- The first in the world practice wide-body military-transport with payload to 60 t. The biggest from the existing MT-s on that time it established more than 40 records of cargo capacity. With take-off mass 225 t and diameter of the fuselage 6 meters it had the biggest in the world screws with a diameter of 6.2 m. The sizes of cargo cabin (4.4 m width, 4.4 m height, 33 m length) considerably surpass a railway coach and allow to transport practically all existing building and boring technique. The airplane has the AN-22A modification with more perfect equipment. It is simple in control and operation. It mastered airfields of 89 countries on five continents.

I understand that this plane has suffered significant damage and is no longer airworthy, from the destruction at Hostumel (Gostumel) airport, when the An-225 was destroyed during the invasion of Ukraine.
Yeah, it suffered and is repaired now! From what I was able to see in a video-but I don't know whether she's airworthy again or whether she'll be displayed in a museum soon.

yep.. it is the same with Tupolev Ty-95
The engines are ~the same as the TU95, but the propeller are bigger on the AN22: 6.20m diameter (5.80m for the Tu95) both only 750RPM at maximum trust

Can anyone explain why this aircraft has 2 propellers per shaft ? Is it to increase thrust ?
using two counter-rotating propellers on a single engine enables you to use smaller prop diameters.
one advantage is ground clearance. also the aircraft with these engines where/are (almost) as fast as jet aircraft. at that speed the tips of the propellers with normally required diameters would have been resulting in super sonic speed which is absolutely not desireable. Hence the top speed would have been limited because of the propeller. With a smaller propeller diameter this risk is limited.
I think the biggest disadvantages today are the cost to maintain the gear boxes and the noice this setup emits.
