanctuary again.
To my surprise and delight, just before I arrived, special permission was granted to allow the organizers to move the nest and eggs to a new and safer location. I was the person for that task, as I hold a scientific permit from the federal government, granting me the privilege to move or incubate eggs of migratory and federally protected birds.
I received a warm welcome from everyone there, along with many introductions, and then a full evening of shuffling a make-shift nest 1 metre at a time, followed by an all-expenses paid stay in downtown Ottawa.
Unfortunately, I had to endure a 4 am wake-up call the next morning because, at the crack of dawn, we needed to start the shuffle again.
But we did it! And we did it all for the birds!
Huge thank you's go out to the Mark Monahan and Jim Mountain for their compassion and patience, and for doing the right thing for these beautiful killdeer parents. Thank you's to the NCC, and their staff biologists, Camille and Alex for researching and building the nest platform and obtaining the needed permissions. And huge kudos to our Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Katherine McKenna, for fast-tracking us through all the red tape.
Special TY's to all the media representatives, newspaper, TV and radio, for sharing this compassionate story and giving people renewed hope for humanity.
It amazes me how many people were involved in this process. What is clear to me is that most of us truly care, and are willing to go that extra metre, no matter what the cost, and "Save our Wildlife ~ One Animal at a Time".
